Dr John Tony used to live (and as far as I know still does) in one of those tiny little English villages in Somerset called Odcome. Its between Yeovil and Crewcerne. I havent talked to him in years, but this might get you started. Try English brand of records "Trailer" Cheers & Good Luck

Doctor John

I was led aa month or two ago to the following site, www.rockinworld.com. (Maybe one day I'll learn how to imbed a URL so you can just click on the blue letters. I do have the little HTML instruction site bookmarked.)

They sell used CD's and LP's by mail. Despite their URL, they list many folk titles (folk is listed as a separate category).

I checked just now, and they list one Tony Rose LP, "Under the Greenwood Tree." They have two copies for sale. I do not know how often they update their list.

I used them once to purchase an obscure album. They ask collector's prices. It is not a bargain bin. I was pleased with their service.

Enjoy the music!!

I've not seen a web page anywhere for Tony Rose so he may not be on the "net". However if you were to contact his erstwhile Bandoggs colleague Pete Coe whose web page is http://www.backshift.demon.co.uk/petehome.htm I'm sure he would tell you what Tony is doing these days.

Tony's version of "William Gower" (usually called "The Waterford Sea Captain" in Ireland) blew my mind when I first heard it.

Mind you, there was a funny consequence. It was the first song I sang at the Goleen Singers Club, in Dublin, many years ago. There was the usual excellent attention as I sang and when I finished, there was a slight hush before a round of applause. "Great", I thought, "they really seemed to enjoy that." It wasn't until months after that I realised all it meant was that they knew versions with at least one more part to the story - and were waiting for me to sing it!

Subject: Celtic Music UK: Was RE: Tony Rose
From: GeorgeH
Date: 07 Feb 00 - 05:44 AM

I'm surprised no-one has furnished this info. to date . .

Tony is one of many UK artists whose recordings (on Leader/Trailer) fell into the hands of a UK company called Celtic Music, under the "capable" ownership of one Dave Bulmer. Who has repeatedly refused requests to re-issue on CD. The most immoral instance of this has been in regard to Nic Jones; I think I posted part of that saga (the Bandoggs recording) on a Nic Jones thread here quite recently.

Some more recent CM signings were stuffed by the company failing to promote the recordings they'd made for them; a number of these were under fixed-length contracts to CM which prevented them from recording elsewhere. In effect, this led to a gap of several years in releases from these artists; some "combos" hit by this effect had split up before their CM contracts expired.

So at one and the same time CM managed to render a large and important part of the development of today's UK folk music totally out of the reach of those coming to the music for the first time (the Leader/Trailer catalogue) and restrict the recording opportunities of some very significant newer performers within the genre.

Tony Rose's recent CD recording is (largely??) a re-work of some of his material which is lost in the vaults of CM. (BTW Tony was also a member of Bandoggs. And was in very fine voice when we heard him at Sidmouth last year.)

George, Information very welcome to many I'm sure. I'm repeating what I've already said on a Nic Jones thread. Bill Leader must have been a sort of English Allan Lomax - an ear for the best material and a machine to record it. But - Why did he sell to CM, did he sell direct to them and why won't he comment on this disgraceful matter? Dr John

Strewth - when I saw this thread I thought he must have died or something, which wouldn't be right.

For a page with a list of records and a few pictures (he's a bit older than the one at the top, but aren't we all).Click here: Tony Rose

As has been said, he was on great form and good voice at Sidmouth, and he's getting round a bit more these days. He's never stopped singing, but the showbiz side of it got up his nose, what with the the travelling and that, and shits like the aforementioned Dave Bulmer.

Doctor John: I don't know the story for certain, but my recollection is that whoever then owned the rights to the Leader/Trailer catalogue simply went bust, at which point the receivers would sell the assets - the stocks of vinyl, the rights, everything - to the highest bidder. Bill Leader would have no say in it. However I have an idea Bill had sold on the rights before then.

I imagine Pete Coe could confirm/correct this, as could Dick Gaughan.

And, to be fair, when Dave Bulmer bought up all this stuff no-one knew he was going to simply sit on it for ever!

Sorry to follow-up myself but I remembered where Dick Gaughan's comments on CM's purchase of the Leader/Trailer catalogue were made. (DejaNews/Remarq users who want to see this in context should search uk.music.folk for a thread titled "ethnic flagellation" - and may want to expand their search out from there).

This is what Gaughan says:

When the question of CM purchasing the Leader stuff came up, I was asked for my opinion. Given that the alternative was probably purchase by some institution or other from across the pond my view was that it was vital that it remain somewhere in the UK as it was a vital part of our culture(s) and was an irreplacable archive of a unique period of musical exploration and development; it would have been a tragedy were it to be taken elsewhere. Were I asked the same question by anyone today, I would offer the same view.

As I had, at that time, no real reason for doubting that CM was run by honourable people with reasonable motives, my advice was to buy it and make it available on CD, the complete catalogue. To do anything other made no sense whatever to me and the subsequent witholding left me a bit stunned, to be euphimistic, and scratching my head in vain attempts to discover anything remotely resembling logic, of either business or ethical varieties.

The sum of my knowledge regarding the actual content of the purchase was that it comprised the entire Leader and Trailer catalogues which John Zollman had bought, either directly from Bill or from the company Bill had sold it to. (The latter, I suspect.)

To my knowledge (which is probably not complete) it included masters, contracts and existing stock, mainly vinyl - hence, I presume, the obsession with vinyl sales.

If John Zollman belongs to 'Highway Records' then the jigsaw is falling into place. Someone told me (can't remember who, perhaps he'll read this and add to the thread) that the Trailer brand owned by Bill Leader was distributed by Transatlantic (hence the catalog numbers LTRA) and that about 11 albums of 'Trailer' records were recorded on Transatlantic, the copyrights staying with Trailer.

When Trailer went bust, the copyrights passed to Highway Records. Highway actually re-issued a select few of the recordings (Bandoggs,Nic Jones etc) before they too either went under or sold up. Celtic Music then bought the rights to the entire 'Trailer-Leader' back catalogue and the rest we know about -- The music was sentenced to life imprisonment in dusty vaults or possibly even burnt at the stake.

BTW at Cheltenham, (Feb2000) Tony Rose seemed to be saying he was *still* in teaching(?)

I have just heard from the Tawneys the sad news that Tony is in Yeovil General Hospital (UK) following a sudden operation for cancer of the colon. He is about to receive a course of treatment over the next few weeks and has said he'd like to hear from people.

Address: Tony Rose, 13 Lower Odcombe,  Nr. Yeovil,  BA22 8TX, United Kingdom.

As you will have gathered from this thread and others, Tony is a fine traditional singer and musician, recently retired from teaching and he had started touring the UK again.

Our thoughts and best wishes go out to him and his family and we hope and pray for his recovery.

Do note that there is a benefit concert for Tony at Sidmouth this year. The Festival is donating use of the main concert marquee (with PA, lights, etc), all of the artists are appearing without fee, and there's no free entry to season ticket holders. I think the ticket price is set at £8, but I'm not certain.

We've just received our working programmes so I'll check full details and post them here.

I'll resist repeating what Sunley said above about the fate of Tony's back catalogue. However. it's very sad irony that Tony was involved with Pete Coe in trying to secure the re-release of the Banddogs album on CD, as a benefit for Nic Jones (Banddogs were Nic, Tony, Pete and Chris Coe). Now Pete is one of those involved in organising this benefit for Tony.

If you're at Sidmouth - be there. If you're in the area - take it as an opportunity for a day trip to the Festival.

Cheers!

George

FYI, this was received this morning:

Hallo Everybody,

Perhaps some of you already know all or some of this, but I thought I'd write to give you all a quick update on Tony Rose - being as how so many people have responded so swiftly by sending him greetings. He truly is overwhelmed by the extent of people's concern and knows that he will never in a million years be able to respond to everyone but is hugely heartened. Apart from anything else he has been hearing from people from whom he hasn't heard for years, and so - to a certain extent - has been living the last thirty five years all over again. Gulp.

As far as the operation is concerned he has seen the surgeon who is very happy with everything and he says that he will not need to see him for another six months. He's doing the drug therapy now and will almost certainly be continuing it until Christmas. So far things are going well. He is to be scanned about once every three months but quite apart from feeling generally healthier, the thing which is making him feel best is that he can get about and do things like fetching and carrying. Which itself makes him feel that he's doing something apart from just standing around being ill. He has to watch it of course because his stamina is not what it was but that's the sort of thing which can be planned for very easily. Helen is back working at about 75% and that all adds to a growing sense of normality. He's glad to be enjoying food again and has put a bit of weight back on, but not to the extent that he's back where he was because a lot of the weight he lost was due to the muscle wastage which occurs so quickly if you are in bed even for a comparatively short time - as Tony was. Being Tony he does see a funny side and has found his already (shall we say) dark sense of humour getting darker. The way he talks it's not so much a sense of humour as a sense of the hilarious but that's altogether another story!

That's about it for the moment. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime keep all those thoughts coming his way.

Martin Carthy

I am not at all familiar with Rose's work but it seems a whole huge bunch of people admire him musically and personally.

Performers will be topline artists (so Ralphie isn't on the bill)

Tony has mastered the duet, in fact a very rare 1844 patent system. I know this cos I spoke to him about it last year:

'Hi wes, yes, mine's a Double.'

I think it's always chancy using humour directed against someone else . .

In this case, Ralphie (especially as a musician) is "unknown" to the great majority of people round here, and even within the UK Folk scene as a whole. So it's all too easy for your suggestion that he's not a "topline artist" to appear to be a serious remark.

Given the sterling work you're doing on Tony's behalf I imagined the remark was made light-heartedly . . So I hope I've caused no offence here, to anyone!

See you at Sidmouth . .

Cheers!

Hi, George. Well, it is a weird approach to funny stuff but now I think I have gained a new understanding. This stuff you call 'humour.' I guess that funny things, therefore, are 'humourous,' which, of course, is a bone (from Latin humerus, umerus upper arm) so to "tickle one's funnybone" would have the literal meaning, simply, of being 'humourous.' I get it now!

I'm still not very familiar with UK humour but I did live in Edinburgh for a bit. That was pretty funny. I distinctly recall a BBC London reporter laughing hysterically when reporting on a new chip shop in London that was selling haggis pudding. He was totally zonked at the notion and couldn't imaging anying inventing or eating such a novel thing. It was especially funnybonish to me since I was actually eating a haggis pudding at that very moment. They were available in Scottish chip shops since the invention of the wheel. Of course, by now you can probably get MacDonald's at the chip shop.

Does T.Rose appear on the Web anywhere?

It's the deep fried Mars Bars up North that really set people down South goggling and incredulous.

So far as I can see the only place you find Tony Rose on the Web is in discographies and such. And here, and some news groups.

The basic rule of humour throughout the British Isles is that you are supposed to insult people as a way of showing that you like them, to their face. (Except it tends not to apply to women, at least not if you're a man. )

And in general it's only when they aren't present that you're supposed to say nice stuff.

If you don't like people of course it tends to be the other way round.

Quite how that applies on the Net is unclear, because the distinction between being present and absent isn't clear. And there are different rules for performers on stage as well. You only say someone is rubbish if you are on stage with them and they are clearly better than you.

Sorry about this inconsequential drift.

See you at the Sidmouth concert, those who are going to be there, God willing.

Abby, 'the only record store in the world that has any of his stuff'? If you're prepared to go world wide (or for anybody in the UK), Tony's available recordings will always be on sale from 'The Whole Wide World', at the same address as for the fund that I gave earlier in in this thread. They've got an email address too, but I don't know it offhand. Anybody with any music magazines handy could put it here?

The South Petherton Benefit Concert, already mentioned , features Cyril Tawney and the Yetties September 7th Details 01935 822 911.

There is also a Benefit Evening on Sunday 2nd September at the Globe, Topsham, Nr. Exeter with Cyril, Sean O'Shea, Margaret Duffy, Dave Lowry, Barry Lister and the Westcountry Dance Orchestra. Details 01395 577 605.

Tony continues to have a positive attitude, and sounds quite lively, retaining his dry sense of humour.

Wes W & George H
For heavens sake !!!!!!
Happy to be an anonymous contributor to this thread.....
The whole point of this thread is to make huge amounts of money, and send a lot of good feelings for a dear friend.....
Best of luck to all events taking place. It couldn't happen to a nicer person.
As for whether I'm "top-line" or not......It don't amount to a "hill'o beans"....just very grateful that I'm healthy.
Love and stuff Ralphie

You may not care whether we appreciate you, Ralphie, but that ain't going to change the fact that we do!

As, indeed, I'm sure Wes W does . . take it as a bit of "mutual clarification" rather than a disagreement!

Enjoy Womad, then get tons of sleep, 'cause you won't be getting much the following week . .

Cheers!

G.
