In the "why we gravitate to mudcat" thread, Judy mentioned that she opened up threads that she wanted to their own windows. If you have netscape 4, it's easy to do this -- just right click on the thread and choose the top item in the menu. Then you can read threads off line, compose your responses, log back on and submit those messages.

Netscape 4 has so many neat tricks it's hard to list them all..'easy to file' bookmarks, the 'Personal Toolbar' for one click access to your favorite places,(Mudcat is #1 in mine!),the ability to change font size from the keyboard, the ability to look at all the pages you've accessed for the last 'X' (you set it!) number of days and pick one to go back to..(so handy when you forget to make a bookmark!)

Do I sound like a Netscape fan?? yep......

Using a different frame for reading threads is a good idea! It solves some of the problems I have been experiencing when I go to another thread for reference and come back while composing a message.

If you happen to use X-windows (with a 3 button mouse) just click on the thread with the middle instead of the left button. The thread will open up in its own frame.

What fun to see my name for a thread! Not only can you open each thread into a window but you can even do it offline (sort of):

I load in the forum and go offline. Then I open each thread I want to read into its own window and click the stop button (since I'm not connected.) I windowshade them closed (Mac). My desktop is full of of windows. I've had as many as 20. I wonder how many will make the computer crash? When I'm ready, I go back online and click each window and hit return which starts them all loading. I read one while the rest load and then go offline again to read and respond.

Bill D: where is the "personal tool bar"? And the other things you mentioned? Gosh, it looks like there's a bunch of stuff that might be of use that I don't know about. God forbid I should try to read the help file. It's like this neat picture cataloguer I found; iView. It is very easy to use and then I started READING the manual. Wow! it does all sorts of things. You can make a thumbnail poster or export in HTML. (I'm trying to make a website).

One thing someone told me about in Netscape is you can highlight one of the bookmarks and then command+i for info and you can see the actual URL and change its title and write comments. (My bookmarks are getting out of hand)

Glad to have been of some help
enjoy!

Now, just so you Netscape folks don't get too snooty, let me tell the Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) folks that they can do the same thing with this key combination:
ctrl-n
This leaves your first window open, and then you can go on and select a new thread. Then you can disconnect and read the open threads offline.
They're both good browsers - it's mostly just a matter of taste and what you're used to. The only thing I've bound that Netscape can do that I can't do with MSIE is read blinking text like this:

Judy...you can indeed do many things with the bookmarks...even back in Netscape 3, you could write commentary about the bookmarks, now in N4, you can drag a bookmark directly to the folder you want..(click on'location'...hand appears...keep holding down and drag left to bookmark symbol...bookmarks appear..keep holding down and swoop thru your layers of bookmarks [you DO have them neatly sorted, don't you?] until you get to the exact place you want it..[line shows you]..then let go.

If you DO have N4, you should have 3 barred arrows at left end..each controls a row of menus....the middle one should be you 'personal toolbar folder' which is like a set of bookmarks that is always there...you put things in it just like any bookmark folder, and you can name it by the same trick as you name ANY bookmark..click 'bookmarks', click 'edit bookmarks', which brings up the HTML file..highlight the one you want, click 'edit properties' and you get a box to rename it or write stuff about it...the 'file' part of that menu is VERY important...allows you to set all the controls for bookmarks..create new folders, etc...you do need to read the help file to get all the stuff...(or meet me in some chat room and we go over it line by line! *grin*)

it just goes on & on...

(by the way...I have 6 picture cataloguers at last count!!..tsk!)

Joe is right, of chorus. But you don't need to remember control-N for MSIE 4 to open a thread to a new window -- as with netscape, just right click and choose the correct menu item (open to new window, same words as Netscape.)

For those fans of little advantages of both MSIE and Netscape, there are programs out there designed specifically to keep your bookmarks the same in both programs. One is found at the No nags site (great site for free, or un-nagged shareware, www.nonags.com). You can look for yourself at no nags web tools, http://www2.thecia.net/users/dedcat/nonags/webt32.html (and search for example for "webmarks") or you can just download directly from the webmarks site: http://members.aol.com/BarnStSoft/webmarks/SetupWebMarks.exe It's an example of yet another utility that I mean to get around to installing sometime on my machine.

Yup, Steve, the idea is to run as many different gimmick utilities as you can, until you can get your computer to crash on a regular basis. I've become quite an expert at that. The way to get good at fixing other peoples' mistakes is to make bigger mistakes yourself. I'll betcha Max could tell us a few juicy stories about that. No doubt, that's how be became the veritable genius he is today.

But your right-click trick for opening a new window doesn't work for me on MSIE 4.1 - I get all sorts of other choices on my menu, but not "new window."

Really? I've got MSIE 4.0 version 4.72.2106.8. The choice is the second from the top and it's called "open in new window" with the n underscored (to indicate, I guess, that control-n also works). Seems odd they'd drop that in 4.1, but they again, I hear they've dropped the fax utility from Windows 98 (but that it won't delete your present fax capability when/if you install Win 98).

Curiouser and curiouser, I am using the same version of IE as you Steve, and I don't get that option on the pop up menu. Control n works fine though.

G'day,
I usually start MSIE 2 or 3 times at the beginning of a session. This is equivalent to opening a new window. Reading one thread while downloading another (or a page from another site) is a great productivity improver.

Another productivity improver is to click on File, then Save As File. This will allow you to save the page with a .htm extension, possibly on the desktop. You can then view this offline at a later date by double clicking on the file's icon.

Cheers,
Alan

Good tips. I know about and use that bookmarks drag and drop one. My bookmarks are all very neatly organized but it still doesn't help with the excesses. Of course I CAN'T throw any of them away!

I don't seem to have three barred arrows, only two: one is the tool bar, the other the location window. It could be the difference between the Mac and Windows versions

I have tried out many picture cataloguers and find that iView(http://www.hotcakes.demon.co.uk) does everything all the others do but easier and better. Saving space now, threw away almost all others. Windows people I've talked to seem to like Thumbs Plus. I tried the Mac beta and found it very Windows-like (which is not a compliment) Thanks for the info
enjoy!

Judy...tsk,,I hope that Netscape is not that different for MAC....(you DO have version 4?...those bars shouls BE there!)

for simple and total ease in picture viewing, ACDSee wins hands down! It is NOT for manipulating or decoding...just quick viewing and slideshows, etc...that allows it to be small & fast
http://www.acdsystems.com

for 'messing' with images, LviewPro, CompuPic, and PaintShop Pro, with the latter doing almost as much as Adobe PhotoShop...(I use a 16 bit shareware version that is just 'out there' as an old version left up as 'bait' to get you to buy the new one.) I think CompuPic is the best compromise if you are only going to have one--it will read, decode, make thumbnails, show slides....and dozens of other tricks...but it comes in a limited time demo form, like it, you buy it...( I bought it after about 3 days!)

and yes, ThumbsPlus is also very nice..( I really like trying them all...I am fascinated by the programs that are available to help us play and work in this wonderful new world...chasing them down has become a real hobby..)

oh...forgot to mention..ACDSee is the only viewer I have ever seen that allows you to describe the image! There is a field that lets you enter a title, or the origin(WWW address...who sent it to you..whatever)..and as you view adustable size thumbnail previews, this description appears in a bar at the bottom and in a table at one side along with size and format...really neat stuff!)

Yep, 4.01 but there's an update sit that I have sitting around waiting for me to install it. But I'm having too much fun with my digital camera (and reading this and the camera forum) to learn any more.

enjoy!

Oh! Judy...one 'possibility'....in my Netscape (4.05) under 'VIEW' at the top of the page, the three top items are to either show or hide the three toolbars! It could be that your personal toolbar is just hidden!...(it should still exist as a item in your bookmarks)
