Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: EBarnacle1 Date: 06 Aug 02 - 10:46 AM You are welcome to come to the Monmouth County Clearwater Festival in Asbury Park, August 17 and 18. There is bus service from Philadelphia. Springsteen generally shows up on Saturday. There's a great sing on Saturday night. If you let me know well in advance, I may be able to arrange a doss. |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Ebbie Date: 06 Aug 02 - 11:15 AM You're making me homesick! I spent my teen years in Virginia, in the rural area between Staunton and Waynesboro. I have visited since but it's been years. We used to go to the Old Dominion Barndance in Richmond- in those days, Mac Wiseman, Rose Maddox and others were stalwarts there. Once a month we'd go to Harrisonburg to an all-night Gospel Sing. Spent a lot of time on Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beautiful country. We'd also go to the Luray Caverns ("Now I'm going to turn off the lights- and you will see what perfect black is. If it frightens you, just close your eyes."), and Crabtree Falls for hiking and picnicking. The Statler Brothers, btw, are from Staunton, and I think, still live there. Have a wonderful time there, Greg! |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: GUEST,fretless, at work Date: 06 Aug 02 - 02:14 PM From Staunton, you could also head south to Lexington -- a well preserved 19th century town that served as the setting for the movie Somersby. The Lime Kiln Theater, on the outskirts of town, will be presenting "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)" while you're in the area. Worth seeing if you are in the mood for a good laugh at the Bard's expense. For more serious Bard, Staunton is home base for Shenandoah Shakespeare and the newly constructed Blackfriars Theater reconstruction. The town is also home to folk musician Bill Wellington, but I don't know if he will be around when you are there. Back in Northern Virginia, there are bluegrass (and old time, but much more b than o-t) jams in Arlington on afternoons of Aug. 11 and 25 in Lyon Park sponsored by Capitol Area bluegrass and OT Music Association (http://www.homestead.com/caboma/files/default.html). And come prepared for hot weather -- we're down in the 80s F. today, but last few weeks have been more generally well up into the 90s. |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: greg stephens Date: 06 Aug 02 - 06:17 PM This heat talk is starting to worry me. Anyone fancy a meet-up in Frobisher Bay? Apart from that, looks like Sunday August 18 at Bobert's is a goer. Maybe better wait for him to confirm, but me and Kate are all for it. |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Bobert Date: 06 Aug 02 - 08:47 PM Hey, the 18th it is Greg. We'll do a little promoting next week. I have a friend who wants to bring his audio visual equipment out here so we might get sometning to remember it by. Hope a few Catfolk will make an effort to come on out. It's a real mellow place and should be comfortable as its in the mountains. Bobert |

Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Fortunato Date: 08 Aug 02 - 09:14 AM Kate, and greg stephens I'm glad the 'Mile gig worked out. If you like I'll do some promo work for you. If you PM me a blurb I'll give it to a folk radio show here in DC for this weekend, and do a listing in the Washington Post Weekend Magazine if time permits. I think the deadline is this Friday for 8/17. And of course I'll try to round up all the area folkies I can. cheers, Chance. |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: GUEST,maryrrf Date: 08 Aug 02 - 09:48 AM Greg, I'm here in Virginia (Richmond) but unfortunately I'll be away most of the time you're here. If you happen to be in the DC/Northern Virginia area on Sunday August 25th stop by at Pat Troy's Ireland's Own in Olde Town Alexandria. I'll be playing there from around 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm - you're welcome to do a set there and sometimes the tips are pretty good! |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Fortunato Date: 08 Aug 02 - 10:31 AM Maryrrf, I'm going try and make your gig. What time do you start at 'troys? regards, chance. |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: GUEST,maryrrf Date: 08 Aug 02 - 10:51 AM I start between 6 and 7 pm - more like 7 pm now that the traffic is so bad between Richmond and DC and I play till closing, which depending on the crowd can be between 11:00 pm to 12:30 am. (I'm obviously not a pretty sight Monday mornings at the office!) One Mudcatter played a trick and came - didn't identify himself but left a card saying a mudcatter had been there. I'm still wondering who it was! Anyway I'm there just about every Sunday between now and the end of the year - taking the 18th off to go to Irish Fest in Milwaukee and then a couple of weekends in October to go on vacation. Any mudcatter that wants to come up on stage and do a few numbers is more than welcome! |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Fortunato Date: 08 Aug 02 - 11:06 AM Well, Maryrrf, thanks, but we don't do any Irish stuff, leaving that to the folks who do it so well and sticking to the Old Time Country we do best. That's a long gig you have there, and a long road home at midnight you must have the stamina of youth! I'll try to make it down to 'troy's soon. regards, Chance |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: GUEST,maryrrf Date: 08 Aug 02 - 12:17 PM Fortunato, I do mostly Irish, some Scottish, but recently have started throwing in some old time country - mostly Hank Williams, who is one of my favorites. The audience loves it! So if you want to do a guest appearance with couple of country songs you'd be welcome. As far as I'm concerned Old Time Country is the only kind of country - what we hear on country radio today is mostly bland insipid I don't know what! By the way I'm not exactly a "spring chicken" but somehow I manage. It's just such a great place and a great gig that I ignore the fatigue and do it anyway. |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Fortunato Date: 08 Aug 02 - 12:22 PM Good for you. Yes, the good news is Oh, Brother has opened some ears to old time country and people seem to respond to it we're finding. Well, we'll see then. We just might do a couple if we get by. Lord knows you need a break with a long gig like that! I'll check our Sundays and try to make it one soon. cheers, Chance |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: GUEST,maryrrf Date: 08 Aug 02 - 03:50 PM I'm looking forward to it! |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 08 Aug 02 - 06:27 PM maryrrf: thanks for that info, we're not at all sure what might be happening to us on Aug 35, your suggestion sounds great.Well see what shapes up. |

Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Fortunato Date: 13 Aug 02 - 09:48 AM Greg and Kate are appearing at the Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton on Saturday, Aug 17th at 9:00pm. I'll be there, come and see them! The Royal Mile has excellent food, great beers and single malt scotch and is NOT a smoky room. Come early and get a seat down front as I don't think they'll have a sound system. PM me for directions, but the 'Mile is on Price Ave in Wheaton and 1/2 block off Georgia Ave. Park in the bank or down and around the corner at the Montgomery Parking garage. Hope to see you there. Chance |

Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: SharonA Date: 14 Aug 02 - 10:30 AM I've been thinking hard about driving down to Bobert's (and looking hard at my budget to see if I have enough to spare for gas money!), but even if I do go, there's no way I can get there if Bobert doesn't answer my PM and give me directions!! Where are ya, Bobert? Send me a message! |
Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: Bill D Date: 14 Aug 02 - 12:43 PM Sharon...we are getting directions today, if Bobert doesn't get back to you, PM us!(me or Ferrara)..(don't know how far or how complex it will be for you) |

Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: greg stephens Date: 16 Aug 02 - 10:27 AM well we got here! America seems to be very hot.Got to Bobert Towers and were soon admiring a load of birds I've never seen in my life, and listening to noisy trees which emit a load whirring effect all night, which is surprisingly relaxing. Some kind of grasshopper type thing apparently. The we drove to Staunton, following in the footsteps of a General Sheridan who made himself very unpopular round there a while ago, according to some locals we engaged in converstion. See you all(well some) at the weekend. Cheers Greg and kate |

Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Aug 02 - 11:15 AM Hi Greg.....I'm sure Bobert is showing you some real fine Americana.....or at least what passes for it assuming he has a "two-holer." Let me tell you though that Phil Sheridan was a fine fellow as was another of his brethren deeply admired by those south of the Mason-Dixon Line, one William Sherman. I know this because they are both good Ohio boys, born only about 15 miles apart. I live halfway between the two towns and they certainly have a lot of stuff named after them around here! Hell, there's even a storage facility named after Sheridan's horse (Rienzi) although I have no idea what storage and a horse might have in common. BTW, their commander, fella named Grant was also from Ohio. Reading the threads I'm sure you'll be having a great time and meeting lots of fine folk......Bill and Rita will show you a wonderful evening too I'm sure and your visit to the Royal Mile where Chance and others will be with you all, should be memorable.....one way or another. Enjoy! Spaw |

Subject: RE: I'm coming, Virginia! PART 2 From: UB Ed Date: 16 Aug 02 - 03:50 PM Greg, I caught this thread after you left; glad to see you're still checking in. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the amazing number of Virginia winerys, especially as you head toward Charlottesville. We're still working on the reds, but some of the whites are fairly tasty. If you role through Richmond, I recommend Rare Olde Times on the west end of town. Friday and Saturday nights feature the owner Andy Jennings playing Irish folk songs; Thursdays is our group Uisce Beatha, and I'm not really sure how you'd chactorize us. Hope you have a great time in Virginia with a successful wedding. At this point, I don't know if I'll be around when your through this way (this work thing), but hope to see you guys. Ed |
