Bob Kotta immortalized this bit of filk. Being of Mexican/Irish descent, he could get away with it. Unfortunately, Bob passed away a couple years past. He is fondly remembered by his friends and fellow conspirators in Seattle and Portland (OR).

TEQUILA IN THE JAR
By Bob Kotta
(Tune: Gilgarry Mountain)
(To be sung in a really bad south-of-the-border accent)

As I was going over the mountains of Morellos
I met with Captain Sanchez, he was counting his dineros
I pulled out my pistole and I stuck it in his middle
Saying, "Give me all your money, 'cause I am a bad bandito."

Chorus:
Muchos gringos trabajar (* * * *)
Whack for the barrio (* *)
Whack for the barrio, ees tequila in the jar

I took all the money back home to my Maria
She saw the shining pesos and she said, "It's good to see ya"
She vowed and she swore that she'd never blow my cover
But never trust the women when they have another lover

Next morning I awoke, I had a breakfast of tamales
When the casa was surrounded by a bunch of federales
They smashed down the doors and they broke the window latches
And took me off to prison – but they had no stinkin' badges

In the calaboose they put me with all the other fellows
For robbing Captain Sanchez in the mountains of Morellos
But they didn't take my reefers, so I got the jailer loaded
And then I rode away when his mind it was eroded

I think I find my brother, the one that's in Jalisco (pron. "Hi-lis-co")
We get ourselves a Chevy and go up to San Francisco
Together we go cruising and pretend that we are machos
Pick up pretty girls, get them drunk and feed them nachos

Chorus:
Muchos gringos trabajar (* * * *)
Whack for the barrio (* *)
Whack for the barrio, ees tequila in the jar

Marijuana no fumar (* * * *)
Whack for the barrio (* *)
Whack for the barrio, ees tequila in the jar

That's "Ha-LEES-co" (Jalisco), a state in central-western Mexico where Guadalajara is located just north of the mountains of Morelos. Named for it's chalky soil, known as "jal" (hal).

Oh dear--that is too funny! I guess that is what you get with a "leprechaun-o"........( I stole that from another Irish/Mexican singer, just can't remember who)

You can't sing it without at least smiling. I think Bob likes that. If any one is coming to the Seattle Tall Ships Festival, there will be two people there with many more such songs, Mary Bennett and Andrea Aldridge. They both sing with the group, Broadside. It's an all woman chantey group.

The Cutters did it tonight at the Center for Wooden Boats, just after Watch the Sky! did the straight Irish whiskey version. Both were well done, but it was the Mexican spoof that had everybody stomping their feet.

Oh, and "Chevy" starts with "ch" as in "chug" not "sh" as in "chamois".

"Chevy" is propounced "Chebby". (To the Anglo Ear the Spanish "v" and B" sound similar.)

What makes this even wierder, is that by dropping the chorus, it can be sung to the tune "Streets of Maiami" (Which is an Allen Sherman take off on "Streets of Laredo.")

From: Jim Dixon

Here’s a whole different set of lyrics based on the same concept. You can hear the recording at YouTube.

TEQUILA IN THE JAR
As recorded by Doug Barnett on “Happy Hour” (2009)

1. As I was goin’ over the old Mojave Desert,
Dressed in faded Levi’s and a Jimmy Buffett T-shirt,
I drew out me pocket change and then drew out me wallet,
Sayin’: “Dos cervezas, señor, or what ever it is ya call it.”

CHORUS: Shirinjum durham da,
Whack fall the daddy oh, whack fall the daddy oh,
Tequila’s in the jar.

2. I counted out my pesos and drank a margarita,
Stumbled home at dawn to my lovely señorita.
She swore at me in Spanish and then called me a gringo.
I mumbled an apology and she ran off with Ringo. CHORUS

3. I went into mi casa with my brain all pickled rotten
To dream of real tequila with the worm that’s at the bottom.
The woman took my charge cards and maxed ‘em to the limit,
Emptied out the bank account and all that was within it. CHORUS

4. Next morning came too early, with headache spikes and valleys.
Then came a repossessor and likewise Federales.
I goes to draw me wallet and be ready for the slaughter,
But we came to an agreement over Cuervo Gold and water. CHORUS

5. I only got a warnin’ ’cause they thought that I was loco.
So me brother picked me up and we’d head for Acapulco.
Together we’ll go drinkin’ out in Puerto Peñasco,
And sober up each mornin’ drinkin’ beer with some Tabasco. CHORUS

6. Well, there’s some that takes delight in the mountain dew and lightnin’.
Some delight in smoothies, which I find rather frightnin’,
But I takes delight in the juice of the agave,
An’ courtin’ señoritas in the desert called Mojave. CHORUS
