I believe you've just kicked up a diamond-in-the-rough subject for a new song fer you to commense to hatchin' out. I mean a classic Dylanesque type of wordplay dirge listing all manner of surreal "signs of the end times". Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Hrothgar Date: 25 Aug 02 - 08:33 AM I should have said, MAY we burn them. I have no doubt of my ability to do so... |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 25 Aug 02 - 09:07 AM Hey, Hroth: You're showing your age. That old distinction between "can" and "may" is out the window, Bro. When my sons were in high school ten years ago, I corrected them on the difference... a question of capability versus permission and they went and asked their English teacher about the phrase (the teacher was probably 26.) The teacher said that there's no difference. The same teacher said that "exact same" as in "It's the exact same thing," was a perfectly legitimate expression. I think that it's redundant, and I mostly don't give a fig about the "proper" use of English. But then, I guess I'm the opposite different from his teacher. :-) Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: kendall Date: 25 Aug 02 - 04:47 PM I'm with you Jerry; bad grammar irritates me, whether it stems from laziness or ignorance. From a teacher? that's really discouraging! I used to argue with my ex wife on the difference between "in" and "into". I insisted that saying "I jumped IN the pool" was incorrect, and that it was INTO the pool. she saw no difference. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 25 Aug 02 - 08:34 PM What she was trying to tell you, Kendall was that after she jumped into the pool, she had such a good time that she decided to jump while she was already IN the pool, having jumped into the pool, first. :-) Jerry |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 25 Aug 02 - 08:45 PM I'm curious, Kendall. Did you tell your wife to go jump INTO the lake, or did she tell you to go jump IN the lake? :-) Jerry |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Amos Date: 25 Aug 02 - 09:15 PM The two expressions are exactly the same in intent, but they are not exactly the same expression. There is no such expression as "the exact same" except in the vernacular or vulgar lexicon. But that's a whole nother subject! :>) As for no difference existing between "can" and "may" (permission)) and "may" (probability) anyone who denies the distinctions involved is obviously determined not to move past grade-school levels in literacy. He who is ignorant of his language will be destined to re-invent it! A |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: The Pooka Date: 25 Aug 02 - 09:39 PM Youse guys are inferring that Usage ain't what it Used to be. Well I support that issue. Equally as important, these here teachers got to get back to basics. Whatever. I'm just saying. Incidentally, not to get off-topic or nothing, but the End Times will ride in on the BigAsteroid. 2060, possibly. (Or, tomorrow maybe. They miss some of 'em y'know. Woops!)(Sometimes I get sick of Them btw. Why are They so omnipresent-but-anonymous? Even now, They're forecasting rain, repaving my street, & planning the next War.) We pipsqueaks flatter ourselves that the Endtimes Signs will come from, or via, us. / On the other hand, the song (sic) "I Saw the Sign" may well have been such a Sign. / With apologies to Tom Lehrer, if we're gonna have songs about the BigAsteroid Extinctor, we'd better start writing them now. ;] |

Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Kim C Date: 26 Aug 02 - 05:44 PM What about improper grammar as it pertains to colorful regional colloquial speech? I know what the rules are but I consciously choose to break them on a regular basis! There ain't no law agin that, now, isther? Granted, I wouldn't go into a formal presentation without correct subject/verb agreement. After all, there is a time and a place for everything. Informal speech, however, is fair game. :-) I know the end is near because 1) Mister finally agreed to buy a DVD player, and 2) he's enjoying it more than I am! From: GUEST,C.Jim Date: 27 Aug 02 - 05:27 PM I think the end of the world has come (UK time by the way), a very strange light appeared in the sky at about 7 o'clock this evening, it was round and very bright. Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Aug 02 - 05:43 PM The world actually ended last week, at 3:03 AM, Greenwich time...but it was not reported by any of the major news sources, so everyone is simply carrying on as usual. Typical. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Aug 02 - 05:46 PM So long as we can discuss points of grammar and usage here, in despite of all the voices of doom, the end isn't quite here yet.
"Exact same" seems a reasonable variant on "exactly similar". The can/may distinction is useful one, but it's got broken down by current usage. I've nothing against changes in language myself, except when they end up with us losing useful distinctions like that, without any equivalent being coined. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Ebbie Date: 28 Aug 02 - 11:08 AM 'Exactly similar'? Now, that I haven't heard. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Bill D Date: 28 Aug 02 - 12:17 PM the end is near?? .....nawwwww. In the spirit of the woman who said to her bank "I can't be overdrawn, I still have checks left!", I assure you that **I** still have wood that is un-worked and songs that need to be sung.....(and I assure you the Witnesses AND the Latter-Day Saints are still knockin' the doors in these parts!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:45 AM I can see where 2 things might be described as similarly exact...but exactly similar? I don't think so. "Similar" means "bearing a resemblance to", but it does not mean "exactly the same as". Something which is exactly the same as is not similar, it is identical. "Exactly similar" sounds like something Blind Drunk in Blind River would say to his brother Don when attempting to describe the reactions of two local girls who both refused to go out with him categorically, and called him a "loser". In fact, the two incidents would be quite similar, very similar...but not exactly similar. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Kim C Date: 29 Aug 02 - 05:11 PM I've probably said exact same more than once. Likewise whole 'nother, and usetacould. And let us not forget fixin to. :-) Some folks here in the South say carry instead of drive, as in, I carried him down to the Wal-Mart. People who ain't from around here get a good laugh about this, but it was very commonly used in past centuries. I've seen it in a lot of diaries and letters, along with reckon and yonder. Also axe, as in can I axe you a question, is actually from Middle English. Chaucer used it all the time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: DougR Date: 31 Aug 02 - 03:05 AM So, are we trying to come up with some kind of suggestion to keep Bobert from totally self-destructing in this thread, or are we talking about English lessons? I fear for the welfare of my liberal friend in the Great Smoky mountians! The language in his posts is always impecable, so we need have no fear in that regard. In this thread we need to concentrate on suggestions as to how Ole' Bobert can keep his bones, his mind, his total being, in place! :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Little Hawk Date: 31 Aug 02 - 12:07 PM Remember, Doug, when Ronald Reagan was in office and liberals were a vanishing species? It was a terrible time! Not a liberal in sight as far as the eye could see. A desolate wasteland. Thank God we once again have a land where liberals can breathe free, dress in chartreuse jumpers if they want to, and make fun of Rush Limbaugh while sipping their mineral water. The fact is, life can become a real bore without a dedicated opposition to spar with over the eternal issues. I even heard that there was a liberal seen in Schenectady yesterday! This could be a first. They're definitely comin' back! Rather than the End Times, this could be the beginning of a grand renewal. - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: Sign Of The End Times? From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Sep 02 - 10:08 PM Hmmmm... Well, fortunately the World Wide Web has made little or no inroads into the life of the average Cuban, I'm happy to say. The ones who are living in Cuba, I mean...
