Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: CraigS Date: 21 Sep 02 - 07:38 PM The northern Welsh have a reputation for slanging off foreigners in Welsh in their presence. The Belgians used to have a reputation; speak English, they'd speak French; speak French, they'd respond in Dutch - the Dutch is so close to English when spoken that the English understand most of it! In true terms, the most unfriendly people I have come across are in North Derbyshire and Aberdeen. These are not representative of their nations as a whole, but are regions which I would catagorise as populated by a higher proportion of miserable gits than one finds in the rest of the countries. There are some very miserable gits around Marseilles as well, but it is not done these days to speak ill of the French. |

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 Sep 02 - 03:12 AM I've found them to be work colleagues who are a grade or two above mine (lowest of the low, only filing clerks are considered worse than my job, which actually ranks below toilet cleaner....), and who want me to do a job for them that they are perfectly capable of doing, but consider beneath them. Trying to pin unfriendliness down to a particular race/species/gender is IMO like trying to put a jelly fish in a string bag..... it's not only impossible, but fairly cruel and unnecessary. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Rick Fielding Date: 22 Sep 02 - 02:15 PM C'mon folks...Dipsodeb OBVIOUSLY meant "What's the most unfriendly folk instrument"! She/he probably had a fatal coronery just as she/he was typing the word 'instrument'. As she/he collapsed, she/he fell on the submit button. Well, Dipsodeb....the answer is.....Celtic Harp. You can fake most of the others (I oughta know) but you have to REALLY practice to make a harp sound good. Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Amergin Date: 22 Sep 02 - 03:37 PM no no no...you all have it wrong it is a toss up between either the tech support rep (me) or those customer's I get who mess up their servicwes or equipment and then get mad at the TSR cause they can't or won't fix it (everyone else). |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 22 Sep 02 - 03:57 PM No, I think Dipsodeb was asking 'What's the most unfriendly folk....club you've ever played at?' but was assassinated by a kamikaze floor singer for failing to compliment his version of The Fields of Athenry. Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 22 Sep 02 - 04:25 PM Nice one Rick! The most unfriendly folk song? Most unfriendly folk tradition? The most unfriendly folk instrument after the uilleann pipes would have to be the hammered dulcimer... don'tcha think? |

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: An Croenen Date: 22 Sep 02 - 05:36 PM About the Belgians: you are right, but let me explain. Those that speak to you in French when you talk to them in English, most probably are from Wallonia, where everyone speaks French and few people actually know English. (No offense meant). Those who respond in Dutch when you speak to them in French, are very likely to be Flemish and the Flemish (me being one of them I kinda know) have a past of being oppressed by the once-rich industrial-French-speaking-south (19th Century and untill well into the '50's: my grandmother was told off at school in Flanders for speaking her mother tongue instead of French) and by French speaking nobility for a few centuries. It has made them less than enthusiastic when visitors to Flanders assume that everybody in Belgium speaks French, which actually they do but as a second language. They would much rather you speak to them in English, believe me. I think the closest comparison would be if a flemish person came to England a few centuries ago and spoke French with the population. Or something like that. In any case, my apologies for my fellw country men who fail to see that actually you are trying to be friendly and accommodating by speaking French rather than English. To sum it up, I think the best you can do when going to Belgium is: check whether you are in Flanders, Brussels, or Wallonia. In Flanders, speak English. In Brussels, speak English, but when you realise the person in front of you is French, speak french. In Wallonia speak French. The best way to charm any flemish person is by speaking a few words in Dutch. They will love you for it. If this all sounds too complicated, just read it over again until it makes sense. Belgium is a great place and there is a lot of fun to be had. Worth the tiny bit of homework. With love to you all, An |

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Rick Fielding Date: 22 Sep 02 - 07:43 PM Look, as much as I'd like to accept your kudos, I have to admit that I blew it. And I'm not referring to my mistake in thinking that Celtic harp was actually HARDER to play than pipes (my gawd there are only 16 players of the Northumbrian small pipes alive today....and 12 of THEM are dead)...no....I completely missed the ACTUAL thread title intended. Do you remember that joke in which the punchline was: "NO, NO! THOSE FOLKERS WERE MESSERSCHMIDTS!" I think THAT is where the post was heading before the coronary (thought I'd spell it differently this time and see which looked right!) Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Jeri Date: 22 Sep 02 - 09:08 PM You mean "Squeal like a set of pipes" Rick? |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 22 Sep 02 - 09:23 PM Good heavens, Rick: there are hundreds of players of the Northumbrian small pipes alive today. Even I know more than 16 of them... (I originally typed Northumbrian small pies and was tempted to leave it like that, but some of those buggers are bigger than me.) An Croenen's comments on Belgium are exactly the advice I was given when I worked for a little while in Brussels in the late '70s. Worked for me. Everyone was nice to me, except for just one snotty arseole (I can't recall if he was English or American); I ill-wished him, and he fell flat on his face as he tried to leave the bar. I wish I could remember how I did it... |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: GUEST Date: 22 Sep 02 - 10:47 PM I'll post again:

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 22 Sep 02 - 11:48 PM Thomas the Rhymer - The hammered dulcimer only looks unfriendly. Underneath all that confusing-looking jumble of strings lies one of the sweetest, easiest-to-play instruments there is. Of course, it only stays friendly if you it with those little hammers on a daily basis. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 22 Sep 02 - 11:51 PM That's supposed to say beat it with those little hammers.... Must be time to log off and hit the sack. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 23 Sep 02 - 01:16 AM Hmmm... O.K., thanks Bee dubya ell, perhaps I'll have to just beat it more often... Though it goes against my religion... Daily huh?... No really, I find the HD unfriendly to many types of modal shifts, and it can be too etherial... and shall we discuss climate/temperature changes? But yep! when it's right... It's FANTASTIC! |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Trevor Date: 23 Sep 02 - 09:51 AM 'What's the most unfriendly folk...' Personally, I think it's the ones who, when you're hitching a lift, stop down the road, you pick up your rucksack and run towards them and they drive off just as you approach shouting 'F--- off loser!' And what's wrong with Mr Happy? |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Rick Fielding Date: 23 Sep 02 - 10:12 AM Awww Malcolm, I KNOW there are lots of 'smallpipers' (and even small pipers) around, but I took the easy route with my joke. I would have had to go back and re-read the Rhymer for the correct spelling of 'uilleann' pipes, whereas I was reasonably comfortable with my command of the word 'Northumbrian'. However....my friend Grit Laskin may be the ONLY Northumbrian smallpier in Toronto. Cheers ....and what was the original question...."Why are Belgians wafflers?" Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: jimmyt Date: 23 Sep 02 - 03:08 PM I get it! So if I were a Welsh piper fileclerk living in Brussels, I would probably be a big jerk? And I've been chastised for benign generalizations about folk music? tsk tsk LOL |

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: artbrooks Date: 23 Sep 02 - 07:21 PM Hey! I was a Human Resources person for 20 plus years, and I AM VERY FRIENDLY, DAMMIT. Actually, I agree that the original post contained a typo...the intended word was fork, not folk. Most people will agree that the unfriendliest fork is that long two-pronged item that's used for fondu. No matter what you stick on the end, it invariably falls off into the melted cheese or hot oil. You then have the choice of fishing around for it or ignoring it and leaving it in the pot with the rest of the debris. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: GUEST,Just Amy Date: 23 Sep 02 - 07:28 PM Trust me, the most unfriendly folk ALL live in Southern California. I think it is because they all drive their cars and never have to talk to anyone. |

Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Dipsodeb Date: 24 Sep 02 - 01:18 PM sorry guys/gals been off line for a day or two whilst my comp got a rebuild it now works marginally better than before. It seems that this thread has opened a interesting can of worms....... However as someone pointed out the actual question was meant to be who is the most unfriendly folk club? This question was typed in by my mate rock chick who is almost as much of a dipso as me!! and was to inebriated to sort her fingers around the keyboard. I think she had recently visited somewhere that did not welcome her with a smile. Personally I think that there are good and bad folks everywhere it just all depends on what day you catch them, we all have bad days. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Dead Horse Date: 24 Sep 02 - 01:39 PM Every skoolboy nose that a fork has 4 prongs, something with 2 is a took, and one with 3 is a threek! (Snuffy) So if I have a wonk, does that mean I have a sharp pointy thing? The most unfriendly fork, without doubt, is the one sneaking across from your neighbours plate and steals that tempting morsel you were saving 'til last. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 24 Sep 02 - 05:01 PM Do I get a prize for guessing the right answer? BJ |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: rock chick Date: 24 Sep 02 - 05:24 PM Those who live in Norfolk, hope none of you mudcat folkies come from there? if so you must be the exception, the one/ ones i didn't meet! There again i could have just blinked to long and there you were gone, the friendly ones i mean! |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: rock chick Date: 24 Sep 02 - 06:04 PM Personally me old matey DipsoDeb, I prefer the answers you are getting with the oginal question, albeit i ran out of space when typing the last part of the question, so lets forget the last part , folk club. As for the fingers, i'm still having trouble with them tonight, and i haven't touched a drop!
|
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 24 Sep 02 - 10:24 PM Well, I've never had any trouble in Norfolk (my parents live there, but I never have) but perhaps I'm just one of Life's innocents; either people are nice to me, or I (usually) don't notice when they aren't. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 24 Sep 02 - 10:52 PM Not being familiar with Norfolk, I am really in the dark on this one... However, that being said, My impression of the question as meant was turning the proverbial corner, and I was SURE that it was about the most unfriendly flock... and to this my answer would be (and is)... penguins! Not only do they run away (when running is so hard for them), but they insist on living in Antarctica, which has virtually no tourist busses... |
Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Sliding Down The Bannister At My Auntie's House Date: 30 Mar 03 - 05:46 AM Scotch people are usually very unfriendly. Subject: RE: BS: Whats the most unfriendly folk From: Alba Date: 30 Mar 03 - 07:09 AM I think Folkman meant Scotch people, meaning people full of Scotch.(whisky) Morticia:>) As for being unfriendly, I don't think we are. Superior to the Irish.....not true..Celtic family. Subservient to the English???? LOL...eh no just defensive to the few of them that say things like "the Scots are mean and don't buy drinks".......strange statement there, how can they know that...has an extensive Scottish pub crawl been carried out to reach that conclusion?? Broad statements regarding people are generally made though an ignorance of that particular race. Stereotyping sucks! In fact that would be my answer to the question. What's the most unfriendly folk....Folk that stereotype other folk. |
