Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 05 Dec 01 - 08:36 AM Saw Tony last Friday 30th Nov. at benefit (yet another!) concert by Dick Gaughan in darkest Dorset. He is in good spirits, although still having the chemo, which gives him a hard time for the first week or so of each treatment. Current news is that the treatment is having some beneficial effect. The usual Roser jokes flew about. This time:- 'I feel a fraud turning up at these benefits looking fit and healthy!' Tony did a spot and is singing and playing better than ever. Was even seen to be sinking a short as well as beer!

Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 29 Aug 01 - 05:22 AM Yes, it was unfortunate Ralphie had to miss the Tony Rose benefit . . he'd have been one more tearful bugger to keep me company at the end of the show. Tony and family, Nic and his son were there throughout the show. Tony, family and Nic joined the assembled mass (all the performers, various MCs, etc.) on stage for the final number. VERY emotional. Also, aside from that, it was a great concert. I was delighted to see Black Swan Rapper bringing a "Youth" aspect to what was otherwise very much a line-up of artists of "my" generation. (Like Ralphie, our daughter was working elsewhere and so had to miss the gig). It seems appropriate, too, to recognise the contribution of the Festival organisers, the sound and lighting crews and the volunteer stewards at the Ham . . G. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: bobby's girl Date: 28 Aug 01 - 07:03 PM There wasn't a specific concert at Whitby, but a raffle which continued during the week with various prizes donated by the artists appearing - the first prize being 2 season tickets for next year, which shows you how highly Malcolm must regard Tony. I think the total raised was something over a thousand pounds - not bad going, and I am sure Tony will appreciate the love with which it all comes. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Ralphie Date: 28 Aug 01 - 05:04 PM Hi Guest Dick G Yes, Tony and Nic were in full effect at Sidmouth Missed it myself as I was playing elsewhere, but, by all accounts an emotional time was had by all. Good luck to the old man. (Well not that old , actually!) Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GUEST,Dick Goddard Date: 28 Aug 01 - 04:48 PM Missed the benefit - I understand Nic Jones and Tony managed to put in an appearance - is that correct? My connection with Tony is in the very distant past - I used to take the money when he took his (three weekly?) turn in compering the Cellar Folk Club at Cecil Sharp House (London, England) way back in the sixties. If he gets to see any of this, good luck matey - I've still got all the albums!

Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 28 Aug 01 - 11:45 AM So - does anyone know what the Tony Rose benefit concert at Sidmout raised? And - for those who weren't there - you missed a cracker, but might want to know that ADA Records donated 21 CDs for the raffle at the concert . . George |

Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 26 Jul 01 - 06:51 AM Abby, 'the only record store in the world that has any of his stuff'? If you're prepared to go world wide (or for anybody in the UK), Tony's available recordings will always be on sale from 'The Whole Wide World', at the same address as for the fund that I gave earlier in in this thread. They've got an email address too, but I don't know it offhand. Anybody with any music magazines handy could put it here?

Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Jul 01 - 03:46 PM It's the deep fried Mars Bars up North that really set people down South goggling and incredulous.
So far as I can see the only place you find Tony Rose on the Web is in discographies and such. And here, and some news groups.
The basic rule of humour throughout the British Isles is that you are supposed to insult people as a way of showing that you like them, to their face. (Except it tends not to apply to women, at least not if you're a man. )
And in general it's only when they aren't present that you're supposed to say nice stuff.
If you don't like people of course it tends to be the other way round.
Quite how that applies on the Net is unclear, because the distinction between being present and absent isn't clear. And there are different rules for performers on stage as well. You only say someone is rubbish if you are on stage with them and they are clearly better than you.
Sorry about this inconsequential drift.
See you at the Sidmouth concert, those who are going to be there, God willing. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Abby Sale Date: 25 Jul 01 - 01:42 PM Hi, George. Well, it is a weird approach to funny stuff but now I think I have gained a new understanding. This stuff you call 'humour.' I guess that funny things, therefore, are 'humourous,' which, of course, is a bone (from Latin humerus, umerus upper arm) so to "tickle one's funnybone" would have the literal meaning, simply, of being 'humourous.' I get it now! I'm still not very familiar with UK humour but I did live in Edinburgh for a bit. That was pretty funny. I distinctly recall a BBC London reporter laughing hysterically when reporting on a new chip shop in London that was selling haggis pudding. He was totally zonked at the notion and couldn't imaging anying inventing or eating such a novel thing. It was especially funnybonish to me since I was actually eating a haggis pudding at that very moment. They were available in Scottish chip shops since the invention of the wheel. Of course, by now you can probably get MacDonald's at the chip shop. Does T.Rose appear on the Web anywhere? |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 25 Jul 01 - 09:58 AM WesW I think it's always chancy using humour directed against someone else . . In this case, Ralphie (especially as a musician) is "unknown" to the great majority of people round here, and even within the UK Folk scene as a whole. So it's all too easy for your suggestion that he's not a "topline artist" to appear to be a serious remark. Given the sterling work you're doing on Tony's behalf I imagined the remark was made light-heartedly . . So I hope I've caused no offence here, to anyone! See you at Sidmouth . . Cheers! George |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 25 Jul 01 - 09:48 AM To re-use Ralphies earlier quote: 'Forgive my weird UK humour' Obviously mine doesn't work UK wide. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 25 Jul 01 - 09:11 AM To bloody true he does . . as various of those on the bill would be the first to acknowledge. But perhaps it was intended as more UK humour . . Hey, McGrath, we must stop agreeing like this . . G. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Jul 01 - 08:48 AM Performers will be topline artists (so Ralphie isn't on the bill) If musicianship is the criterion, he belongs up there. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 25 Jul 01 - 08:22 AM I'll repeat this on this thread (sorry but I've bu**ered the system by starting another thread with the same name! So I have to post everything twice. So I have to post everything twice.) Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the fund can send a cheque payable to the 'Tony Rose Benefit Fund' by post to: Tony Rose Benefit Fund, The Whole Wide World, 27 Market Street, Crewkerne, Somerset, TA18 7JU. Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Ralphie Date: 20 Jul 01 - 04:57 AM Abby.....A few crossed wires here I think....!!Thanks for posting Mr Carthy's message... Forgive my weird UK humour, and yes.....do go and check out Tonys records (if you can find any). A lovely man, fine musician.......but, He still should have taken up the Duet !!! Best wishes...Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Abby Sale Date: 19 Jul 01 - 02:35 PM No, no, Ralphie! Martin sent out the message - I'm not familiar with Tony Rose. Martin has done everything in the world to help out. Camsco seems to be the only record store in the world that has any of his stuff, too. Much as I'd hate to do business with Camsco, I guess if the Carthy thinks so highly of this Rose feller, I have to go buy some. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 19 Jul 01 - 02:29 PM I think it was Abby who had the audacity to admit to not knowing Tony's work . . Abby, do yerself a favour and get hold of a copy of "Bare Bones" . . (I'd recommend Tony's back catalogue only it's been Bulmered). G. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Ralphie Date: 19 Jul 01 - 02:07 PM Message to Mr Carthy.... FYI....Tony Rose was some young bloke in the 70's who thought he could sing and play a few instruments..Alright, if you liked that sort of thing, but too many songs that droned on a bit, for my taste...! Should have taken up the Duet Concertina instead....See you in Sidmouth, all best wishes, love Ralphie...LOL! And best to TR, when you next speak. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Abby Sale Date: 19 Jul 01 - 01:49 PM FYI, this was received this morning: Hallo Everybody, Perhaps some of you already know all or some of this, but I thought I'd write to give you all a quick update on Tony Rose - being as how so many people have responded so swiftly by sending him greetings. He truly is overwhelmed by the extent of people's concern and knows that he will never in a million years be able to respond to everyone but is hugely heartened. Apart from anything else he has been hearing from people from whom he hasn't heard for years, and so - to a certain extent - has been living the last thirty five years all over again. Gulp. As far as the operation is concerned he has seen the surgeon who is very happy with everything and he says that he will not need to see him for another six months. He's doing the drug therapy now and will almost certainly be continuing it until Christmas. So far things are going well. He is to be scanned about once every three months but quite apart from feeling generally healthier, the thing which is making him feel best is that he can get about and do things like fetching and carrying. Which itself makes him feel that he's doing something apart from just standing around being ill. He has to watch it of course because his stamina is not what it was but that's the sort of thing which can be planned for very easily. Helen is back working at about 75% and that all adds to a growing sense of normality. He's glad to be enjoying food again and has put a bit of weight back on, but not to the extent that he's back where he was because a lot of the weight he lost was due to the muscle wastage which occurs so quickly if you are in bed even for a comparatively short time - as Tony was. Being Tony he does see a funny side and has found his already (shall we say) dark sense of humour getting darker. The way he talks it's not so much a sense of humour as a sense of the hilarious but that's altogether another story! That's about it for the moment. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime keep all those thoughts coming his way. Martin Carthy I am not at all familiar with Rose's work but it seems a whole huge bunch of people admire him musically and personally. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 19 Jul 01 - 10:05 AM And at £7 it's even more of a bargain than I thought . . BTW Ryburn Three Step are magnificent . . Pete Coe solo is great, but 3-Step are MUCH more. We first saw them at Sidmouth a few years back and for us they were the "hit" of that year's festival. G. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Ralphie Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:03 PM Tattie B.....Thanks for that.....I'm even more P****d off that I'm playing the other side of town, at exactly the same time !!! Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Jul 01 - 06:56 PM The Tony Rose Benefit Concert is at Sidmouth Festival At the Ham Marquee (down where all the fishing boats come in) at 12p.m. on 9th August 2001: minimum donation £7. Artistes appearing:Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy, Roy Bailey, John Kirkpatrick, Ryburn 3 Step (which of course includes Pete Coe). Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Ralphie Date: 18 Jul 01 - 04:34 PM Adding to GeorgeH's message. Guest billing for Tony Roses Sidmouth benefit concert includes Pete & Chris Coe, Martin Carthy/Norma Waterson....others still to be named, maybe John Kirkpatrick?? Whatever, should be a cracking gig and, £8 isn't nearly enough. My only gripe is that I'm playing elsewhere at the same time....don't expect much of an audience!....Ah Well...Certainly not complaining!!....Go and support Tony, if you're anywhere near Sidmouth. Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: John Routledge Date: 18 Jul 01 - 03:56 PM I have just purchased Tony's CD "Bare Bones" Can unreservedly recommend. Best wishes Tony. John |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jul 01 - 02:16 PM Oh dear - I'd missed that news. Tony's a great man.
I plan to get to that Sidmouth concert. With a Mudcat T-shirt most likely. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Phil Cooper Date: 18 Jul 01 - 02:02 PM Could someone send me an address where I could send a contribution for Tony? I'm a real big fan of his music and regret I only saw him play once, when he came through Chicago in 1982. My email is coopnel@aol.com Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 18 Jul 01 - 08:23 AM Please do go to the one at Sidmouth if you can! There is also another, provisionally for the 7th September at South Petherton, Somerset - so keep your diary (or dairy, Me Zonners!) free. More news as it breaks, but big names are expected. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GeorgeH Date: 18 Jul 01 - 07:56 AM Do note that there is a benefit concert for Tony at Sidmouth this year. The Festival is donating use of the main concert marquee (with PA, lights, etc), all of the artists are appearing without fee, and there's no free entry to season ticket holders. I think the ticket price is set at £8, but I'm not certain. We've just received our working programmes so I'll check full details and post them here. I'll resist repeating what Sunley said above about the fate of Tony's back catalogue. However. it's very sad irony that Tony was involved with Pete Coe in trying to secure the re-release of the Banddogs album on CD, as a benefit for Nic Jones (Banddogs were Nic, Tony, Pete and Chris Coe). Now Pete is one of those involved in organising this benefit for Tony. If you're at Sidmouth - be there. If you're in the area - take it as an opportunity for a day trip to the Festival. Cheers! George

Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GUEST,OLdfatherted Date: 18 Jul 01 - 01:39 AM I was very sad to read of Tony's incarceration in Yeovil General - hope is now alright. Does anyone out there have the words to "The day the Piddletrentheid Jug Band hit the charts"? |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: GUEST,Revd. Mike Bartlett & (not very revd) Tony F Date: 21 Jun 01 - 10:52 AM Fell into trad music at Sidmouth 1970 via Tony Rose, and was delighted to see him again at Chester 2000. Here's to a fast and thorough recovery. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 24 May 01 - 09:16 AM For those of you with tracers on this thread who would like to send some kind of message to Tony via the web, I've started another - see Tony Rose . Sorry I missed this earlier thread. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Tweedie Date: 19 May 01 - 07:50 AM I have just heard from the Tawneys the sad news that Tony is in Yeovil General Hospital (UK) following a sudden operation for cancer of the colon. He is about to receive a course of treatment over the next few weeks and has said he'd like to hear from people. Address: Tony Rose, 13 Lower Odcombe, Nr. Yeovil, BA22 8TX, United Kingdom. As you will have gathered from this thread and others, Tony is a fine traditional singer and musician, recently retired from teaching and he had started touring the UK again. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to him and his family and we hope and pray for his recovery. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: dick greenhaus Date: 11 Feb 00 - 12:47 PM Bare Bones, Tony Rose's newest recording (CD) is, of course, available through Camsco Music. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rose From: Sunley Date: 10 Feb 00 - 03:48 PM If John Zollman belongs to 'Highway Records' then the jigsaw is falling into place. Someone told me (can't remember who, perhaps he'll read this and add to the thread) that the Trailer brand owned by Bill Leader was distributed by Transatlantic (hence the catalog numbers LTRA) and that about 11 albums of 'Trailer' records were recorded on Transatlantic, the copyrights staying with Trailer. When Trailer went bust, the copyrights passed to Highway Records. Highway actually re-issued a select few of the recordings (Bandoggs,Nic Jones etc) before they too either went under or sold up. Celtic Music then bought the rights to the entire 'Trailer-Leader' back catalogue and the rest we know about -- The music was sentenced to life imprisonment in dusty vaults or possibly even burnt at the stake. BTW at Cheltenham, (Feb2000) Tony Rose seemed to be saying he was *still* in teaching(?) |
