He is in good spirits, although still having the chemo, which gives him a hard time for the first week or so of each treatment. Current news is that the treatment is having some beneficial effect. The usual Roser jokes flew about. This time:- 'I feel a fraud turning up at these benefits looking fit and healthy!' Tony did a spot and is singing and playing better than ever. Was even seen to be sinking a short as well as beer!

Tony and family, Nic and his son were there throughout the show. Tony, family and Nic joined the assembled mass (all the performers, various MCs, etc.) on stage for the final number. VERY emotional. Also, aside from that, it was a great concert. I was delighted to see Black Swan Rapper bringing a "Youth" aspect to what was otherwise very much a line-up of artists of "my" generation. (Like Ralphie, our daughter was working elsewhere and so had to miss the gig). It seems appropriate, too, to recognise the contribution of the Festival organisers, the sound and lighting crews and the volunteer stewards at the Ham . . G. |

I think the total raised was something over a thousand pounds - not bad going, and I am sure Tony will appreciate the love with which it all comes. |

So far as I can see the only place you find Tony Rose on the Web is in discographies and such. And here, and some news groups.
The basic rule of humour throughout the British Isles is that you are supposed to insult people as a way of showing that you like them, to their face. (Except it tends not to apply to women, at least not if you're a man. )
And in general it's only when they aren't present that you're supposed to say nice stuff.
If you don't like people of course it tends to be the other way round.
Quite how that applies on the Net is unclear, because the distinction between being present and absent isn't clear. And there are different rules for performers on stage as well. You only say someone is rubbish if you are on stage with them and they are clearly better than you.
Sorry about this inconsequential drift.

I guess that funny things, therefore, are 'humourous,' which, of course, is a bone (from Latin humerus, umerus upper arm) so to "tickle one's funnybone" would have the literal meaning, simply, of being 'humourous.' I get it now! I'm still not very familiar with UK humour but I did live in Edinburgh for a bit. That was pretty funny. I distinctly recall a BBC London reporter laughing hysterically when reporting on a new chip shop in London that was selling haggis pudding. He was totally zonked at the notion and couldn't imaging anying inventing or eating such a novel thing. It was especially funnybonish to me since I was actually eating a haggis pudding at that very moment. They were available in Scottish chip shops since the invention of the wheel. Of course, by now you can probably get MacDonald's at the chip shop. Does T.Rose appear on the Web anywhere? |

He truly is overwhelmed by the extent of people's concern and knows that he will never in a million years be able to respond to everyone but is hugely heartened. Apart from anything else he has been hearing from people from whom he hasn't heard for years, and so - to a certain extent - has been living the last thirty five years all over again. Gulp. As far as the operation is concerned he has seen the surgeon who is very happy with everything and he says that he will not need to see him for another six months. He's doing the drug therapy now and will almost certainly be continuing it until Christmas. So far things are going well. He is to be scanned about once every three months but quite apart from feeling generally healthier, the thing which is making him feel best is that he can get about and do things like fetching and carrying. Which itself makes him feel that he's doing something apart from just standing around being ill. He has to watch it of course because his stamina is not what it was but that's the sort of thing which can be planned for very easily. Helen is back working at about 75% and that all adds to a growing sense of normality. He's glad to be enjoying food again and has put a bit of weight back on, but not to the extent that he's back where he was because a lot of the weight he lost was due to the muscle wastage which occurs so quickly if you are in bed even for a comparatively short time - as Tony was. Being Tony he does see a funny side and has found his already (shall we say) dark sense of humour getting darker. The way he talks it's not so much a sense of humour as a sense of the hilarious but that's altogether another story! That's about it for the moment. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime keep all those thoughts coming his way. Martin Carthy I am not at all familiar with Rose's work but it seems a whole huge bunch of people admire him musically and personally. |

The Festival is donating use of the main concert marquee (with PA, lights, etc), all of the artists are appearing without fee, and there's no free entry to season ticket holders. I think the ticket price is set at £8, but I'm not certain. We've just received our working programmes so I'll check full details and post them here. I'll resist repeating what Sunley said above about the fate of Tony's back catalogue. However. it's very sad irony that Tony was involved with Pete Coe in trying to secure the re-release of the Banddogs album on CD, as a benefit for Nic Jones (Banddogs were Nic, Tony, Pete and Chris Coe). Now Pete is one of those involved in organising this benefit for Tony. If you're at Sidmouth - be there. If you're in the area - take it as an opportunity for a day trip to the Festival. Cheers! Someone told me (can't remember who, perhaps he'll read this and add to the thread) that the Trailer brand owned by Bill Leader was distributed by Transatlantic (hence the catalog numbers LTRA) and that about 11 albums of 'Trailer' records were recorded on Transatlantic, the copyrights staying with Trailer. When Trailer went bust, the copyrights passed to Highway Records. Highway actually re-issued a select few of the recordings (Bandoggs,Nic Jones etc) before they too either went under or sold up. Celtic Music then bought the rights to the entire 'Trailer-Leader' back catalogue and the rest we know about -- The music was sentenced to life imprisonment in dusty vaults or possibly even burnt at the stake. BTW at Cheltenham, (Feb2000) Tony Rose seemed to be saying he was *still* in teaching(?) |
