Here are the words. The music, by W. S. Hayes, is the same as "Little Old Log Cabin In the Lane", "Little Joe the Wrangler," et al. It was sung frequently in the church I attended as a child. (Page 100 in the "All American Church Hymnal".)

Fry (1881) and, as indicated above by Nathan, the music was adapted from Hays' 'Little Old Log Cabin' (1871). The earliest recording was by (Frank) Welling & (John) McGhee in Ashland Kentucky 1928 (Vo 5251).

This hymn has sometimes been attributed to James R. Murray (as in Samuel J. Rogal, Sing Glory and Hallelujah, 1996, p. p. 59), but Hays is the original composer.

"The Lily of the valley" by Joshua Gill (Boston: McDonald & Gill, 1885) [Actually, Gill is the arranger.]

Hays' name is not printed on either of them.

The tune name is SALVATIONIST in Baptist Hymnal, edited by Walter Hines Sims (Convention Press, 1956, no. 87).
The authorship error might have come from Gospel Hymns Nos. 1 to 6 Complete, edited by Ira D. Sanky et al. (1894, 1895, no. 367), where the hymn (with 6/8 time) was credited to "C.W. Fry / Arr. from J.R. Murray by I.D. Sanky," whereas "C.W. Fry / Arr. by Ira D. Sanky" in Gospel Hymns Nos. 5 and 6 (1892, no. 102).

According to Christian Classics Ethereal Hymnary, it is SALVATIONIST; SALVATION is a different tune.

In Worship in Song: Hymnal (Lillenas, 1972, no. 404; tune name: SALVATIONIST), the credits go to "Charles W. Fry / English Melody / William S. Hays". What does this "English Melody" mean?

"English Melody" here probably means that the editors (or their sources) believed that rather than composing it from scratch, Hays arranged the tune on the basis of a preexisting anonymous or traditional English tune. (Cf. the usual credits for the Vaughan Williams tunes "KINGSFOLD" and "FOREST GREEN" or the Arthur Sullivan tune "Noel".)

As you've noticed if you're following this thread closely, I misspelled the composer's name on my earlier post. Last name is "Hays." Helps immensely to spell names correctly when you're searching the internet. The Library of Congress link above, or more directly at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/smhtml/sm1870Authors52.html lists 137 works by Hays, including several Carter family songs I had assumed were composed by A.P. Carter - among these is "Jimmie Brown the Paper Boy" and "You've Been a Friend to Me." Not listed at this link, but credited to him several other places is "Mollie Darling." I also found one source crediting him with the fiddle tune "Shamus O'Brien."

I have no idea what the lyrics are, that's why I'm asking! i've found a midi to play my violin along with...it's a nice little song and I just wondered about the lyrics. All the information I have is that it's a gospel song.

I HAVE NOT KNOWN THAT FRISE AND HASE WROTE THIS SONG IN1 881. AND SONGS LIKE JOE THE WRANGLER AND LITLE LOG CABBIN IN THE LANE WERE 220 FOLK MUSIC. WHEN WE HEAR THE TUNE FOLKS KNOW THIS SONG AS THE JOE THE RANGLER AND SAY THAYING WE WILL SING JOE THE WRANGLER SONG AND FORGET THE OTHERS.HOWEVER IN 1900 THE SONG LILLY OF THE VALLY THAT MORE SCHOOLS SHOULD SING MORE THE JOE THE WRANGLER SONG WAS WRITEN IN 1942 BY EARL ROBERSON WHO LATER WROTE THE SONG BLACK AND WHITE WHICH HAS AULSO BEEN A SCHOOL SONG AND STILL IS SUNG TODAY.
