It looks like it will be October. Myself, my son and daughter-in-law.
We may have to settle for the north east, as I HAVE to see New England in the fall, and we must visit New York.
When is the getaway? I don't want to miss that, either!!
Cheers, Bron.

Just be aware of how different the weather in the U.S. can be from Welsh weather. One July day I went to the Kansas City airport to pick up a visitor from Wales. The temperature was 104 F. He said it was like walking into a wall.

In the winter in the Midwest it can get to 25 below zero. But that's in a bad week. Other parts of the country are milder, of course, but not so mild and steady as Wales.

As for making tea, what's all this about boiling water? We put the tea and water in a jar and set it in the sun. A few fresh mint leaves won't hurt.

Sounds good then too...more time to plan and anticipate. October is the best month as far as weather around here. The fall foliage peaks around the middle of October and there is usually little rain that month.

Hi Bron,

April is still iffy for me, but maybe it will work out. I have one April committment, one possible dreaded event, and then I'll become a grandmother for the second time in early May. Speaking of May, Derby Week in Louisville is fantastic, but I think they close the airport to commercial flights for a day or so.

On your map, check out Interstate 65. It goes through "Nyaaaaaaashvull" on up to "Louavull" and then on to "Chicaaaaaago." (The first and last are pronounced with a clothespin on your nose.) If I'm around in April I can easily drive you from Nashville to past Louisville. Chicago is a little far, but if you can make it to there you might look into a train trip. My house is very large and should be reasonably comfortable in April, so several can camp out here (~1 hour south of Louisville). April is a beautiful month in Tennessee and Kentucky with all the spring trees blooming. (But we are the second worst Spring alergy area in the world!) Also, the Lexington area with all the white fences and horse farms is beautiful.

I've been trying to get a central US Mudcat gathering organized. Maybe Spaw will jump in here.

Well..... I am now the proud owner of a road map of the USA and Canada, and I'm reeling at the size of the place!!
Originally I considered flying to Chicago, and getting a train to New york, stopping on the way. 1200 miles!!!, and, judging by the map, that takes me through Detroit and other industrial cities.....is there country as well? There has to be!!!
My eldest son, (I'm his mother, if there are any doubts about my gender!!)is tentatively planning to come with me, and he wants to see Yellowstone Park.

So I'm formulating plan B, which involves the mid-west!

But I wanted to go to Maine!!!

Cheers, Bron.

You can get here M-F from Seattle via public transportation..really cheap if you get up early enough. I can only put up female types so I am somehow presuming you are female. mg

So far, it's just me, and favourite dates are 2 weeks in April, though WHICH 2 weeks, I'm not sure.
Fortunato, this is beginning to sound like a plan, but I've yet to decide where to start my "tour"!!!!

Thanks all for your offers, I will be in touch early in the new year.

We'd love to have you here in Silver Spring, MD. Depending on schedule we can put together lots of stuff. KathWestra and BillD and Ferrera and Banjo Bob, and MANY MORE are within a few minutes drive. You can stay with us (I'm sure you'll get many offers) and we'll put together a song session or two and arrange for a tour of the sites here in DC. I'm a short drive from all the airports. Just let us know when to expect you. How many of you will there be? Tentative dates? Arriving in New York? La? Toronto? Dulles in DC?

Wherever Bron chooses, obviously there will still be plenty of knowledgable, friendly and hospitable Mudcatters to meet and places to go to for her second trip.
There are also others of us from the UK who are taking a very close interest in this thread for our own possible future plans and no doubt we will wish to do different things.

Cablecars to FIsherman's Wharf, chanty sings, best beer and chocolate in the nation... hard call, huh?

And the Mystic Sea Music Festival happens in the first weekend of June. A lot of 'Catters go to that too. As I see it you could start your trip at Mystic, spend the month of June traveling, and end up in Albany for the Old Songs Festival. The Kennebunk (Maine) Sea Music Festival happens the week after Mystic.

Fun, fun, fun.

(Try to match that, left coast!)

Just for the record, the Old Songs Festival (http://www.oldsongs.org) is held near Albany, New York the last weekend in June each year. Many of us attend & congregate at Sandy & Caroline Paton's Folk Legacy booth. It's a great place to get together if you are on the East Coast around that time!

And, of course, if you go to the left coast you only have to add 5 or 6 hours to your trip from Europe. And you have to add a lot more time to your traveling time between places because everything is far far apart. New England is compact and travelling is easy. And there are a lot more Mudcatters in a much smaller area.

Mr. Swan's suggestion that he MIGHT allow you to taste some of his home brew is very generous. However he overstated the reaction to drinking on Sunday here in New England. Owing to the incursion of peole who tired of life on the left coast we now allow drinking and carousing any time and any where, except in some of the more restrictive churches.

Now here's the problem if you confine yourself to the East Coast. There are all of those temperance meetings, and time spent in the stocks for making music on Sundays. Really too dreary for words. You must come to the West/Left Coast where we'll start you with salty ol' Cap'n Amos, then flip you up to crazy Cap'n Swan & the too talented Mrs. Swan, then send you to the wilds of Oregon and Washington.

Come out this way!!!! We've got plenty of room, especially since Lane, Fielding & Patterson never come to visit.

Did I mention that I brew?....really well.

Llanfair, how long a trip do you anticipate? You'd better plan on a long one if you want to see much of this country. Your fellow Brits are always astonsihed at how far it is from one point to the next. For example, when Bill Sables, Sam Pirt and Ian -- were here I took them from Bath, Maine, to the Press Room in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. That is 1 1/2 hours one way but to us it is "just down the road aways".

quote from greg stephens:

"You'll get nothing but Lipton's tea which is frankly not I would call tea."

....well, neither would I!

when greg and Kate stayed at MY place, they were offered good tea! (including loose Twinings)...*grin*...but chose to use their own bags instead. 'Some' folks here can make tea, even if it is not as popular as coffee.

In any case, you have more choices than you can possibly deal with. The East coast is Mudcat 'home' territory, but there is amazing scenery and many wonderful people waaaaayyyyy out west, too!

This country is too big...it is really 5 or 7 or 15 or 25 or 48 (depending on how you count) smaller areas under one BIG umbrella. Guess you'll have to make more than one trip...*grin*

I love Earl Grey. My understanding about what is considered the "proper" method of preparing tea in Newfoundland (and other parts of Canada) is that it's much more similar to what's considered proper in England than what is usual in the US. I actually like the way tea is commonly prepared in the US myself, but I'm from here, so I guess that's not surprising ;-)

Bron - You are certainly welcome to stay with me (even if I did not owe you). I am currently in New Jersey, but I might be moving sometime soon. More on PM. Depending on when you are coming, there are various folky possibilities - we are in several singing circles around New Jersey and Connecticut and sometimes there are two on the same weekend. If you want to meet the Washington crew and can't make October, there is another gathering there in April. Festivals are mostly June, July, August, with some others. June, we go to Mystic Sea Music Festival (CT) and Old Songs (NY). August has Champlain Valley (VT).

You should definitely try to be in the Northeast the last weekend in June, so as to get to Old Songs.

We'll show ya how to mainline Co-cola (or R-o-C, if you really get out in the country), take Dr Pepper breaks at 10, 2 and 4, throw down Mountain Dew, and suck down Cajun Commuity Coffee-au-lait. We'll move on to Slurpees and frozen daquiris as you progress...Now as for Marmite, most every town of good size will have a Home Depot where you can purchase your choice of spackle, wallboard mud, or pre-mixed mortar by the bucket. Llanfair, you have opened a Pandora's Box. The problem isnot whether or not anyone can put you up but how to choose between the offers. If you tried to visit everyone you would have to devote an entire year to the effort.

Of course, I can't think of a better way to spend a year...

Yup, the door is open if you make it all the way out west. Seattle is the closest international airport, but early in the year could be downright cold (it's okay, I know how to make tea). We're doing Runamuck again in July and August, but we've been known to throw an impromptu gathering in for travelers, just ask Mrrzy! Regardless of where you end up going, travel safe!

The Cincinnati airport has Customs for international flights. By all means, before you fly into various airports, find out from a local a little about the place. With all the new security it's best to know about screening places and changing planes. And it seems that nearly every airport is different!

Bron, if you come to my place in Montana, we have a song circle at a tea shop owned by a lady from Norwich. You definitely can get tea other than Liptons in some places, especially towns like ours that have local shops and restaurants where people care about importing lots of things. But, as Bill Sables did, bring your own tea to be certain that you have what you want with you.

Definitely talk to Bill Sables about your trip plans. Bill and Allan came all the way to Montana before heading back east via Canada.

I have space for guests in California, just north of Berkeley, across the bay from radriano. And both radriano and I can offer you real tea made in properly scalded pots with loose tea (he imports Barry's from Ireland and we get ours from Murchie's in Canada). You might be able to find marmite here (Berkeley is a food mecca).

Happy trip planning

Actually Spaw had it right. You can get just about anywhere. He had my location incorrect and may have had a few others but that neither here nor there. I actually live in Maine about 30 miles southwest of the capitol (Augusta).

My suggestion is that any Mudcats who want Llanfair to visit them should list their name and location. Then Llanfair can consult a map and trace out a path. We should also list any events that may be of interest to her. (You are a her, aren't you Llanfair?)

Unfortunately I cannot offer a place to sleep. I recently made a series of bad decisions and now live in a one bedroom apartment. My living arrangements over the next few months are very uncertain. However, I'm sure Sinsull and Kendall will check in here and offer space at their places.
