I've just been watching the film "Babe" (about a

sheep-pig, as no doubt you remember.

There's a song in it which I've always heard was

a Shaker hymn -

"If I could make a day for you

I'd bring you a morning golden and new..."

but I see the tune is credited to St Saens.

Does anyone know the story of the song/hymn?

The melody is from the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony. (#5 I think.) Final movement - very beautiful. I don't know about the Shaker hymn though. Loved the movie.

Babe was not a sheep-pig, but a pig sheepdog. My border collie, who is very anal retentive, insisted I make this minor correction.

Your sheepdog is talking out of her...well, let's

say her anal retention is telling. The original

book, I think, was called The Sheep-Pig.

If you do a forum search under BABE, you will find a few threads that discuss this song, which I believe is from Sain-Saens' "Organ" symphony. here are the lyrics. Sweet song, eh?

Hmm mm, you mean the dog's anus is not showing retentiveness on this matter, don't you?

Subject: 'If I had words...' Request

I'm trying to find out more about a song. I heard it first in the movie "Babe" when Mr. Hoggett sings it to Babe to cheer him up. Later, I found a version done in the '70s (in English) by a couple of European singers.

The lyrics that I know are: If I had words, I'd make a day for you. I'd sing you a morning golden and true. I would make this day last for all time, Give you a night full of moonshine.

It sounds like an old English melody and I'd love to find a version that wasn't 'pop'.

Thanks! Peg

Thanks, Alison, for the tip. I found all the old threads, including the one with the St. Saen's symphony note. (While my fiance and I were in England last month, we saw a BBC program about royal weddings. One of these weddings (I can't remember whose) included this music, played by an enormous organ. We looked at each other and said -- Babe!! I didn't include that reference in my original posting because I didn't think anyone would believe me!)

I just discovered this site and have had great fun reading the various threads; there are some very nice people who read/write here. I appreciate your help!

Peg
