Subject: Help!..Winnipeg Folk Festival From: GaryD Date: 19 Jan 03 - 11:46 AM Hi, Gang!... Lolly & I plan on attending the Winnipeg Folk Festival in Canada this summer...we'd like any information about previous festivals, anecdotes, impressions, what to expect, facilities (especially for the semi handicapped, etc.).. We've never been to an actual folk festival, & I'd like to know also about opportunities to jam with others..or is it all a concert type of venue?... any help would be appreciated... private messages can be sent to my Mudcat personal page under GaryD, but I will also be following this thread...thanks, & Keep on the Sunny Side!... |

Subject: RE: Help!..Winnipeg Folk Festival From: SlickerBill Date: 19 Jan 03 - 08:10 PM Hey Gary. Though I'm not a ful WpgFF head, I have attended fairly regularly over the years, (even got to perform once), so I can tell ya what I know, though I'm sure there's other who will have a great deal more to offer, so stay tuned. The site out at Bird's Hill Park is fantasic. They've actually done quite a bit of work in the last year or so for drainage after some wet weekends. Basically the day is spent walking around taking in a number of workshop or concert type stages. The evenings are at the big main stage; you'll have to check for times for the "tarp" run, when you're allowed to stake a spot for the evening concerts. The festival's web site and printed info will tell you all you need to know. In terms of jamming, most of that takes place in the camp ground, or so I'm told. there are two camp grounds; the quiet one and the other one, where the music goes well into the night. There is a kind of "busking" stage set up during the day which you could sign up for I believe. Hope you have a blast. sb |
Subject: RE: Help!..Winnipeg Folk Festival From: GaryD Date: 21 Jan 03 - 11:59 AM Wow, Bill!... You've got me cranked up!.. I'm really looking forward to it! I've had some bad times recently medically, & it's hard for me to walk long distances.. I'm checking into seeing if they provide, or will provide a volunteer service like a haywagon to go from site to site. A friend of mine says he knows someone in the Fire department in Winnipeg who might assist, if they don't have anything like that now. Any suggestions? Also, I'd love to hear any more input from you & others... thanks, & Keep on the Sunnyside! ...Gary |
Subject: RE: Help!..Winnipeg Folk Festival From: GaryD Date: 24 Jan 03 - 10:34 AM Checking Back, I don't see any more input...anybody else give me some anecdotes, impressions, or information about the festival?, or actually things about other festivals you've attended would be also nice!..GaryD |
Subject: RE: Help!..Winnipeg Folk Festival From: GUEST,Slickerbill Date: 24 Jan 03 - 03:47 PM I'm not sure about the haywagon bit, but really everything's pretty accessible at the site. You may need some help getting back and forth to the camp ground, so you might want to check that side of things. Just be sure to keep weather in mind; raingear and water bottles, and possibly something for shade. Last year it was unbelievably hot and hard to find shade. But what we do is get a program, and figure out your day a bit ahead of time; often you can just spend the day at one or two stages and hear and see some amazing stuff. Then, toward the evening you're down at the main stage, and again it just washes over you. Also, there's great food there (and beer in the beer tent; but you can't bring any in, which is great, avoiding all kinds of stupidity), but besides water bottles, we bring sunflower seeds, granola bars, etc to snack on. And then, of course you learn as you go. Cheers, sb |

Subject: RE: Help!..Winnipeg Folk Festival From: GaryD Date: 02 Jul 03 - 12:59 PM Well it's been a long time since I wrote about the Festival, but here it is next week!.. We'll be going 7/10-7/15. I'm excited & hope I'll be wallowing in music pleasure.. I especially like harmonies... any favorite groups, duos, trios, etc. you know will be there that we'd like to hear? or for that matter, any particular performers you think we shouldn't miss? Also, what else can we do there?... Any opportunity for jamming & joining in with my humble voice & guitar? If you are going too, maybe we can connect... Looking forward to it.. Take Care, & "Keep on the Sunny Side!" |
