Subject: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: Ian HP Date: 08 Jul 98 - 06:49 PM Does anyone know of a recording of 'The Ripe and Bearded Barley'? I don't know it myself, but was struck by the words on the DT, and there is no tune here. Help, anyone? |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jul 98 - 03:00 AM Well, Ian, I found an illustrated fragment of the song lyrics and a place where you can get a recording. Sounds like an interesting song. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: rich r Date: 18 Jul 98 - 11:25 PM Holly Tannen recorded this years ago on a record on the Kicking Mule label. I think "Invocation" was the name of the album rich r |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: Tinwhistler Date: 19 Jul 98 - 11:45 AM Is this the same song as "Wind that Shakes the Barley?" If so, the Irish band Solas does a nice version of it on their new CD "Sunny Skies and Scattered Showers" It's a song about the Irish Uprising. The boy's love is killed by a bullet so he decides to join the Bold United Men. Let me know if it is the same, and I will post the lyrics if you want. |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: rich r Date: 19 Jul 98 - 10:36 PM No I think the song he is looking for is much more agricultural oriented or at least bucolic, but I could be wrong, it's been years since I last heard it. rich r |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: rich r Date: 19 Jul 98 - 10:54 PM Ah, sure, the database! Why not try the data base, says he. It has songs you know. I searched - - bearded barley -- and came up with 2 songs: All Among The Barley and The Ripe And Bearded Barley. The only odd thing is that they are the same song listed under 2 different titles and no cross reference. Dick? Consolidate? Maybe, please, but only if you want to. rich r |

Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: Ian HP Date: 22 Jul 98 - 03:17 PM I do not wish to be rude, but I do wish contributors would actually READ the message: "Ah, sure, the database! Why not try the data base, says he. It has songs you know." PL-EASE! My request was for RECORDINGS of the song. I said, if you read it, that I FOUND it on the database! Anyway, thanks for all contributions. It is not the same as 'The Wind That Shakes The Barley'. I managed to pick up a version on an old Johnny Collins LP, 'Free and Easy', under the title 'All Among The Barley.' |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: Barbara Date: 22 Jul 98 - 07:36 PM Ian, I suspect others, like me, thought you wanted the tune, not to hear it performed. And,if you've got the time, it looks like that Johnny Collins LP might have the song I've been wanting the words for: Free and Easy. "So let the world chug along as it pleases, I'll be free and easy still..." is how the chorus starts. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: Susan-Marie Date: 23 Sep 99 - 02:04 PM Anyone have guitar chords for this song? I learned it from the Johnny Collins CD mentioned above and I'd like to have our band do it. Since it's in a minor key it's beyond my limited skills of guitar-chord improvisation. I'm sure our guitarist could figure it out himself eventually but we only have two rehearsals so I'd like to give him a head start...many thanks for any help. |
Subject: RE: RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY From: dwo Date: 23 Sep 99 - 06:37 PM I learned it from Holly Tannen (in person! not a recording! Not that it matters!) under the title "All Among the Barley." And she said she got it from the singing of ... of ... oh drat now I have to go look it up and post it later. I think her source was Welsh. Will confirm later. Absolutely gorgeous song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ripe and Bearded Barley? / All among ... From: leeneia Date: 22 Oct 16 - 09:43 PM I looked at the lyrics in the DT and the tune in the Mudcat MIDI's. They don't go together very well. However, with a few minor alterations I think it would work. The song is in 6/8 time. The chords are Em, D, and G. It's a nice song. |
