Well done. You'll be great.

If you get a chance don't forget to mention Kim Howells' promise that the new law wouldn't hit sessions or singarounds, the one he made on the Mike Harding show in July last year. "As long as money isn't changing hands there's no reason why they should have to have a licence." I think that is a smoking gun, as they say.

And emphasise it's not just pubs, it's every kind of public place that will need a licence, if it's not to be a criminal offence for someone to play a tune or sing a song when anybody else might be listening.

"broadcast about 6:30 pm EST."

What's that in real money? As they say.

Actually I think it'd be 12.30am wouldn't it, for us in the British Isles?

Thanks all,

The presenter seemed to want a jokey approach .. which nervewracking as it I tried to work around .. hopefully that there was a stunned silence when I mentioned the £20,000 fine and 6 months in prison means the point got across .. depends how they edit I suppose!!

I don't think I can stay up until 12.30am .. anyone see if they could possibly tape it please? I'll pay postage :)!!

Many thanks again.

Just out to a World music tour (ironically featuring the Canadian group La Volee de Castors from Quebec) and the Modal UK rep thought we ought to lay off a bit now. I think there is a point inasmuch that Kim Howells has obviously dug his toes in and is making it personal almost between him and Hamish ... but I think the public at large needs to know so much more about .. especially in Labour backbencher constituencies ...

Hille. There's a program called RecAll Pro. I use it like a VCR to set the time it turns on a record function. YOu can select the input such as "What You Hear". This way you can set your computer to do streaming audio. Then set the RecAll Pro program to turn on at the right time.

BTW, You have several time zones here in Canada. Atlantic Canada at 6:30PM would be 5:30PM Eastern. West Coast(Pacific) at 6:30PM would have been 10:30PM Atlantic or 9:30PM Eastern. So, it is about to start in BC in about 16 minutes

Here's a log of As it Happens for 28th, with sound files - no sign of this. So if they were taping you maybe it'll be on another day? (These wars do mess up news programmes something awful...)

As It Happens is not taped. It is a live broadcast program and has long been, IMHO, the best current affairs radio show on the CBC or any other network. The concept is rather simple. They do live phone interviews with persons who are in the news or can comment knowledgably on current news stories.

Unfortunately the current lead interviewer, Mary Lou Findlay, is a bit of a dork, and not up to the standard set by Michael Enright and Barbara Frum in years past. My own impression is that she shows a conservative bias based on who she interrupts, versus who she provides a platform for.

However, long before her tenure, AIH had developed a tradition of interviewing UK residents on odd, eccentric, yea even goofy items of interest. IF they call you in the sceptred isle, that is the angle you can expect they're looking for. The straight news we can get from the BBC or whatever.

Understanding that--you're a novelty item, not a Huge International News Story--you can help the CBC, yea verily even M. L. Findlay, broadcast something that will make the PEL biz look very silly indeed. Rapier wit at K Howell's (etc.) expense will take you a lot farther than trying to impress upon them the utmost gravity of the situation. (The object of these interviews is to determine who is the bigger twit, the protester or the protestee. Pomposity is fatal.) Water under the bridge though, and good on you for shutting her up however briefly! I'm sad that I missed it.

The other thing you should know, before being a UK guest on AIH, is exactly how many kilometers you are from Reading. If you work that into the conversation, the interviewer will be impressed at how you've done your homework, because, for reasons too obscure to go into, a mention of that distance is an AIH tradition .

Cheerio!

Er, yes she did want to know how many miles from Reading I was .. and the size of my local Morris sides drawers .. but I said they didn't wear any anyway! And did I perform myself? .. I just No, but i was a Morris groupie and frequently stood on the sidelines and admired as they waved their big sticks .. which of course would be illegal soon.

Wow though, thanks for all the background info!

Hille, they broadcast it last night, Feb 3. So much for my illusions about "live broadcast". Not for the "peculiar British items", I guess. I swear it used to be very live.

You made the case very well and hit just the right tone. Findlay's reactions to some of your points were odd--when you mentioned the 20,000 pound fine, she giggled.

As you mentioned, the focus was on "banning Morris dancing"; this is because Morris dancing is perceived as intrinsically odd and funny. Compared to some of the other UK items they have run recently, this played almost as straight news.

The Reading thing is just CBC eccentricity. I believe that once many years ago they interviewed someone in Reading and said it was x km from London. The next night they spoke to someone elsewhere in the UK and just to be cute said it was x km from Reading. It just went on like that...

Good job.

Oh, great! I hope it came over well .. I was perplexed as to what they were angling for with warning about the Reading thing .. I'll see if the logs are up yet.. else it's $18 apparently to get a tape!

Thanks Willie

Like I said, you did fine, and for what it's worth, several million Canadians were listening.

I wasn't able to tape it cause I was listening in my truck.

If there's one thing I entirely don't understand, it's the simple question of "why are they doing this"? Obviously it's not your job to explain the opposition's position, but it would probably be worthwhile to come up with a soundbite-sized explanation of your perception of the motive for the more-restrictive PEL. (Far as I know we don't have any equivalent to the PEL in Canada, although in Saskatchewan they used to. There are, however, licencing fees payable to the composers' royalties associations which are levied by the associations on commercial venues where copyrighted music is performed.)

And even though the name "As It Happens" reflects the original premise of live reporting of current affairs, listening to the show I realized all the interviews are probably pre-taped now, cause they introduce them with a voice-over like "we reached Hille in Sussex". Makes the show easier to produce no doubt, and there's less of "hello, can we speak to Mr. Amin, please?" and "oh dear, we seem to have lost the line."

W-O
