Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cruiscín Lán / Cruiscin Lan From: GUEST Date: 24 Oct 12 - 03:55 PM Let the farmer praise his grounds, let the hunter praise his hounds, Letthe shepherd praise his sweetly scented lawn; But I, more blest than they, spend each happy night and day With my darlin' little cruiscin lan, lan, lan Oh, my darlin little cruiscin lan. Chorus: Gra-ma-chree ma-cruiscin, slainte geal mavoorneen Gra-machree ma cruiscin lan lan lan, Oh! gramachree ma cruiscan lan Immortal and divine, great Bacchus, god of wine Create me by adoption your own son. In hopes that you'll comply, That my glass shall ne'er run dry Nor my darlin' little cruiscan lan lan lan My darlin' little And when cruel Death appears, in a few but happy years, To tell me that my glass has run, I'll say, "Begone, you knave! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cruiscín Lán / Cruiscin Lan From: GUEST,Marion Date: 24 Oct 12 - 02:46 PM I'm sure I heard Liam Clancy sing a chorus that was somewhat different from either above, first two lines similar but second two significantly different. Anyone know an alternative chorus? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cruiscín Lán / Cruiscin Lan From: GUEST,Aisling Date: 06 Jul 08 - 01:00 PM There is an Irish language version of the same song: Moladh feirimeoirí cré, Moladh sealgairí a gcú Moladh aoirí bánta drúchtúla méidh, Ach is eagraigh mé ná 'san Caithim 'ch uile oíche is lá I dteannta le mo chruiscín lán lán lán I dteannta le mo chrúiscín lán Cúrfa: same as above Bacchus uasal dia na di' Dia buan is síoraí Glac mar mhac altrama mé Déanfaidh mé an guí Nach mbeadh mo ghloine folamh riamh Ach togfaid crúiscín eile lán lán lán ach togfaid crúiscín eile lán Curfa Nuair atá an bás i ndan, Faoi cheann cúpla mí nó bliain Déarfaidh sé an bóthair buailfimid Ach déarfad bailigh leat, Mar Bacchus féin a thug dom chead Chun crúiscín blasta eile lán lán lán chun crúiscín blasta eile lán Same meaning as the first 3 versus of the english version, almost to the word. I'm unsure which is a translation of which. And it's from memory, so I'm a bit iffy on the words themselves! |

Subject: RE: Lyrics req: cruiscin lan From: michaelr Date: 06 Jan 04 - 07:46 PM What does "cruiscin lan" mean? |
Subject: RE: Lyrics req: cruiscin lan From: GUEST,Rick Rickards karenrickards@aol.com Date: 06 Jan 04 - 01:51 AM An Cruiscin Lan (The Cruiskeen Lawn) was mentioned in a June 2001 copy of the Limercik Leader. The song was written by John Taylor of Rathkeale County Limerick.I have direct links on my mother's side to three generations of Taylors in Rathkeale back to John Taylor born in 1737 in Rathkeale.I not sure if he was the author but sure of the presence of Taylors there. It was great to find the words. The Unversity of Limerick advised me of the proper spelling. An Cruiscin Lan. Rick |

CROWLEY, BOOKSELLERS & STATIONERS, 146 Baltimore Street--Wholesale Ag'ts for Baltimore. CRUISKEEN LAWN. Leante ruma cruiskeen, Sleante gar ma voor neen, Agus gramachree ma colleen bawn, bawn, bawn, Agus gramachree ma colleen bawn. In court, with manly grace, Should Sir Toby plead his case, And the merits of his cause make known, Without his cheerful glass He'd be stupid as an as, So he takes a little cruiskeen lawn. Leante ruma, &c. Then fill your glasses high, Let's not part with lips so dry, Though the lark should proclaim it is dawn; But it we can't remain, May we shortly meet again, So fill another cruiskeen lawn. Leante ruma, &c. And when grim Death appears, After few, but happy years, And tells me my glass it is run, I'll say, begone you slave, For great Bacchus gives me lave Just to fill another cruiskeen lawn. Subject: RE: Lyrics req: cruiscin lan From: Bruce O. Date: 13 Jul 98 - 11:36 AM I can't see any relation between the two songs. That above is Laws Q5, and undoubtably in DT. A late 17th century broadside copy is ZN143 in my internet broadside ballad index. It stems from a jest version, #62, in the earliest English jestbook, 'A C. mery tayls' (A Hundred Merry Tales), 1526. The song was also reprinted in 18th century songbooks. |
Subject: Lyr Add: DUMB, DUMB, DUMB From: O'Boyle Date: 12 Jul 98 - 07:27 PM Heard a great variant of the song which I later found in an anthology of Irish poetry. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB
There was a jolly blade that married a country maid,
She could brew and she could bake. She could wring, wash and shake,
To the doctor then he went with mournful discontent,
To the doctor then she went and he cut some little strings,
To the doctor then he went with mournful discontent,
"I could freely undertake for to make your wife speak, Slainte Rick |
Subject: RE: Lyrics req: cruiscin lan From: dick greenhaus Date: 11 Jul 98 - 05:47 PM Helpful (I hope) hint: Never, never, never rely on a title to find a song. Especially if it's an English transliteration from another language. Try a phrase, or keyword, or even a few scattered words. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics req: cruiscin lan From: Bruce O. Date: 11 Jul 98 - 02:58 PM It's in DT. A 19th century sheet music copy is also in the Levy collection on the internet (Box 174, Item 70). Go back to the thread 'SHEET MUSIC' (You gotta see this). Click on the URL, and select bibliographic search. In the search box put 'Cruiskeen' |
