Subject: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow
From: Bobert
Date: 11 Feb 03 - 08:20 PM

Well, danged, I remmeber when I was a kid and would wake up to the wonder of a fresh snow, no school and a day of sledding down Rosemary Lane. And I remember driving down to Richmond with Marky Johnson (oh, what a hottie.... whew...) and having it start snowing on the way home to Falls Church and pulling up in my folks driveway with about 6 inches on the ground and her parents and mine worried out of their minds.

But, now this winter around Harpers Ferry, Wes Ginny has turned me into a major snow hater. It just never stops. Every time I look out the windown it's snow, snow and more snow. Hey, I'm sure it's fine for retired folks who don't have to go out in it but I ain't there yet.

So for now, just pencil me as a *snow hater*, thank you...

The poor snowed in bobert

Now, now, Bobert. Spring is coming and the snow will be all gone. Probably sometime in mid-June. The good thing is I don't have to mow the grass. I went out one morning last week and found little bird tracks all over my porch. The next day, I found cat tracks. I also found meter-reader tracks through the 2 or more feet built up in my front yard. Guy must love me.

What I really hate is the enormous amount of the stuff on my roof which for some reason is still over my head. There are some pretty heavy-duty ice dams up there too.

Bobert,I'm with you man.

I am a pure Canadian dude with many years of living in the sunny warm parts of this wonderful continent and I'm now back in Toronto.

It hasn't been above our zero mark since before Christmas and all it does is snow.Day in and day out with more forcasted for another three days.

What the heck did we do to deserve this.

Snow hater Buck.

My first real Maine winter and I have not been disappointed. I too see strange tracks in the snow. Today there were a pair through the deepest part of the snow in the back of my house. Can't imagine who or why. Then there are the little kittie tracks from Fred and huge dog tracks from a visitor lloking for Fred.

I will not be sad to see the first snowdrops and crocus. There is still ice on the roof.

Well, I went from Toronto to San Anatonio, Texas last week. It snowed there on Friday morning. I came home to more and more snow, I'm starting to feel like an arctic Joe Btfsplk. I have had enough.

I'z never seen snow. An' if you play I's Dreaming Of A White Christmas in these parts, people suspect you're making some kind of racist comment. So we got to change it to a Sunshine Christmas which don't work nearly as well. And sing about Santa Got A Sunburn.

Vive la difference. Enjoy your snow.

Ohhhh Bobert.

Nigh on 60 days of around 30 Degrees Celsius (average) temperatures, with one day of rain.

I would give my left buttock to see some sort of precipitation falling from above.

As we say in Oz - Send her down, Hughie!

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT MOVING TO FLORIDA!

Please visit, leave money, and go back home!

You can keep FL, Bruce. It's too warm for my blood.
As someone who has ALWAYS preferred winter to summer, these below zero days are even starting to get to me. How many of you have to bundle up 3 squirming little boys each time you have to buy a gallon of milk? (I'm sure there are quite few of you- I'm just shootin' for sympathy, here...)

It's been too cold to make even snowmen because the snow's too cold to pack. Grrrrrr.... or should I say brrrrrrrrr....

Bobert- All you have to do is get some window markers and color a summer scene on each of your windows. If you have a good sense of humour and a well developed imagination that should hold you over for the next couple months.

Barry...SYMPATHY??!!

It's falling again here. Looks like powdered sugar being shaken out of some great sifter up there.

Beccy, I'll bet it wouldn't be too difficult to paint a summer scene on pull-down shades, or just use some sort of flexible glue and slap a poster on one or more. Maybe all of these gloaters could send pictures of themselves frolicing on a beach or...Doug, what exactly is there to frolic in/on in Arizona? We could make a very pretty dart board.

Well, danged! I think I jinxed myself by starting this thread. For the first time in 19 years I had to have my car wenched out this morning. Danged, I was coming down my hill which is very steep and there was a woman in a minvan who was isdeways in the road and standing next to the minivan and there is no stopping on that hill so I put the drivers side in the ditch and and used the ditch to stop me. My car ended up about 30 feet from hers. Thank you ditch.

First thing I said to the lady was, "Ahhh, ya' might not want to satnd in the middle of road".

Tow bill: $75.00! Ouch! But it beats the heck out of hitting that poor woman. Whew!

Thank you, Lord.

Bobert

ps: Yep, snowed again last night, and sposed to snow Saturday and Sunday.

We don't have much snow in my part of Minnesota right now, but what there is is brittle and crunchy, and makes this awful nails-on-chalkboard sound when you walk on it. Drives me nuts. It's a little chilly (around 0F right now), but I still haven't had to put on my winter coat yet this year. :)

The snow is pretty awful here. So bad last Friday as to keep a lot of musicians away from the session. Another inch or two this morning. And next week, the long range forecast has the "S" word for five days straight. What's worse though is the cold. It was 3 below when I got up and it's now only 18 out of a possible 22. Tomorrow will see a high of 10 and a low 0f -12.

Have to go haul in more firewood -- Tom

Whew! Glad to hear you are okay, Bobert!

Here in the Banana Belt of Colorado we've had above average temps, in the 40's and 50's and very little moisture. They are predicting worse fires than last year, the year in which our governer set off all kinds of alarms with his "The whole state's ablaze!" Even over on the Eastern slope, in Denver, they've had some 60 degree days. It is weird, not for the Banana Belt, but for elsewhere.

The past few nights it has gotten down in the 20s and stayed pretty cold all day. Rog and I are enjoying the warmer climate, lack of wind, and no snow after putting in so many years in Wyoming. Though, like Sorcha, we always were grateful to have the moisture up there.

For the Northern Hemishpere:

Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!! Think Spring!!

Spring canna come soon enough. Like, maybe Friday night/Saturday morning. I planned a wedding months ago for this coming weekend. Why? Because it was not in the center of "gig season", *and* was outside of the usual "weather could be crap" window for this area...but noooooOOOOOOoooooo! We have to have not only one weather event after another out here, we have to have the worst prediction thus far for when? This Saturday. After the food has been purchased, the musicians hired, the invitations sent, yadda yadda yadda.

I have had enough of snow to last me a lifetime. Really...it need never snow again as far as I am concerned. Rain? No problems...make it like Seattle, I couldn't care, but NO more snow! Might just *be* taking that ride down to F.L.A., and sorry for the overcrowding, Bruce, but I am small...you'll likely not notice me much.

That's exactly what I mean. Like, enough is enough and we're way past that. I wanted to go to New York this weekend for the demonstartions but Mr Snow says "No". I'm so sick of it that I have just read the entire dictionary trying to find the right word and there ain't one.

I'm sorry about the wedding. I hope the happy couple don't get too unhappy over it. Bummer.

Well, if there is one bright thing that we can say about all this snow and slop: Bush had nothing to do with it... I think... Hey, maybe he did? Hmmmmm?

Nevermind this man's anti-snow rantings but...

Iz hatin' snow....

Yeah, sure, I talked to an engineer in Minneapolis today from work. Well, he was talking awful slow, ya know? Sure. So I find out it's about 3 degrees above zero, and offer him some sympathy and I'm telling him some of my friends really like having winters and such, ya know -- they say its like the only way to go because it gives you this seasons sense of time and you get to best the elements and so on. And he agreed with that point of view, that he feels that way too, ya know.

Then he thought for a minute and said, "...For about one week!".

Here near Barrie Ontario it's -25 this morning, supposed to go up to -16 by this afternoon. Just balmy, from the -35's we've had a couple times this week (-45 with the wind chill).! The kids just love it - they've had 2 days off school just because of the cold in the last week.

Spent an hour or so yesterday shovelling the drive, and it looks like we'll hafta do it all over this morning. YIPPEEEEE ;-)! Oh well, at least the exercise is productive, not like a standard 'work-out' which sometimes makes me feel like a hamster on a running wheel.

It's beautiful out there this morning, the fresh blanket of snow sparkling brilliantly in the bright sunlight, the frosty white branches of the trees tracing intricate lacy patterns against the clear blue sky. If it weren't so gorgeous, I'd start to hate it too! But I'd take the snow any day over the muddy dark "yukkies" of early spring, or late fall ...

And I can always call our friendly neighbourhood 'plow guy' if the work gets too intense. Last week, after the ice-storm/heavy snowfall we had on Tues, he came and did it - for *FREE*! (Well, he had a coffee and bummed a couple smokes). Took him 5 minutes to do what would have taken us a couple hours. Sometimes the snow brings out the best in people ...

Stay warm out there!

It's cold here on the coast of Maine. The snow crunches under the feet and the car takes forever to warm up. The cold bites through the clothing and numbs the nose. Snow, once thought pretty and wonderful is now seen as white feces.

But I remember my youth in Houlton, Maine, and smile to think that I moved south for the warmer winter. I remember days where the cold reduced the volume of air in the tires leaving a flat spot on the bottom. You had to drive a few hundred feet before they warmed up enough to smooth out. I remember winters that ran from October to April. I remember six foot snow drifts and weeks where the high temperatures nover broke -10 below zero Fahrenheit.

And then I decide I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF WINTER! NO MORE SNOW! NO MORE COLD!

I hope that job in Sicily comes through.

The good thing about real cold weather is, it eliminates confusion between U. S. and Canada/Europe. -40 is the same temperature in Farenheit and Celsius, so you don't have to convert. Isn't that great?

Yup. -40C = -40F... and I have a new meaning for the "F". Snow at the end of the drive is over 7 feet deep and it's -34C wndchill with snow drifting on the 50kph winds. But it's SUNNY.

Jeri... ice dams... calcium chloride in panty hose about every five feet or so will create a water runoff. Do not try to chip any ice away. Only put a ladder up on a calm day and make sure you have two assistants "holding" the ladder by rope from each side. Do not assume jamming the ladder in the snow will be adequate shoring. If you don't know anyone locally who can check your attic ventilation, insufficient ventlation being the major cause of ice dams, PM me and I'll walk you through it. As for now, the panty hose trick may prevent water from backing up under the shigles and getting onto your walls and ceilings.

I didn't cover my gardens last fall, because I was recovering from that surgery, so now I am afraid, without the snow cover I might lose a lot of plants. The frost is about 6 ft. deep (or more)
A lot of businesses are doing bad here too. No snow for snowmobilers, and a lot of folks rely on that business up here.
I suppose we are due for that foot of snow though, usually comes in March if nothing else.
Hang in there Bobert, not much longer, but since you are semi-retired and have snow, grab a sled and find a hill and go out and enjoy!

I'm about worn out with it this year. More snow and colder temps for a longer period of time than usual.....Much like the blizzard years in '77 & '78. Making it even more like that is the fact we are now waiting on the arrival of a major storm bringing first up to an inch of ice, followed by 6-8 inches of snow and then changing back to ice....all this between 3 PM today and 8 PM Saturday. That's one of the worst combinations for roads, power, etc. I grew up here and left for warmer climes after the '78 blizzard. Why the hell did I move back here?

Spaw.....just another stupid Buckeye

When we had our ice storms nearly two weeks ago, the most important piece of equipment, besides the wood stove of course, was a Coleman stove. Starting the day without a hot cup of tea would have been just awful.

Got a Coleman stove - just don't got no fuel. Got a fireplace that doesn't really heat the house up. Got 2 wood stove hook-ups and no wood stove. If my power goes out for more than a day, I'm screwed.

Gnu, thanks. It doesn't seem like anything's actually coming in, but it hasn't been warm enough to melt anything recently. I had a look yesterday and it seems the ice is on top of a layer of snow (I figure the sun just melted the surface - it's on the south side of the house) with more snow on top of that. A bunch of it has come off. I figure it get's warmish, breaks and slides off the snow. It doesn't seem like the ice is caused by the stuff freezing as it tries to run off. So maybe it's not a proper ice dam.

I believe the ventilation is good. I bought calcium chloride, I'm pretty sure there's some panty hose around here, but there's no way I'm getting a ladder up to the roof on that side of the house (there's a wicked slope down from the house), and I'm not walking around up there at the present time. Thought about opening a window and swinging stuff up on a cord.

I believe they made February with only 28 days because that's about all we could take... and even that's stretching it.

Ah yes, the winters of 1977 and 1978. In 1977 we were flooded out of our home by an ocean storm that put three feet of salt water in the road and floated a cake of ice 20 feet long and 1 1/2 feet thick down into our front yard. In 1978 we were snowed in. The storm started around midnight and by the time we left the house at 4:00 AM we knew itwas gonna be bad. I drove my wife to work and stayed there until she was ready to go home. It took us two hours to drive the three miles back to the house in a 4 wheel drive Jeep pickup. We had to park and struggle the last 100 yards on foot.

And now I'm back living in the same area after living in Florida, Georgia, and Rhode Island. Spaw, you don't have to be a Buckeye to be stupid. Sign me up for that list.

Jeri... sounds like you're okay. Just keep an eye on the soffit return (the flat underneath of the eave) and the exterior walls and ceilings near the top of the walls. If you see water or staining, get that pantyhose out there and then check the eave ventilation. As well, if you get a water stain on the ceiling, poke a hole at the stain and let the water drain to help prevent further staining and damage. Just don'y use anything too sharp and don't go any deeper than necessary to get the water running - you don't want to hit any wiring.

Brett, I've lived in Virginia (D.C. area), the UK and Texas. Loved the weather in Texas, but I missed autumn - trees went from green to brown. (I use the term 'trees' euphemistically since where I was, they were mostly mesquite.) Same sort of autumn in the UK except it rained all the time. Oh, but when the sun came out, it was lush green. Virginia had all the season, but flowers were still growing in December and winters were usually quite mild. Anyway, add me to the 'stupid' list.

More snow on Monday. Can't complain. I have only fallen once. Of course that was as I waved to a new neighbor who goes by eyes averted now. Probably thinks I was drinking.

My family thinks I am crazy for moving to Maine. But I love it. The sunrises and sunsets are filled with shades of purple and blue I have never seen before. And I can see stars at night, lots of stars.

WE have something around 14" but decreased a bit from several periods of sleet and are expecting another 6-12 in the next 18 hours and it's been coming down for about 40 hours now. DC/Baltimore seems to be going to get the works in about half the time and, according to forecasts, NYC will get it in an even shorter period.   About the same amount of precip/snow in every case, just a time difference in how fast it all comes down. The ice is still coming down in NC. We've got over two inches of ice piled up here.

I just got back from the studio-finished our new CD, Bluegrass Boogie (listenening to it as I type).

Not many cars are out.

My parents in DC say they might get two feet.

well - it took two hours to get to baltimore - but things got better as I headed north on 83 - almost "normal" by the time I reached Harrisburg - and no snow at all from williamsport north! about 10 hours for a seven hours trip - not bad, all things considered!

Danged! In Alaska you'd have to go up about as far north you can get to get the kind of temperatures you're reporting, about -25 in Barrow. In Fairbanks, about 600 miles north of Southeast, the temps are hovering around -10. WE stand at about 40+ and have been for days. No snow. This is Alaska, for pitys sake.

Yep. I think it's Nature's way of rebelling against the vacuum in Washington D.C.

Well over here in the UK, our corner of Kent did get about 4 inches of snow at the beginning of January. A freak snowstorm (I don't think it was much deeper) hit the Essex/Herts area area a few weeks ago and caused people to spend the night in their cars on the M11 motorway. That's the way it works over here, heavy snow is relatively rare in southern England and so none of the transport services are geared up for it when it hits. Mind you, we also had a few of the hotest January days on record this year - there's nothing predictable about British weather. Today it's dry warm and sunny and except for a chilly wind, a beautiful day.

Addendum to my previous "Stay Out of Florida" proclamation:

Folk (and particularly Celtic) musicians are exempt from said ruling. In fact, they are welcome to camp out on my property for as long as they wish. Please bring tent, Coleman stove, and instruments.   A decent sleeping bag is a good idea too as we're talking NORTH Florida here, where nights in the 30's (F) are the norm for this time of year. My goodness! You peole south of here have it rough. I've been hearing the reports on the radio and my hat's off to you. Here in Maine we can deal with lots of snow though we haven't had to in several years. This year is an old fashioned Maine winter with plenty of snow to go around and temperatures hovering around zero (F). I talked to my mother on Saturday night and she reported -27 F in Houlton, Maine. That just reinforced my idea that I moved to southern Maine for the warmer weather. At my house it was up to -5 F.

We are supposed to get some snow out of this storm though the predictions are all over the board. I've heard 4 - 6 inches but someone just told me we should get 6 - 12 inches. We'll see.

They've also predicted temperatures in the 40s this week! I am really looking forward to warmer weather. I'm supposed to fly out to southern California for next weekend and the long range prediction is for a "wintery mix" on that weekend. Wish me luck. I hate to fly.

As I wandered down the hall here at the office I noticed the windows at the end of the building. The snow sliding off the roof has now piled up to cover them completely. They will not see anysunshine until late March or Early April. We are luckier at our end. The snow is only up to the sills of the windows. There is a protective shelter over a door at the other end and it channels the snow sideways over the windows. Earlier this winter a snow slide broke the window and covered one of the desks with snow and broken glass. Fortunately the person who works there was in my office at the time.

Just another Maine winter.

The only way to deal with a long driveway is to park at the head of it; been doing that for 25 years now. I once had a plow man who would do the 300 feet for $15.00. It made walking easier, but the job did not allow for cars.

Today I fully realised how much passive solar heat I have been getting. The gray snowy sky has made it totally impossible to get the house comfortable. It's fine upstairs and near the woodstove, but the rest of the house is still chilly, and a lot moreso than when it was only 1 or 2 degrees, not today's 12.

Spent a solid hour shoveling this morning. Jeez - I'm in better shape than I though. Back didn't get too tired, arms didn't, I didn't feel like I was working too hard. I guess I've had a lot of practice.

I called to find out if my eye appointment was cancelled. It wasn't, so I cancelled it. Called to find out if work was cancelled - nope, only starting at noon. I whined. Not going in until tomorrow - it's just too dangerous to drive. I DID go out to buy necessities - corn chips, a candy bar and some other junk food.

Tom, I don't have drifts, but the small mountains of snow formed by the town plow and the local plowboy lads is over 8 feet on either side of the driveway. Maybe I'll go out later and carve them into nice lions or something.

Now Bobert, I haz no idea what yur talking about. I just spent over an hour trying to put a dent in the snow in our driveway. Finally some kids came along and asked if I wanted any help. I told them I'd give them ten bucks "just" to clear out the drift at the end of the driveway. It was four feet high, of compacted snow and sand that the snow plows had pushed into my driveway. I worked with them on it, and the three of us shoveling, and then clearing it out with a snow blower took us almost a half hour... to go six feet. I'll go out for my third shot at the driveway, and I haven't done the sidewalk along the side of the house, or in the back.

I keep saying to myself, "This is a good day!" Thank God I have an operating nrevous system so I can feel every ache in my joints and in my back. I thank God that I can see over the four foot drifts. And thank God I don't have to go anywhere today so I can lie here on the floor and groan softly. If I didn't have a voice, how would I groan?

All that said, a woman we've been visiting for the last year, who had no family or friends, died last week. We found out when we went to visit her on Sunday. She had been in a lot of pain, and had to go on oxygen. She died alone, with no one to hold her hand or be with her.
Her funeral is tomorrow and I don't know if we'll be able to get through this snow to go there. If we don't I don't know if there'll be anyone there.

Now that I mention it, this IS a good day. Tiring, though. So how come God didn't make snow in colors? It would at least have been more interesting to shovel.

" So how come God didn't make snow in colors?"

Well, let's see, you've got your yellow snow that you shouldn't eat, and the gray stuff that appears along roadways late in winter...

But then there is the reflection of light on snow. In the bright sun the shadows are pale, pale blue where the snow reflects the blue sky. At dawn and at sunset the snow takes on the red and gold of the sky and reflects a pink glow. And in the bitter cold, when the northern lights are particularly bright you can see the green flickers in the ice crystals.

Snow comes in colors, Jerry, you just have to be there, in the cold, at the right time, in the silence, for the greatest light show on Earth.

But I still hate snow!

Maybe Robert Service said it best:

You know what it's like in the Yukon wild
When it's sixty-nine below;
When the ice-worms wriggle their purple heads
Through the crust of the pale blue snow;
When the pine-trees crack like little guns
In the silence of the wood,
And the icicles hang down like tusks
Under the parka hood;
When the stove-pipe smoke breaks sudden off,
And the sky is weirdly lit,
And the careless feel of a bit of steel
Burns like a red-hot spit;
When the mercury is a frozen ball,
And the frost-fiend stalks to kill --
Well, it was just like that that day when I
Set out to look for Bill.

WEll, the roads are pretty good but it was this morning before we got one car out of the garage. The van may be there for a few more days. They really tackled the roads bigtime and the major stuff is clear.....getting to it is a problem. Getting out of my garage was a bigger one. The drive is also two lanes wide, but the camper has one lane blocked so you have to do this swerve thing around it with Karen's car. Then there's an immediate turn into the alley with the "barn-garage" right on the corner and the guy behind us has a stockade fence just a foot or so off the alley.   Unfortunately, her car is the front wheel drive and the friggin' van can get stuck on level ground in it's own tracks! Anyway, with drifts, there was about two foot in the drive which is now down to an even layer at about 6 inches sorta'......In any case, we got the Dodge out so she can go to work.

It's pretty though.......Watching the dogs up to their shoulders making paths........and Sissy trying to keep the snow off of her ass while she craps...........ah, winter...........................

We just got two feet in Boston (after a foot about ten days ago). Very unusual given the last few years (last winter average temps were inthe forties and no precipitation to speak of; downright eerie, and no snow in the Berkshires, even...). Lots of snow and lenty of cold temps since October, basically: an old-fashioned winter indeed...

I grew up in western NY and am no stranger to snow. I get irritated when people in this city don't shovel their sidewalks. My landlord doesn't even provide us with a shovel. Last week I was using our coal shovel thing to create a thin path on most of my street's sidewalk on this side; this morning the guy next door did the whole street's sidewalk with his snow blower; so I guess all that shovelling karma paid off! I also helped an old woman shovel really wet heavy snow off her steps one day; no on elese in her three-family unit could be bothered I guess...

I find the snow beautiful and love to get out into it. Winter hiking is the best. Walked to the store and the laundromat in the midst of a windy blizzard yesterday. Invigorating at first, then a bit much. Decided not to go cross-country skiiing until that wind stopped. I am off to do some today, probably in a half hour or so...
all colleges in the city were closed (even Harvard I think and they never close) so I did not have to work today...

We lost power briefly last night; I read by candlelight for a couple hours..

I am really glad i am no longer a car-owner--Boston in winter is rough on drivers!

You got the right idea, Jeri. I'd like a full rainbow with pyschedelic tie die patterns. But, I also appreciate Naemenson's comments. I think the reason why God wasn't into tie dying is because nothing could match the beauty of the subtle variations of snow with the sun reflecting off of it. I could easily live without dirty snow though..

I like to think those subtle variations of color are some kind of compensation for having to deal with the cold and snow. But these days I don't think it is enough of a compensation.

This weekend I woke early enough to watch the sun come up over Swan Island. The snow reflected that faint orange pink as it climbed into the sky. Then it glinted on the weather vane on the onion dome of the old Russian Orthodox chruch out the other window. Very pretty.

However, I will try to forget all about those sights when I am walking on the beach by the Pacific Ocean next week.

Arghhh!!!

Just got Tom's car shovelled out (around 3 pm). While he was gone, I further cleared his spot and started carting snow away from my car. The thing is the snow is already piled so high that it's a workout to throw each new shovel up on the bank. Got a fair amount that the plow pushed up behind my car eliminated, but my car won't be shoveled out today. Fatigue and sunset are setting in. So it looks like Tom gets to play chauffeur tomorrow so I can get to work.

Sabine, the silly feline, insisted on going out when I came inside. Cats don't listen. It wasn't long before she was trying to dismantle the door to get in. By the time I went to the door, she had tried to get to the window in front of the computer and was belly deep in the snow piled against the house. I encouraged her from the door (she had originally gone straight over the bank next to the house from the shoveled path), but then she decided that going the other direction was a better idea. No it wasn't, I told her, and this time she listened, and plowed through whisker high snow to get to the porch steps.

My feet are very cold and very wet.

I thought I left this weather in Wisconsin when I left 30 years ago! (Funny, I talked to my mother in Milwaukee this morning and they have very little snow.)

Linn

I've never shoveled snow. Doesn't it give you a backache or something?

it's ok, Doug...there is other stuff you get high & deep down there...*grin*...(and some of it gives ME a headache..;>))....

yep, snow is a mixed blassing...we need the moisture, and this will mely slowly, allowing ground water recharge., but WOW, it is wearying!...(and it brings out silly people who just do NOT get it...we have had 7-8 cars just barely make it to our 'corner', where the diverging streets get narrower & steeper, then get stuck and have to dif out and back up...(including a Humvee!)...why do people not realize that 8" of clearance and 18" of snow are not compatible? The street is beginning to get packed down now..(two ruts)...but the plows have not been by yet, and they will probably make it worse, as many people have dug out a little, and those banks they leave will just make everyone start over.

Here in Utica, we managed to get through this storm with only about a foot yesterday. The forecast, however had been that we'd be missed almost completely & only get 3-6 inches.

What I want to know, though is what's your total for the year? We've had 123 inches for the year. We are way ahead of Buffalo where they haven't even hit 100 yet. In Dec & Jan we had 37 straight days when we had at least a little snow & sometimes it was a lot. We had a storm last week that sent us all home. I've had 5 ft. banks at the bottom of my driveway since New Years.

It's been cold too! For the past 6 weeks, bitter. It's hanging right around 0 F. Not as cold as some, but our normal winters stay in the 20's with lots of above freezing days. We're supposed to get rain on Friday, which I dread almost more than snow. I won't have anyplace to run off to & then will be a sheet of ice.

gnu, help me! I do have ice dams on the north side & I'm seeing staining on the siding. It's 2 stories up, so I don't want to think about trying to get up there. I've been in the attic & there is plenty of ventilation-big vents at both ends. The south side looks better since there's been enough sun to get most of it off. Is the book you recommended good even if an inspector hasn't completed it for you? They list it at $60!

Whew! Just read this whole thread and I'm really exhausted. Much more so than from the shoveling sessions I did today so tenants like Brett could get out to go to work and come back to our lovely parking lot. Something like 8 inches of light stuff has fallen here in Richmond, Maine. I'm grateful that it's the light stuff but if it were the heavy stuff I would have called someone to plow it out and cheered them on from the office window. The cat gang is pissed but there are rumors of 40 degree weather later this week,

Here's a timely song to recycle:

Words by Eileen McGann ©
Adapted by Charlie Ipcar
Traditional Tune: "South Australia"

A Snow Shanty

As I awoke one frozen morn,
Heave away, haul away,
Radio said there'd been a storm,
I'll be late for work this morning.

Chorus:

Haul away, you frozen thing,
Heave away, haul away,
Haul away, now hear me sing,
I'll be late for work this morning.

There's just one thing that grieves me mind…
To leave this nice warm bed behind…(CHO)

I tried to open up the door…
Snow's piled up five feet or more…(CHO)

Kicked that door to make a gap…
Took one step, fell on me back…(CHO)

Got a shoveling job ahead…
'Cept the shovel's in the shed…(CHO)

Now to shovel out the cars…
If I can find just where they are…(CHO)

The cars are out, the driveway's clear…
What's that rumbling noise I hear? …(CHO)

That city plow goes thundering by…
Leaving snow banks ten feet high…(CHO)

The cars are buried, all hope has fled,
Heave away, haul away,
It's time I got back to me bed!
I'll be late for work this morning...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Not as bad as Charley's song. The plow bank was around five feet high. It only took two hours to get one car out, By then it was after three and I needed to get provisions. Fortunately we had enough beer, gin and scotch, only needed food. Of course I later got a call to do some work. But having to take Linn to work, and having a commitment on Thursday, I had to decline. There's a hundred dollar lost to the S.

Mark my words -- if I ever get thawed out and dug out enough and have enough energy left, I shall offer this thread a compendium of curses and expletives with regard to this bushian weather as have ever been uttered in a single post -- Tom

We're sending more liquor via our trusty giant grey tiger cat. He answers to the name of Gashay ("My Shield") but in emergencies has been known to respond to the sound of a can being openned. He has not been known to consume alcoholic beaverages, so our shipment should arrive intact. Oh, do you have a cat door?

I sing the blanket electric...
No, I don't think so.

You know, I bitch about the house falling apart and the front yard full of crabgrass, but I'm quite lucky to have neighbors with engine-driven toys.

I have a nice roaring fire going, and the smell of woodsmoke throughout the house...and the smoke. (Not that bad, but every once in a while a coal gets outside the suck zone of the chimney.) When I first went down to get wood, I found a wee dead mousie on top of the woodpile, just under the window. There was mousie crap on the sill. All I can think about was the poor little guy being trapped there, staring out at the freedom he'd never again know, until he starved to death and went 'plonk' off the sill and onto the wood. I gave him a proper burial in that place he longed to be. Big ass pile of snow on the side of the house. Maybe some other hungry creature will find the mousickle and not starve this winter. Or maybe he'll defrost and I'll step in him in the spring.

Doug:

Yeah, what you said. Man, no beer is a bad situation.

Well, the P-Vine and I walked to Weber's Store (2 1/2 miles each way) today. I took a back pack and stuffed a case of beer in it at Webers so I'm good to go.

Couple of good ol boys stopped us on the way home. They'd gotten out and asked if we wanted a ride on their tailgate back to *close* to our house and, well, ahhh, we said sure! Bad idea.
\
Might have saved us two miles of walkin' but the entire bed of the truck was filled with snow so all we had was the tailgate. Now I had a case of beer in the backpack so I only had about 10 inches of Bobert butt on the tailgate and the P-vine, well, she was scared to death. But we clawed and scratched into anything we could hold onto and them boys finally came to a stop where we had told 'em we'd have to walk in from there and the P-Vine says to the guys in the truck, "What the heck's wrong with you knotheads?"

Well, I was glad fir the ride and equally to survive the ordeal so I just made a few jokes and all was well.

The P-Vine, however, has not missed any opportunity to remind me that we could have been seriously hurt if we'd fallen off the back of the truck....

Women?

This just in from CMHC re ice removal from rooves. (I had posted earlier that calcium chloride in panty hose was a good way to create drains for ice dammed water on rooves.) Safer materials: CMA (calcium magnesium acetate), Urea, KCl (Potassium chloride), (NH4) 2SO4 (Ammonium Sulfate). Of course, obtaining these materials may not be as easy - CaCl can be found at many stores like Walmart (sp?). Homeland Security might crawl up your ass if you buy a whack of urea while driving your diesel powered vehicle.

It does my heart, and my back, and my arms, good to see him out there struggling with the snow while I stand in my bathrobe and drink my coffee in the morning.

All hail the noble landlord!

Only 3 1/2 days till I go to California! I am going to make a point of walking barefoot in the sand every afternoon!

I love snow. It's cold and ice I detest. If it would only snow warm snow on beautiful, sunny days....

I was outside telling everyone I love snow and ice, that it was wonderful out, that cold was bracing and envigorating. Some nice men came by with a big truck and gave me a ride to a nice hospital sort of place where nice people gave me nice stuff to drink and finally I got to go home. Now those nice folks come by every day and see that I'm getting nicely along. They told me that last time that they are going to "discharge" me next week, if I'm nice.

We've power several times, sometimes when I'm on Mudchat. Three times it has been between two and three in the afternoon, so we're know planning for our daily power outage.

I don't mind snow all that much. But if I have to be in a place with a lot of snow, I prefer it to be someplace where snow is so common that it's just a normal part of everyday life. That plus a good all wheel drive vehicle and a warm, snug, energy efficient home with a mudroom and a lot of natural light.

We just got back to Georgia last night from the "blizzard of the century" in the mid-Atlantic and northeast parts of the US. The amount of snow we encountered (about 30 inches in some places) wasn't all that impressive by the standards of some places I've lived. I lived for 13 years in a place that had 100 inches average yearly snowfall. But the Washington metropolitan area and Maryland's eastern shore are not at all used to that much snow, and they are ill equipped to deal with it. We had an "all wheel drive all the time" vehicle, for which I was grateful, and I have a husband from Newfoundland, for whom I was (and am) grateful. So getting around wasn't too much trouble for us.

Having said all of that, I really enjoyed getting back to here to the south where there is new green grass just starting to show, and no snow, road salt, or road cinders anywhere to be seen. (Of course, I imagine I'll be singing a different tune in August.)

Brett... enjoy the sand on your feet! It's one of the most healing things there is (in my opinion).

Just completed digging out the Bat(Goddess)mobile. I am very tired and achy. And while I am a true Yankee, New Hampshire native and all that, I am absolutely fed up the the worst winter I can recall. The cold weather and the first snow came in October. It never warmed up. Then the snow started, fairly constantly. Then a long break due to temperatures so low that even snow couldn't fall. And now this.

But, on the bright side, the sun is shining, it's 37 degrees, the house is too hot, and the only snow forecast for the next fourteen days will be quickly washed away by the freezing rain that's coming with it -- Tom

Portland has had a mid-winter thaw and I once again have a driveway instead of a skating rink. The ice damn i almost gone. The temp. was in the 40s yesterday. Today's sleet/snow is late in arriving. Hope that means all rain. I have my back door propped open so that the cats, who are suffering from cabin fever, can wander in and out. his has been a long, hard winter - just what I came to Maine for.

Irony - NYC has had a worse winter mainly because they have no place to shovel the snow. And they use garbage trucks as snow plows, adding the accumulation of street trash to the mix.

Actually, the arrival of a family of bald eagles in the pond behind my office has made this winter seem like nothing. I have stood 10' from a wild bald eagle - every day for a week. Life is good.

Now it's f#%*&#ing snowing again!!!!

I just walked home from my neighbor's up at the top of the hill and there was about 3" more on the ground than the dusting that had been there when I walked up to visit a coupla hours before. This was SUPPOSED to be rain and freezing rain, so maybe we lucked out, so to speak.

Besides being slow because of the 3+ inches of new snow and the weather turning to rain/freezing rain, there was an accident on Rte. 4 which took about an hour to get around.

Beginning to sound like sleet on the windows.

We've had a solid day of rain here in Jersey. It's cut the snow piles in half, but considering how poorly they plowed the roads ( a lane and a half in many places) and the fact it's supposed to freeze back up tommorrow night, driving will remain an interseting experience for awhile.

AAAAAARRRGGGHHHHH

This is really shaping up into one helluva' mess! All the friggin' snow, then a bit of melt, then today we spend the day out in a gawwdamn thunderstorm, with lightning.......The state is getting flooding now, especially south, and we're getting some here.......But we just got back as the freezing rain started which is already changing to snow and they figure 3" by the AM......Flurries with high winds tomorrow followed by more snow tomorrow night and then colder temps............What a mess!!!! And we didn't even get that big of a melt yet.......the floods when it does are likely to be something fierce........

Up until now, we had missed the worst of it, but I'm stuck at home tonight. We've got about 4-5" on the ground now. I figure I'll have to run the snowblower (at least on the driveway) before I turn in tonight. Probably again in the morning before I go out.

We have rain, sleet, snow, etc. What should I do about a drain pipe that has lost the two bottom pieces in the ice and is swinging in the wind? Keep in mind I will have to go out in the ice storm and wade through three feet of snow/ice to get to it. My instincts say "Wait for spring".

Sins... easiest, if you don't have anything else... duct tape it so that you have a tab of tape to screw to the wall and use a washer or make one of wood. Best is a metal strap, screwed to the wall on both sides of the downspout. At the least, remove the free piece(s) to avoid damage until it can be fixed properly.

Same stuff here this morning... snow, sleet, rain, snow, sleet, rain...

hmmmm... punch a hole near the free end, tie a rope onto it and then to a tree or whatever to stop it from beating on the house ?

hmmmm... wrap the free end with a towel and tie it tight so it won't beat up the house too bad ?

hmmmm... have another hot buttered and forget it ? Downspouts are as cheap as Turkey Turd Beer and a few scrapes can be easily touched up. Besides, wading through the crusty snow could catch you a cold or even sprain a ligament or worse. And what if noone notices you're laying in the snow, unable to claw your way back ? No sense in becoming a statistic. Caution is the better part of valour, I always say.

We'll take all the snow you can spare - I much prefer it to drought and bushfires. The temperature has been pushing up towards 40C, that's over the 100 mark for you yanks.

We had a little bit of rain last week, so at least there is a bit of green showing through the blackened landscape around here and the temperature has been cooler - only high 20s (that's 80+ for the yanks).

Tony, we had -30 below zero farenheit last night, without the wind. The wind chill was more like -60. I would take more snow if it wouldn't get below zero again. We always have a few days of below zero temperatures in the winter, and you never know what month it could hit, anytime from October to March. Too cold, but it is sunny and sky is deep blue. Wish I could just stay inside where it's warm. It's about -4 now.

Well even tho I do like snow, I've had about enough of it now too Steve. The drifts at my back door are about 4 feet high, and the banks on either side of my driveway have become cliffs so high I've no choice but to call the local plow-guy (at $20-30 a crack - only the first one was free *sniff*).

But hating snow? Hmmmmmmm ... according to this Canadian Weathernetwork story I heard last week it can be a little counter-productive:

Apparently a snow-sick Canuck got extremely frustrated with his City Council's refusal to order the plows to stop dumping their excess snow on his property. So after last week's major snowfall, he loaded the latest mountain they'd "gifted" him with onto a truck and dumped it on the Councillor's front lawn.

The Councillor got so upset at the sight of all that snow that he flew into a rage, burst out the front door and started trying to punch the guy's lights out! He now faces several criminal charges (the councillor, not the guy who dumped the snow).

At the time the story really tickled my funny-bone, but at this point I'm hoping my sense of humour will last till spring - and that's only 3 weeks away!!! (hopefully)

Cheers - daylia

You people who complain about snow and cold should thank your lucky stars! Think how much worse it would be if it weren't for global warming!

Lived in Wyoming for 20 yrs. The snow never melts there, it just blows back and forth across the prarie and wears out sometime in late June.

Spent my teen years in Minnesota and spent 20 years in Wyo. It's still a novelty to see snow fall vertically here in Colo.

I have discovered the "IT's Never Been.." syndrome. Examples: Went for a drive across Canada, visited Moose Factory Island in James Bay of Hudson's Bay, just to say I'd been there. It was a touch over 100 degrees F. Local folks said "It's never been this hot..." Came back through Maine, it was 104 F. in Presque Isle. "It's never been..." Last fall, went to visit Minn, in Oct, to see the fall colors and experience the warm autumn days of Indian summer. The fall colors were an occasional brown leaf flashing by amid the horizontal snowflakes. No wonder so many people distrust Native Americans. #rd coldest Oct on record, "It's never been..." Went to Fla in Jan. this year to get away from the cold. Folks said "It's never been this cold for this long..."

Here in Fort Worth it is more than past time to start puttin in the garden. The cold weather stuff, beans and onions, need to go in. But the weather just hasn't felt like "digging up the garden" weather. It has to be sunny, with a slight breeze, and by the time you put down the spade fork (or turn off the Rototiller) it's in the high 60s or low 70s. I'm dying to get out in the yard, but not the way it has been lately.

So, here we are, in mid March, the ugliest time of the winter. The roads are bordered by melting snowbanks in every shade of grey and black. The trash that has lain hidden under a mantle of white now appears and pollutes the landscape. Pools of muddy water form during the day and freeze into treacherous patches of ice after dark.

Now is the time when another inch of snow would improve the looks of the area and, sure enough, last night we got just that! We are so fortunate.

Okay, I found 'em in my North Carolina Wildflower book (William Justice and Ritchie Bell); "Allium Trioccum" or "Noddong Onion. Nope, never saw the plant in my life.

But it won't be long before we have "snow drops", and "tooth wart", then the wild flower show begins. I have an area in the woods where it is both shady and moist and I get thousands of "May Apples" and "Jack-in-the-Pulpits". But I also have "Shooting Star", "Twinleaf" (very rare that I found up near Maryland on the banks of the Potomac), "Dutchman's Britches", "Larksspur", "Fairy Wand", "Trillium", "Blood Root", "Spring Beauty", "Black Kohosh", "Larkspur", native "Maiden Hair Ferns".... Oh, I get excited thinking about it...

Ahh, I understand that these "ramps" is a tad smelly but 'sposed to be good, according to thre P-Vine, when cooked...

Oh yeahhhhh...

If you ever get over to Mineral County and points west around this time of year, get yourself to one of the local ramp dinners that they have at the town fire halls. Definitely worth the effort.

"Ramps" rings a bell from somewhere in my past. Where else might that term be applied to wild food?

Yeah, Sins, that was sarcasm. With luck and warm weather the snow will be gone by tax day. I've got my fingers crossed.

Yup... saw my first robin a day or so ago and we've wakened to 6mm of ice on the tree branches and snow expected this afternoon.

My daughters in Pennsylvania and Virginia were each seeing snow when I spoke with them on Sunday. Today is's snowing here in Maine. The timing is perfect. I am supposed to interview for the job on Guam this afternoon. It will be hard to keep things in perspective when they are sitting on a tropical island and I am here watching the snow fly.

For almost 2 weeks we've had temperatures in the 50s and up to the low 60s, massive melting (new seasonal swimming pool in the cellar), snow drops, lots of mud, bare knees on joggers, etcet etcet.

Woke up to snow this morning. Not a lot, just about an inch and still spitting. AND it's cold AND it's windy.

AND I no longer have a sense of humor about it.

Grrrr (weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth),
Linn
