Hi, Rick.......

Just saw a wonderful tour show by the Chieftans. They've picked up some cronies from their recent Nashville stay, added a few more guests, plus some local talent from each place they visit.

Great show, without a doubt the highlight was Matt Molloy's flute solo of "Rites of Man" - totally awesome!

I called you in on this one to ask about Jon Pilatzke, who is in the show with his brother Nathan. Absolutely great step and tap dancing, and Jon's fiddle playing is fantastic. They've apparently cleaned up all the awards in Ontario.

His Toronto-based group is called Quagmyre - no doubt you know of them. This is one of the most talented and entertaining 'strangers' I've seen in a long time.

What do you think?

Boy, how can I disagree with you? You simply wouldn't believe how many amazing young musicians are coming out of Toronto at this moment. Bluegrass, Old time, Irish instrumental, much much much original music by kids who've really to listened and absorbed.

Cheers Tiger

Rick

I saw Bill Monroe a thousand years ago, and little four year old Ricky Scaggs stood on an orange crate, and played (in turn) all the instruments....yes, including the bass. I thought "wow" it must be in the Southern air.

Well there's somethin' in the Toronto air as well...and a LOT of other places. These kids can flat out PLAY!

Cheers

I'm still shocked as to what 19 year old Marc Roy played on guitar on our banjo CD. We kept his second takes. His first takes were evidently just as awesome. This kid is just as good on fiddle and mandolin too.
Yikes!

Arnie,

I've seen Marc a few times with Crazy Strings. He is something else. The rest of the band is pretty darned impressive too. Chris Quinn floors me.

You must have a better memory than Ricky Skaggs. Ricky thinks he was six when he was called out of the audience in Lexington, Kentucky to play one song with Bill Monroe. By the way, that particular Monroe show happened in Lexington, Kentucky in 1960. It was a one shot deal and Ricky did not play with Monroe again until he was a teenager.

I didn't know that you were even going to bluegrass shows in Kentucky in 1960.

Guest, I think you'll find the 1960 (actually 1961) event was the Flatt & Scruggs TV show. The concert in KY was in 1959.

Ricky says that he played a song with Monroe when he was six. Since he was born in July 1954, I assumed it was 1960, although it could have been in the first half of 1961. In 1959, Ricky would have been four and five years old. I take him at his word that he was six, thus 1960 or 1961.

As for the TV show with Flatt and Scruggs, Ricky says he was seven at the time. That would make it 1961 or 1962.

I got the 1959 date from Music Central and a few other websites. RS's website says he was 6 but gives no date. Pedantia anywho - he was a little kid who could play the hell out of a mandolin. Thing is, talent inspires talent, and where there's one kid prodigy, more are apt to spring up. At least that's what I think. From what I've seen when I've been to Toronto, there's one healthy 'music scene' there.
