Hi, friends of Mudcat!

These are the lyrics of "Is it real", a song of Bert Jansch.
I found it in the net, but I think are not complete and/or wrong lyrics.
Please, could you correct and complete it?

Thanks a lot!

Is it real
It's not the stage show that I want from you
It's not the glitter nor the bright lights too
And I want to know from you to right
Is it real?

You fill any haed with words and clever songs
You sing are through you are never wrong
And I want to know from you to right
Is it real?

You live as though life were a Pinter play
With a happy ending you can explain away
But all I want to know from you tonight
Is it real?

Do you work and play 1ike normal people do?
Do you love completely, let your heart ring true?
And if you break your own heart, would you ask
Is it real?
Is it real?
Is it real?

I found some sound samples at Yahoo! Music. This is what I hear for the second verse:

You fill my head with words and clever songs.
You drifted off as though you're never wrong.
And all I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

You fill any haed with words and clever songs
You sing are through you are never wrong
And I want to know from you to right
Is it real?

the first line is "you fill my head with the words from clever songs"
and i think the second is "as though" as opposed to "are through"

unfortunately i don't have the recording handy but as far as I remember the rest is right.

enjoy singing jansch!

Here's how I think I hear it. The bridge doesn't make sense to me grammatically, so I think I must have some words wrong, but I don't know which ones!

IS IT REAL?
As sung by a female voice unknown to me on Bert Jansch's album "Dazzling Stranger" (2000)

1. It's not the stage show that I want from you.
It's not the glitter nor the bright lights too.
All I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

2. You fill my head with words and clever songs.
You drifted off as though you're never wrong,
And all I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

BRIDGE: Who lets you sit and figure out
Have the right to fill my head with dreams
If not of things ringin' out from your guitar
Did you think that life's not always what it seems?

REPEAT BRIDGE

3. You live as though life were a Pinter play
With a happy ending you can explain away,
But all I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

4. Do you work to live like normal people do?
Do you love completely, let your heart run true?
And if you broke your own heart, would you ask:
Is it real?
Is it real? [REPEAT AND FADE]

This should be correct:

IS IT REAL?

1. It's not the stage show that I want from you.
It's not the glitter nor the bright lights too.
All I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

2. You fill my head with words and clever songs.
You drift along as though you're never wrong,
And all I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

BRIDGE: Who on earth do you sit and think you are?
Got the right to fill my head with dreams?
And melodys ringin' out from your guitar.
Don't you think that life's not always what it seems?

REPEAT BRIDGE

3. You live as though life were a Pinter play,
With a happy ending you can explain away.
But all I want to know from you tonight:
Is it real?

4. Have you worked and lived like normal people do?
Have you loved completely, let your heart ring true?
And if you broke your own heart, would you ask:
Is it real?
Is it real?

(Bert Jansch)

So, as an aside, who do we suppose this was directed at?

David E.

The female voice belongs to Helen McGurk who, with James Devlin, oruginally recorded the song for "People on the Highway - A Bert Jansch Encomium". The two-cd album is dated 2000, released by Market Square Music Ltd. It contains recordings of twenty-six of Bert's songs and instrumentals, each performed by different artists as a tribute to Bert.

"Is It Real" was released on "Heartbreak" (Logo GOL 1035) in 1982. There are two copies available on Amazon here.

I posted this thread 9 years ago.
Thanks to Jim, David and Pete for the lyrics and for the discography.
I think Bert will be happy, above over the clouds, to see we are here writing about his songs.
