Subject: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks - kids From: Sam L Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:01 AM Help, I'm a little blocked, and rushed to have a handful of tunes that can support limericks a 3rd grade class has written, for improvised singing. Helps if they're tunes the kids might know. I've only thought of Amazing Grace, the Gilligan's Island theme, Help me Rhonda, and a few others I can't recall momentarily. Oh-plasir d'amour. They can squish in a limerick. Also ...Of all the horses in the merry green wood--but I don't know what that's titled. The only kid-ish limerick I know is What a wonderful bird is the pelican/his beak can hold more than his belly can/ he can hold in his beak/ enough food for a week/ and I wonder just how in the hell he can. It might help to know a few that can get past the censor. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Mark Clark Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:38 AM Aren't limericks traditionally sung to the melody of “Celito Lindo?” That's the melody one commonly hears for limericks. There are several versions of the chorus but a comon one goes: Aye yi yi yi,As I recall there is a lot of discussion of limericks in these threads. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: wysiwyg Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:42 AM Uncle Dave Macon's "Around Nashville" works for a lot of limericks, and has a nice little dramatic pause possible before offering the last line (punchline). ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Amos Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:52 AM There once was a lady from Niger Who smiled as she rode on a TIGER! They returned from the ride With the lady inside And the smile on the face of the tiger. A straight G-C-D7 talking blues will serve lacking anything better. A |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: GUEST Date: 29 Apr 03 - 06:47 PM "Cielito Lindo" (the chorus) tags the limerick, but doesn't supply the tune. I can sing the tune, but not place it: In 3/4: G G D7 (D7) D7 D7 G (G) C C G G D7 D7 G (G) Parentheses are vocal rest measures. On another tack, have you noticed that a vast majority of Emily Dickinson's poems fit "The Yellow Rose of Texas"? Once you learn something like that, you can't forget it. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: masato sakurai Date: 29 Apr 03 - 11:47 PM Some limericks are sung on Totally Lewd Limericks (Warner Audio Publishing; ISBN 0-913675-61-X) [casette], with this warning: "This casette contains material which some listeners may find offensive and is not suitable for children" (underline mine). ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 30 Apr 03 - 04:43 AM Any limerick can also be fit in and sung to the tune of "North Atlantic Squadron". Don't tell the kids what the tune is, and see if you get any response from the grownups. And act innocent. :-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Sam L Date: 30 Apr 03 - 09:26 AM Thanks, I'll try to pick through. I'm hoping to have enough that I can pick one that suits the particular limerick. Yes, I do a bit of playing innocent. this wobbled away from the limerick form I wonder what it's like to be a turtle, too no need for a house, just his shirt'll do never wears pants, and he never runs, he looks like a baby, wearing a one-sie be careful, if he's a snapping turtle it'll probably hurt a little |
Subject: Tune Add: Tune for limericks (ABC+) From: Mark Clark Date: 30 Apr 03 - 02:24 PM Here is the ABC+ code for the tune I've most often heard used for limericks. I use abcm2ps so this encoding may require that program from the ABC Plus project. If you don't already have them, you'll also want Ghostscript, a free PostScript engine, and GSView, a free viewer/print program that will also produce PDF (Adobe Acrobat) files for sharing with friends. Alternatively, the coding may be very close to the original ABC specification so you might try it with older software and see if it works. It may only require minimal editing. There is a melody only ABC file included as part of the MIDI to text conversion below. - Mark

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Lanfranc Date: 01 May 03 - 07:13 AM The tune to "Poverty Knock" works well - the song is in Limerick metre! Alan |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Charley Noble Date: 01 May 03 - 08:55 AM Tunes? I don't need no XXXXing tunes! I just play my banjo. There was a young widow named Brice, Who kept her dead husband on ice; She said, "T'was hard when I lost him, I'll never defrost him; It's rather cold comfort but nice." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Mark Cohen Date: 01 May 03 - 11:48 PM Here's one I wrote in college...and it's musical, too. A musician was young Friedrich Nietzsche But his violin sounded quite scrietzsche His father said, "Fred, Take up writing instead-- The silence will be ginger-pietzsche!" Aloha, Mark (Apologies to Wolfgang for the [intentional but still incorrect] mispronunciation!) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Tunes for limericks From: Wolfgang Date: 05 May 03 - 10:53 AM A long forgotten German duo, Schobert und Black, sung limericks to a couple of different tunes. If you can get hold of one of their (out of print) recordings you have some useable tunes. Wolfgang |
