Subject: Songs that you can do things to... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 May 03 - 10:43 AM Not sure what handle to give this or if it sould be BS or Music but here goes... Another thread I started got me thinking about songs which can be converted into deeds! Being inclined toward the great outdoors and from the self same city the Manchester Rambler comes to mind - You can walk to all the places mentioned. The original I posted was about walking the route in Bob Pegg's 'The Gypsy'. Two possible walks there. What other songs can be 'done' though? Must be some railway and canal ones. What about long distance journeys using modern transport? Or not journeys at all but stories of other feats? I guess it would be too much to mention the more, shall we say, exotic songs but you never know with this place...;-) Cheers Dave the Gnome (Can you tell I'm bored at the moment?) |

Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 May 03 - 11:06 AM Funny you should mention Route 66 Wesley. My Cousin lives just off 66 in Illinois and knows a fair old bit about the historic route. Mrs G and I plan to fly to Chicago some time meet Cousin Tony and his wife, Sue, there and do as much of California bound 66 as we can in a couple of weeks! I'd almost forgoten the song! Thanks for the reminder:-) DtG |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Schantieman Date: 21 May 03 - 11:07 AM I travelled on a Greyhound bus from New York to Los Angeles, largely on Route 66, in 1978. Those were the days. S |

Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Mrs.Duck Date: 21 May 03 - 12:37 PM Slight deviation here. Geoff and I were recently discussing route 66 and decided that as an alternative it would 'just be great on the A38' and plan to 'do' the A38 as a holiday in the caravan choosing sites near the road. Now all we need is someone to write the song. |

Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Ed. Date: 21 May 03 - 02:06 PM He did one called A38 too Are you sure about that, alanabit? A search of his site and the web in general find no mention of such a song. |

Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: GUEST,Midchuck, downstairs Date: 21 May 03 - 02:58 PM One time a few years ago I was driving, alone, west on I-80 across the dry western part of Nebraska. Happened to be listening to Michael Martin Murphey, singing "Cole Younger." Right after he sang: Out on the Nebraska prairie, the Denver train came along. Says I to Bob, 'let's rob her, as she goes rolling on'... I came over a rise and saw a long freight train off in the distance to one side, also heading west. Gave me a strange feeling for a moment. I didn't rob it, though. Peter. |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 May 03 - 03:10 PM But I didn't wear my wellies and I did get pleurisy. Some of Adge Cutlers' songs are 'do-able'... I've done the Chew Magna Cha cha cha, and I've participated in at least 3 verses of Twice Daily..... Shanties eh? Not the one about the good ship Araldite I trust? LTS |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Gareth Date: 21 May 03 - 03:35 PM Perish the thought that this thread should get into the hands of the Aberflyhalf Rugby Club. The thought of "If I Sir was the marrying kind," being sung with actions ??? Not a pretty thought. And the thought of that well known ship, the Venus - ooooh! woords fail me !!!! Gareth |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 May 03 - 04:59 PM Just remembered Stan Rogers' 'North West Passage' song. Is that what it is called? One more? last? time I will take the North West Passage and seek the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea... Something like that. Isn't it about a train Journey across Canada? And Barrats Privateers does one hell of a sea route doesn't it? Hmmm. Looks like I may have enough Holiday ideas to last a few years at least;-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Frankham Date: 21 May 03 - 08:21 PM Kid's songs. Preschoolers. We wrote some by getting down on the floor and rolling rubber balls, turning around on our butts, waving our hands up and down, clapping and patting our bodies....... Little kids love songs they can move to. So do I. Frank Hamilton |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Mudlark Date: 21 May 03 - 11:42 PM "sea shanties are great songs to make love to....." What, like Hey way and up he rises? There is an old song about the Big Sur area that might be fun to track down...south coast the wild coast is lonely...something like that. And lots of train songs you could follow, from Wabash Cannonball to City of NO (coming down from Kankakee...always wondered where that was...) From the Red River Valley you are leaving...course you'd have to get there first. As We Marched Down to Fennario...I'm Alabama Bound... |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Cluin Date: 22 May 03 - 01:28 AM Making love to Mary Ellen Carter: "She went down last October...." (has it been that long?) "And the groan she gave as she went down..." (well, I've heard of a hummer, but...) "Rise again! Rise Again!" (more Viagra please?) "Three dives a day in a hard hat suit and twice I've had the bends..." (But I like to do it `cause I loves ya, baby! Just let me catch my breath and I'll growl at the badger once more before I sleep) |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 22 May 03 - 04:13 AM You could try putting your chewing gum on the bedpost overnight and checking the flavour next morning, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could also jump up and down and turn around while picking a bale of cotton but you'd just wear yourself out! You could take this hammer to the Captain, but he might tell you to put it where the sun don't shine. RtS ("Somebody stop me") |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: GUEST,Jim Dixon Date: 22 May 03 - 02:00 PM "...and I called my farm 'Muscle in My Arm' ...and I called my shack 'Break My Back'..." I suppose it would be easy enough going around giving goofy names to everything you own. "...and I called my PC 'AC/DC' ...and I called my mouse 'You Dirty Louse' ...and I called my car 'Sammy's Bar'...etc." |
Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: gnomad Date: 22 May 03 - 02:20 PM Another couple for you: 1) Do "The Manch", I don't think there are still 28 pubs, but even what is left would be a formidable challenge. 2) The Day Return to Hemsby (Kippers) has distinct possibilities. I'd steer clear of Sir Patrick Spens. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ONE PIECE AT A TIME (from Johnny Cash) From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 23 May 03 - 10:05 AM Try doing this:
ONE PIECE AT A TIME CHORUS SPOKEN: Uh, yeah, Red Rider, this is the Cottonmouth an’ Psycho-Billy Cadillac. Come on. – Haw? – This is the Cottonmouth and negatory on the cost o’ this mo-chine there, Red Rider. You might say I went right up to the factory and picked it up; it’s cheaper that way. – What model is it?
SUNG: Well, it’s a ‘49, ‘50, ‘51, ‘52, [Note: the tune of the last "verse" resembles the tune of THE AUCTIONEER.] |

Subject: RE: Songs that you can do things to... From: GUEST,LadyJean Date: 28 May 03 - 12:16 AM I thought you were talking about songs that could be parodied. I like showtunes best for that, though I have a nice parody of "Cindy" about s.u.v.s . If you like, I suppose we could "take a walk, just a little walk, down beside where the waters flow, down by the banks of the Ohio." It's headwaters aren't far from my home. But I'd just as soon you didn't stab me. Just as an aside, the French called the Ohio La Belle Riviere, the beautiful river. I won't argue. |
