Not sure what handle to give this or if it sould be BS or Music but here goes...

Another thread I started got me thinking about songs which can be converted into deeds! Being inclined toward the great outdoors and from the self same city the Manchester Rambler comes to mind - You can walk to all the places mentioned. The original I posted was about walking the route in Bob Pegg's 'The Gypsy'. Two possible walks there.

What other songs can be 'done' though? Must be some railway and canal ones. What about long distance journeys using modern transport? Or not journeys at all but stories of other feats? I guess it would be too much to mention the more, shall we say, exotic songs but you never know with this place...;-)

Funny you should mention Route 66 Wesley. My Cousin lives just off 66 in Illinois and knows a fair old bit about the historic route. Mrs G and I plan to fly to Chicago some time meet Cousin Tony and his wife, Sue, there and do as much of California bound 66 as we can in a couple of weeks! I'd almost forgoten the song!

Slight deviation here. Geoff and I were recently discussing route 66 and decided that as an alternative it would 'just be great on the A38' and plan to 'do' the A38 as a holiday in the caravan choosing sites near the road. Now all we need is someone to write the song.

One time a few years ago I was driving, alone, west on I-80 across the dry western part of Nebraska. Happened to be listening to Michael Martin Murphey, singing "Cole Younger."

Right after he sang:

I came over a rise and saw a long freight train off in the distance to one side, also heading west. Gave me a strange feeling for a moment.

Just remembered Stan Rogers' 'North West Passage' song. Is that what it is called? One more? last? time I will take the North West Passage and seek the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea... Something like that. Isn't it about a train Journey across Canada? And Barrats Privateers does one hell of a sea route doesn't it? Hmmm. Looks like I may have enough Holiday ideas to last a few years at least;-)

There is an old song about the Big Sur area that might be fun to track down...south coast the wild coast is lonely...something like that.

And lots of train songs you could follow, from Wabash Cannonball to City of NO (coming down from Kankakee...always wondered where that was...)

I thought you were talking about songs that could be parodied. I like showtunes best for that, though I have a nice parody of "Cindy" about s.u.v.s .
If you like, I suppose we could "take a walk, just a little walk, down beside where the waters flow, down by the banks of the Ohio." It's headwaters aren't far from my home. But I'd just as soon you didn't stab me.
Just as an aside, the French called the Ohio La Belle Riviere, the beautiful river. I won't argue.
