Ello, folks. My trusty Yamaha, needs re-fretting very badly. The frets are worn through almost up to fret 6, and some of the others up to 8/9 are a bit worn.

Do I;

Do it my self? -not done it before

Get a pro to do it

If so what sort of price am I looking at?

How do I know the "pro" is any good and won't make a mess of it?

What should i look for, if I get it done to make sure it's as good as new?

Thankee

Eric,

I would suggest having a pro do it. I just had my Santa Cruz model H done (re-crowning, not completely re-fretting it). It cost me about $80.00. I had it done at a music store where the owner also is an authorized martin repair person and has another good repair guy that does all sorts of things in an amazingly fast amount of time. If you lived around Chicago I would tell you to take it to him.

Some Yammies are hard to do because the binding covers the fret ends.

hi eric, as phil says above. if you lov your yammy, dont do it your self, you will almost cirtainly balls it up. i could do it, but better still i know a man (who taught me!) in hull. its weather or not he has the time to do it though. i could always give him a call on your behalf. john.

All Good advice. Get a professional to do the job. enquire around you will find someone with experience. I have made repairs for a number of years. refretting requires skill and experience to achieve a quality job.

If you do decide to tackle it yourself, make sure you heat the frets thoroughly before removing them.

It's not rocket science, if you are manually dexterous, have the right tools and take your time you will do a satisfactory job. Get hold of Dan Erlewine's book on guitar repair, and check out the MIMF site as well.

Of course, it may well be less hassle simply to hand it into a repair shop ...

Dear Eric,

I know you could do it but the binding on your fretboard makes it a little trickier than an unbound refret. There are a couple of tricks to it and you may need a couple of special tools like a fret puller (I made mine) and fret files as well as fretwire of the correct guage and profile. I would say overall save yourself the stress (unless you fancy the challenge!) and have a professional luthier/repairer do it!

You know Terry already and John Le Voi, West Street, Alford, Lincs, LN13 9EZ is a good luthier and repairer and might be within striking distance. (Tel: 01507 463341)

All the best,

Richard

Hello all.

I was just fishing for best advice, the worst would have been "it's easy, do it yourself".There is a binding on the fretboard which would make it difficult for a non-expert like myself.

Richard, thanks for the address of John Le Voi. I don't know if you managed to get hold of Terry about your problem.

Guest(2),thankyou for stating the obvious. If I had wanted to do it myself (confidently) then I wouldn't have asked.

Harpmaker and John9-I can guess,, thankyou, and if you could ask how much for a refret to 12th fret, I would be gratefull, as there is no problem getting to Hull9.

Thankee all.
