Subject: Stan Rogers Remembered on WFDU and ??
From: WFDU - Ron Olesko
Date: 26 May 03 - 10:30 PM

This Sunday, June 1 from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time, I will host a documentary/retrospective on Stan Rogers. Stan died on June 2, 1983 and we thought it was fitting to put together this special. We will include excerpts from two programs that Stan recorded at our studio back in 1982. Stan visited with Shirley Keller for her program "The Folk People". Shirley no longer hosts a show, but she graciously lent me the tapes to include in this special.

In addition, we will hear memories from his widow Ariel, his producer/musician/friend Paul Mills and musician/friend Grit Laskin. In addition, Garnet Rogers has shared his thoughts as well for this program.

While the program will be a documentary, we will feature a wealth of music from Stan - full songs, not just snippets. The primary focus will be on Stans music.

You can listen in through our website at www.wfdu.fm.

I'm also hoping that other radio shows around the country - scratch that - around the world, will also remember Stan during this anniversary period. Please write to your local folk DJ and ask them to play a song or two and remember Stan.   If they do, please tell them to send me a note at wfdutraditions@aol.com. I am preparing a list that I will present to Ariel along with a copy of my show.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I do hope you will join us on WFDU-FM this Sunday (89.1 in the NYC area or on the internet at www.wfdu.fm) and PLEASE, remind your local folk DJ and see if they will take a few minutes to share a song.

I don't doubt its importance, but emotionally I have no desire to revisit the most awful and traumatic day in the history of Canadian folk music. It isn't the airplane fire that we want to remember him for, is it?

I'm sure it will be a great show. I just think it would have been better to put it on, maybe for his birthday, or better yet, on the anniversary of the release date of "Songs From Fogarty's Cove". That's a date I'd want to celebrate. Stan's clear sense of direction and purpose, combined with talent and hard work, gave a huge boost to a music scene that was losing ground at that time.

Hope the show goes well, anyway.

I wish I could somehow record it off the computer. That is the date and time for my going away party at Charley Noble's house. I leave for Guam the following weekend.

That's the down side. The up side is that I intend to visit Australia while in that hemisphere so Sandra should be on the lookout.

Bill,

I do agree with your first paragraph. I too do not care for using days of tragedy as a rememberance. Unless it is a signifcant annivesary date, I choose to celebrate birthdays instead. However, tradition and culture have shown a tendancy to use "date of death" as a memorial. The church even uses the day of a Saints death in its commemoration. (St. Patrick died on March 17.)

I feel that people will be thinking about Stan around the time of this anniversary. I chose to do this special and ask for other stations to remember Stan because I don't want people to dwell on the death aspect, but to offer something that will remind people on why Stan was so important and the power of his writing.

We will remember our sorrow, but my intent is not to dwell on this issue but rather to celebrate the music and what Stan meant to folk music. I deal with the death at the beginning of the show and present it as a piece of the story, then move into his story and music. This is not going to be a VH-1 Behind the Music tabloid piece. Stans story has a beginning and an end AND a legacy that continues.

While none of us wish to remember the tragedy, I do think there is another reason to use this as a starting point. Stan and the other passengers who perished on June 2 might have had a better chance if smoke hoods were available.   The debate over this still continues 20 years later. If there is any good out of remembering this date, perhaps this is one.

Ron

About five miles from my home the Strait of Canso opens into Chedabucto Bay. On this body of water Stan's spirit still floats.
The celebration is not of his death, but that his musical spirit has continued to grow for twenty years and will do so for many more.

I still remember watching the accident on the TV news; but I had not heard of Stan then, or any of his music. Years later, I was introduced to, and fell in love with, both his music and his voice. With the anniversary approaching, I asked for next Monday, singers night at the Herga folk club in London, to be used to remember the man and his music. I am furiously learning "Aboard the Nancy", while my wife is learning "Lies"; others I know plan to sing "Last watch on the Midland", "Lock keeper", "Barrat's Privateers", "Mary Ellen Carter" etc...But in addition, driven by the irony of my "not knowing what I was losing when I lost it", I also wrote a song in his memory, for all of those-us who have never met the man but are living proof that his memory, and his influence, go on. I gave the song to Dan McKinnon, who will pass it on to Stan's mum in good time (but not around the anniversary, for reasons of sensitivity). Meanwhile, here are the lyrics; it's just "Stan through my eyes" but perhaps you'll find something common there...

I WISH I COULD HAVE MET YOU
(for Stan Rogers)
George Papavgeris, April 2003

They say you were a big man, Stan,
They say that you could shade the sun
Just standing there a solid six foot four;
And when it was your turn to sing
The windowpanes they say would ring
As your voice seemed to rise up through the floor.
If every thing about you was just half of what they say
It would have been enough to turn me green.
Yet I didn't know the treasure that was lost that summer's day
As I watched your death upon a TV screen.

(chorus)
    And I wish I could have met you
    And I wish I'd known you well
    For your songs are ringing in my ears
    As clear as any bell;
    But every time we reach out
    In chorus or refrain,
    Like the Mary Ellen Carter
    In our hearts you rise again.

Proud child of the Maritimes
The people you'd recall and times
When living could be earned with honest toil;
And passionately sang of those
Who through the centuries opposed
The forces that would raid your native soil.
Ten thousand miles away from you and twenty years too late
Your messages did reach me loud and clear;
Though little of your world I knew, your passion was so great
That I'm not ashamed to say I shed a tear.

(chorus)

The world you spoke of gone is now
The times have changed and still somehow
The words you wrote now even more apply.
I am not family or friend;
This song I don't know where to send.
Perhaps you'll hear if I sing to the sky.
And one thing I can promise is we never will forget
The giant with the voice that hearts could fill.
The power of your songs will always catch souls in the net
And through the songs the man is living still.

(chorus)

No, he's not forgotten. Any day of the year. For many years to come.

Proud child of the Maritimes

Stan's parents were children of the Maritimes.

Stan was born, raised, and lived his entire life, in Ontario.

Stan grew up near Hamilton, Ontario.   His family was from the Maritimes and they spent a lot of time visiting there.

A smoke hood is a device that you put over your head - a large mask which looks like a large bag that you put over your head. The mask contains filters that will filter out the toxins in the smoke, giving the user additional time to evacuate.

The FAA contends that precious time would be wasted in putting on the mask which will result in further loss of life. The proponents of the hood say that the airline industry does not want to pay the additional expense.   Many corporate aircrafts have been outfitted with the hoods.

The home of Stan's heart was in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia along the shore of Chedabucto Bay. He is regarded here as one of our own! This was his roots!

Ah, he's developed a little root in a Greek heart too, though...It's OK, I won't claim him. GUEST, I confess to a little poetic licence re the "Maritimes" but on the other hand, I would still say his origins were from there, even if he was not born there (easier to rhyme than Ontario in any case). But anyway, no offence meant to anyone.

But of course we can also all "claim" him in a sense - to paraphrase a line from a song:

"For when you love a song so much, it is as if you own it;
Not with your purse, but rather with your voice and your heart"

The fact that Stan was from a Maritime family who moved to Ontario makes him pretty much typical of our generation, myself included. His lyric chronicles of that upheaval--do I really have to name the songs?--are, I would argue, his most important cultural legacy.
I'll name some anyway:
  • Free in the Harbour
  • Make and Break Harbour
  • The Idiot
  • Rawdon Hills

His influence on later songwriters such as James Keelaghan, Garnet Rogers and many more, is also significant. He showed us how to write about Canada.

my local spies (JennyO & Hrothgar) tell me that the concert will start long before the sparrows & finish about brekkie time, & as I have a brekkie date with friends, I can't see myself logging on at that unearthly hour before rushingoff to breakfast. I guess I'll survive, but I'll suggest a Stan Rogers song or 2 on Fri at our singing session.

Like others I found his work long after his death - I only discovered folk was still alive around 7 years ago - & love his work. I recently bought Fogerty's Cove & Live in Halifax & will get the other CDs sometime soon.

George, I like the song as I "know" a lot of singers like that - folks I missed & now can only know through their music & other people's memories.

Naemanson - looking froward to meeting you. Keep in touch.

Have you any idea what time the concert will be on translated to Sydney time?   I would even get up before the birds to hear it if I knew the exact time to do this. I only discovered Stan about 23 years ago through a folkie friend who used to sing all Stan's songs and in particular, The Northwest Passage.

Bravo ! Many documentaries end up being an "interpretation" rather than allowing the audience to really listen.

Patricia - if you are referring to my show, it is not a concert but rather a 3 hour documentary. You can go to our website at www.wfdu.fm.   About half way down on our home page is link to a world clock. The show will air on Sunday June 1 from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time (WFDU is located in the NYC area).

I have had one "tragedy" during the editing of this piece. A colleague of mine did an interview with Garnet, one of the only ones that he granted permission to at this time, but unfortunately the tape has some severe audio problems.   There is a huge hum and a cyclical popping that runs throughout the interview - pretty much overpowering what Garnet had to say.   I am trying to do some restoration to save at least one snippet of it - his very eloquent discussion of the events that have taken place since Stans passing. In the worst case, I will summarize his thoughts and read quotes during the final hour.

Again, the focus will be on the music. This won't be a tabloid piece and I do not intend to add any more "larger than life" stories to his tale but I do think the program gives insight to how he progessed. The music tells the tale.

I am assuming that Eastern Time is the same as Mudcat time (someone let me know if I am wrong).

If it is, then it will be on here in Sydney at 5am Monday morning. Bit early for me, I'm afraid, unless I stay up and don't go to bed the night before, which would be more my style than getting up really early!

A word on Smoke Hoods.........It would be a wonderful legacy for those hundreds who have perished aboard airliners like Stan Rogers. It is no secret but hugely downplayed by the FAA that hoods would save and could have saved lives. The reasoning of those within the airline industry and the FAA who claim that the time factor is a problem can only be labeled spurious at best. Putting on a Smoke Hood is like putting a paper bag over your head and requires only seconds to accomplish.

Expense of the device and the negative impression supposedly that passengers will associate with instruction on it's use are the real reason and shows once again how the FAA prefers to fulfill it's secondary mission of promoting airline travel instead of it's primary mission of assuring safety.

Thank you so much for the kind comments. I am really glad that people enjoyed the special. It is really gratifying to receive such comments. More rewarding then the big bucks... at least that is what I tell myself!!

Spaw, I am sort of in the middle of the debate on smoke hoods.   In producing the special I read quite a bit about them, and I also read the final report on the actual fire that took Stans life.

One good thing that came out of the fire is that Air Canada made strict regulations on the type of material that can be used in the plane.   Most of the toxins that actually took the lives that day came from foam insulation in the seating as well as other parts of the plane. Air Canada has mandated that non-flammable material be used as well as tightened controls on some of what materials are used in the construction of cabins.

My initial reaction was the same as yours - it seems like a no-brainer to install smoke hoods, the only factor is money.   However, in further reading I have not found any convincing arguements that smoke hoods have actually saved lives.   Many corporate jets have installed them, but I haven't found any cases where they worked.   I can understand that it might give a fall sense of security and actually blur vision.   Considering that smoke is already making the egress difficult, the task of putting a bag over your head and attempting to find the exit would add to the considerable stress and panic that is already taking place.   The few precious seconds that a person may have to escape could indeed be hindered - the gains that a smoke hood could provide may be negligable.   I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I do think that the issue needs to be re-examined.

Again, my thanks to everyone who took the time to listen and share their comments. It is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ron Olesko

I only discovered Stan's work in Nov '03, through picking up a tape of "From Fresh Water" in a Tucson used music shop. I was a folkie in the 60s- early 70s. (Ian & Sylvia, Chad Mitchell Trio, Dave Van Ronk, Tom Rush, Doc Watson, etc).

I listened to the tape in the car on the drive back to LA, and I was blown away by Stan Rogers' voice and his songwriting. I've since bought CD's of all of his material. Of all the folk artists I have ever heard, he stands alone. When I think of the richness of the body of work he would have produced had he lived, it's just .... there are no words.

On smoke hoods, I have one. I read about them a few years ago and other common contexts in which they are discussed is in cruise ships and high-rise hotels. I recall the tragic MGM hotel fire in Vegas many years ago. I got it for when I travel on vacation or on business. It's in a red and green plastic container the size of a Coke can. Called "EVAC-U8", it's made in Vancouver by Brookdale. It's their core product. Frankly, I think luggage stores should sell them. When someone buys luggage they're virtually certain to be flying and perhaps staying in hotels. They should just leave the canister in the suitcase permanently so they never forget and leave it at home when they're packing for a trip.

People need to be proactive. Deaths will continue to happen to people waiting for the FAA, the hotel industry or the cruise industry to furnish smoke hoods. Even IF they agreed it was a good idea, the theft problem would be totally out of hand. It's really something that people need to do for themselves. Like keeping a collapsible umbrella in the briefcase or the car, or women carrying a rape whistle.
