I recently heard mention of "Tartan Day". Apparently this is celebrated in New York, but I was wondering if it was celebrated anywhere else, and what it is !

I heard of it a few weeks ago here in AZ for the first time. As I remember it was mentioned as just a good excuse (not that any was required) for a get-together of Scots in order to enjoy good Scottish music, dance and drinks. It may be of quite recent origin... perhaps thought up by Scots who felt envious of the popularity of St. Patrick's Day for the Irish. If anyone knows any more about Tartan Day, please post. Is it celebrated in Scotland? I have a friend, Reiver 1, of Scots ancestry (but born a Liverpudlian and now living in Canada) who, when I wished him a "Happy Tartan Day," said he'd never heard of it. (He was glad to join me in celebrating it, nevertheless.)

April 6 - Recognized by an Act of Congress in the States and by Parliament in Canada. It is designated as a day to recognize the contributions of Scots and their descendents in the development of those respective countries.

The date was selected as it is the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 - where a group of Scottish nobles and gentry essentially told King Edward (of England) to go bugger himself - that they fought not for wealth or status but for the freedom of Scotland.

There are parades and events in many places around the US and Canada.

I refuse to wear a tartan though... I had a tartan pinafore when I was young, and it was the scratchiest garment I've ever worn (well, except for that PVC and goat hair jobby that Skippy likes so much.....).

Well, alright, but only if it's that nice bile yellow one with the Barbie pink stripe.

I would love to celebrate it, but the only tartan I have is a picnic rug, and April 6 might be a touch early.
