Subject: HELP: mono to dual track
From: GUEST,Gene
Date: 26 Aug 03 - 04:55 PM

Recently dug out an old Reel-To-Reel tape that was apparently
recorded on 2 track recorder...my unit is 4 track ...
and i get a perfect audio/track on the right channel but
and the reverse sounds of the oposite track of the RTR
on the left channel...[the other channel is of course being
played backwards]

my audio program provides for ZERO'ing out the Left channel
but i see no way to MIRROR the RIGHT track so there will
be sound in both Speakers?

any suggestions...???

In the future
I suppose i could just couple the output of the desired
channel thru a MONO to STEREO CABLE???

I have already recorded one RTR side onto the HD

" i see no way to MIRROR the RIGHT track"

Well, I use cooledit and I'd select the entire right track, "copy" it, and then paste it onto the blank left track...

That's sorta the grunt way to do it... I think CoolEdit will copy left to right (or right to left) with one click...

Thanks:

I solved future transfers from RTR to HD...using a
2 to 1 combiner patch cord

and Dale suggested via Email that SOUND FORGE could
duplicate a single track to 2 tracks

Most programs which will do editing of Wave files can do that. Cool Edit ('96 if you can find it) is one of them. I've got three or four of them. Gold Wave is another. I've posted this in other threads. They have TONS of downloads for MUSIC at Hitsquad Music programs for Windows

Does your audio program provide a stereo > mono conversion?
If so, zero out the 'backwards' (which btw should be the right) channel and convert the rest to be a mono sound file - the original two track recording is mono anyway.

And further, if your fourtracker has a switch to mute the 'backwards' ch, you could do the recording onto the pc in mono mode in the first place, provided your software gives that choice. Or you could simply connect the 'correct' track only.

I'd prefer keeping a mono recording as it is, because duplicating it to "stereo" (two similar tracks) does not enhance the sound at all, on the contrary in many cases.
