I know of this as a Sweedish song

There are Sweedish lyrics, but I don't think I'd better even try, as my memory of 'em is about twenty years old, and Sweedish was never my language.

Even I thought it was a from Sweden, but in my old songbook I find it was a song from The Aaland islands. The laungage in The Aaland islands is Swedish but the islands not depend to Sweden.

'Vem kan segla' is probably the most well-known folksong of Åland (Ahvenanmaa in Finnish), which is an autonomous province in the south-western archipelago of Finland, consisting of about 6500 islands of which some 65 are presently inhabited.

I went to a wedding in Stockholm about 3 years ago and thought I would learn a Swedish song for the occassion. The Groom was a Chilean refugee the Bride Russian and I think we counted 23 different nationalities at the wedding.

I was delighted that all the Scandanavians knew the one Swedish song I had learned and we sang the first verse in Swedish, English, Spanish, Russian, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish and some others I can't remember then sang the second verse in each of our laguages also. For a song with only two short verses it lasted about 30 minutes and was avery moving, unforgettable event.

I didn't find it in any scout songbooks, but it's in a book called Tent and Trail Songs from the American Camping Association, originally published in 1962 by the Cooperative Recreation Service - so I figure it's one of many international songs that came into use in the US by way of the Cooperative Recreation Service. It's also in a Cooperative Recreation Service book called East-West Songs, which apparently is the original U.S. source of this song.

Here's their version. It's only slightly different from the others, but posting the exact lyrics makes it less cumbersome to explain the MIDI.

My Dutch-South African friend sang the Cooperative Recreation Service translation Friday night. She's known it all her life, and I don't think she recalled where she learned it.


Another person at the song circle came up with translation, which appears to be the same song as one verse posted above:

Who can sail far away from friends

I can sail when there is not wind,

All this started me looking, and I found lots of recordings and translations. There's a nice YouTube recording here (click).
There's a somewhat different version on the Smithsonian/Folkways/Monitor album Best-Loved Songs of Sweden, by Saga Sjöberg and Kai Soderman. I don't see a date on the album notes, which say that "Vem Kan Segla" is a folksong from Norrland, which is the northern half of Sweden.

i was cleaning my room and found a piece of paper all folded up and wrote on the outside was 'sail away' and inside is a song similar to the ones here, but theres 2 added verses... i have no idea where i got this from but i wrote it down when i was like 8

wow so many different versions... I heard somebody else sing it and thought it was beautiful... haunting, almost eerie... anyway, they sang it like so.

They didn't have a second verse or anything. I heard someone sing it in French the other day, too. That's what got me looking. they called it "Sans verses des larmes" or something like that.

Finnish version. 'Vän' is translated as 'kulta', which is explicitly romantic, closer to 'sweetheart' or 'darling' than 'friend'. Then again, the Swedish 'vän' can be read as more romantic than English 'friend'. Also, this version refers to the 'sweetheart' going with someone else, not just 'separating'. Btw., I've seen a much longer Swedish lyrics to this, more like eight verses, no two.

Asked to sing for a charity gig in support of the Middle-East refugees (calais crisis, etc) I was led to review* the English translation and this version was indeed very well received by both an Irish audience and choir in the last two days. I hope you'll like it as well.

*(I was happy with none of the above versions which seem to betray the original Swedish or be prosodically/musically awkward...)

Note that this song can be sung as a round (canon), in my youth in France, we used to enter after the firs line (right after 'wind') which gave the song a //3rd-type of harmony.
Recently a young Norwegian woman living in Galway taught us to enter after the 2nd line (just after oar) which gives a //5th-type harmony, much more dramatic in tone! Absolutely gorgeous.

Note that by entering after both the 1st and 2nd lines, the harmony is even richer. Enjoy!

Swedish author, artist, composer and singer.

Taube edited the text and published the song in his first collection Sju sjömansvisor and Byssan Lull (Seven sailor songs and Byssan Lull ) in 1919.

Byssan Lull became known in 1921, when songwriter Evert Taube adapted it from a song his mother used to sing to him ; while the kettle is boiling, the song tells of various sets of three things, wanderers, stars or treasures.
