with respect, what you need is a cold shower, a bex, and a good lie down. If that doesnt work, try hitting your head against the wall.

Okay, Okay. I'm not talking kind, selfless, caring, paternal, maternal or brotherly love. I'm talking LOVE. Why am i feeling like this? Why am I feeling ripped in two? Why do i want everything? Why is just a bit not enough? Why do i cut myself off from people who would love me, by going for someone who doesnt really want or need me? Why does someone so passionate frighten me? Will I ever have someone to love again? Someone I can trust?

And why am I feeling this way when I'm meant to be old enough to know better?

M. Ted -- that doesn't necessarily follow. Medical understanding of the brain's chemistry in still in its infancy, and mind-altering drugs basically poke around in the dark. Even their makers don't really understand how and why they work or don't work.

THE twilight turns from amethyst
To deep and deeper blue,
The lamp fills with a pale green glow
The trees of the avenue.

The old piano plays an air,
Sedate and slow and gay;
She bends upon the yellow keys,
Her head inclines this way.

Shy thoughts and grave wide eyes and hands
That wander as they list--
The twilight turns to darker blue
With lights of amethyst.

CXVI

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no, it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempest and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
   If this be error, and upon me proved,
   I never writ, nor man ever loved.

W. Shakespeare

Here is an interesting site about the biochemical roots of love.

And here is a review of what looks to be a very interesting book on the subject.

Not to slight the mystics around here, but what we experience as emotions, perhaps even all of reality, is the result of chemical processes inside our brains.

Cheers,
Michael

A bit of pedantry here: What we call love is often only infatuation. And sometimes the distinction is confusing. A song I wrote kind of typifies this idea:

Ten Thousand Tomorrows

Long ago you were all the world to me
From here to horizon, far as I could see
But time- it moved on, leaving you behind
Ten thousand tomorrows you've been out of my mind.
      Once I really loved you. I loved you a lot
      Once I really loved you. Why have I forgot?

Forgotten the way you sat in a chair
Forgotten your smile and the scent of your hair
Don't even recall the touch of your hand
Forgotten it all- it's not what I planned.
       Once I really loved you. Just when did I stop?
       Once I really loved you. Why have I forgot?

I open this morning's paper and there is your face
Next to some strangers, each one in its place
Yesterday you died- imagine my shock
Once I really loved you. Why have I forgot?
Once I really loved you...

I submit I didn't really love him.

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

Pablo Neruda

Love is when one is willing do things harmful to one's own interest for another's ( presumed) happiness.

Stephen Crane

In the Desert

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter – bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

AT that hour when all things have repose,
O lonely watcher of the skies,
Do you hear the night wind and the sighs
Of harps playing unto Love to unclose
The pale gates of sunrise?

When all things repose do you alone
Awake to hear the sweet harps play
To Love before him on his way,
And the night wind answering to antiphon
Till night is overgone?

Play on, invisible harps, unto Love,
Whose way in heaven is aglow
At that hour when soft lights come and go,
Soft sweet music in the air above
And in the earth below.

James Joyce

I Knew a Woman

I knew a woman, lovely in her bones,
When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them;
Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
The shapes a bright container can contain!
Of her choice virtues only gods should speak,
Or English poets who grew up on Greek
(I'd have them sing in chorus, cheek to cheek.)

How well her wishes went! She stroked my chin,
She taught me Turn, and Counter-turn, and stand;
She taught me Touch, that undulant white skin:
I nibbled meekly from her proffered hand;
She was the sickle; I, poor I, the rake,
Coming behind her for her pretty sake
(But what prodigious mowing did we make.)

Love likes a gander, and adores a goose:
Her full lips pursed, the errant note to seize;
She played it quick, she played it light and loose;
My eyes, they dazzled at her flowing knees;
Her several parts could keep a pure repose,
Or one hip quiver with a mobile nose
(She moved in circles, and those circles moved.)

Let seed be grass, and grass turn into hay:
I'm martyr to a motion not my own;
What's freedom for? To know eternity.
I swear she cast a shadow white as stone.
But who would count eternity in days?
These old bones live to learn her wanton ways:
(I measure time by how a body sways.)

Love is:- Well falling in love is wonderful as it heightens all those physical and emotional feelings we all get but true love goes beyond that....Where in time the hearts and flowers wend their weary way into the distant past..LOVE the verb should expect to arrive on the scene..in other words love becomes a doing thing...it takes working at to keep the status quo(Nothing to do with the group).
I would die for the woman I love......
trouble is....I don't have a woman.....to love.......Oh well, nice car, good friends, nice flat, bottle of wine (and a spare bottle of whisky). Like my own cooking, love food.....in fact.....l
LOVE being on my own and being Loved by a wonderful God..
Be Blessed.

Indeed it was by Ani DiFranco, well worth a download.

Good site too, ive been there a few times. the whole site is good.

Also if you go to the lyrics heading, and click "appropriate lyrics" it gives you the top 5 songs for categories.
Some surprises you never knew turn up, like REM's 'the one i love' is actually about stalking. etc.

Perhaps it might be mentioned that "Untouchable Face" was written by Ani Difranco.

Here are a whole mess of popular love song lyrics. As Abe Lincoln is said to have once written, people who like this sort of thing will find this is the sort of thing they like.

Think i'm going for a walk now
i feel a little unsteady
i don't want nobody to follow me, except maybe you

i could make you happy, you know
if you weren't already
i could do a lot of things, and i do

To tell you the truth i prefer the worst of you
too bad you had to have a better half
she's not really my type
but i think you two are forever
and i hate to say it but you're perfect together

so f**k you, and your untouchable face
f**k you, for existing in the first place
and who am i that i should be vying for your touch
who am i, bet you can't even tell me that much

2:30 in the morning
and my gas tank will be empty soon
neon sign on the horizon rubbing elbows with the moon
safe haven of the sleepless
where the deep fryer's always on
radio is counting down the top 20 country songs

out on the porch the fly strip is waving like a flag in the wind
you know i really don't look forward to seeing you again soon.

you look like a photograph of yourself taken from far far away
i won't know what to do, i won't know what to say

i see you and i'm so perplexed, what was i thinking
what will i think of next
where can i hide?
in the back room there's a lamp that hangs over the pool table
and when the fan is on it swings gently side to side
there's a changing constellation of balls as we are playing
i see orion and say nothing
the only thing i can think of saying
is f**k you... and your untouchable face
f**k you, for existing in the first place
f**k you...

love is more thicker than forget
more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail

it is most mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe
than all the sea which only
is deeper than the sea

love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive

it is most sane and sunly
and more it cannot die
than all the sky which only
is higher than the sky

I liked that, thanks.

heres a little something from David Gates, fantastic lyrics and such a lovely song. i can send this to anyone that would like a copy on MP3, its beautiful.

The skies are not as blue when you're not with me
The stars they never seem to shine as bright
And the hours crack like days across the ages
And a year or two pass by with every night
It makes me know if i should ever leave this world before you do
When you follow you must promise, cross your heart and promise to

Find me...look hard, and dont stop, I'll be waiting 'till then
Dont sleep, and dont eat 'till I'm back, back in your arms again
I dont wanna have to spend all my forever without you.
Just knowing that your out there somewhere too.
So darlin...please I'm begging you on bended knee...
Find me...

I've tried to tell this world how much i love you.
But they dont understand how deep it goes.
And i can't even find the words to tell you
So I'm the only one who really knows.
And though we have our times together, I am always wanting more
So if we get separated wont you do just like before and

Find me...look hard and dont stop, I'll be waiting 'till then
Dont sleep, and dont eat 'till I'm back, back in your arms again
Through a hundred million faces you will see me shinning through.
'Cause I'll glow when you come close , I always do.
So darlin' please im begging you on bended knee..
We can share our love through all eternity
'Cause with you is all i ever wanna be......
Find me

Someone gave my mother season tickets to the opera.
She went with my sister, or me, or one of her friends. Dad didn't care for opera, and they were both perfectly happy if he spent the evening at home with his dog and his histories, and she went off to enjoy the pleasures of Verdi and Puccini.
Then, one night, mother couldn't find anyone to go with. She told dad she was going by herself, and, when he expressed reservations, she told him that she had gotten to know two gentlemen who had the seats behind her, and she was certain that they would see her to her car.
Dad announced that he was taking mother to the opera.
My father sat through Donizetti's "Elixir of Love", to protect mother from two potential roue's. She was, at the time, 58, and she looked it. Dad was three years older, but it hadn't occurred to him that men might not find the woman he married attractive.
Mother's two friends didn't find women attractive. Fortunately, they didn't find dad attractive either.
Dad's description of the opera included the line, "And the balcony was too high for a John Wilkes Booth leap, so I was forced to endure."
The only thing that would have saved the performance for him was if two of the singers had a sword fight. Then dad could have critiqued the fencing. There are no swordfights in "Elixir of Love".
My parents didn't have the happiest marriage in the world, but my father sat through an opera, with no fencing, to protect my mother from two gay men, because he thought she was still the very beautiful lady he married. I think that has a lot to do with love.

Pretty song, though! And I like Ride of the Valkyres too. Let's meet for a cyber-lunch ok? ANd I'm sorry you found my words antagonizing ... but please don't misunderstand.

So if you're sorry, there's no Love Story? That doesn't sound right to me. When I need to apologize to someone, I do. What's the alternative -- expecting others to be mind-readers because I love them and vice versa? Not apologizing at all if I've said or done something hurtful?

Sorry, I just don't see how that would benefit a relationship, or make me into more loving person.
