Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Daithi Date: 19 Feb 04 - 05:03 AM There are many informative websites ( as well as the usual trash) for those seriously interested in finding out more. From the tenor of most of the postings here so far though, I doubt that many will pursue them. For those already involved, the main problem in discussing Wicca with non pagans is where to start! (For example, in the US the term is applied very broadly - and increasingly so in the UK too. Originally - and strictly speaking - it refers to a tradition of practices developed since the early 1950s, but based upon and drawing inspiration from pre-Christian spirituality.) I have many Pagan and non-Pagan friends and I respond to them all on the basis of what they do and say, not on their belief systems - which are entirely a matter for them. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Catherine Jayne Date: 19 Feb 04 - 05:00 AM Not all Witches 'work' skyclad....nekkid for those of you who wanted to know. Paganism is like Christianity in the sense that it has many denominations. Not all Witches are Wiccan and not all Pagans are Witches......I would go and do some research if I were you |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: GUEST Date: 19 Feb 04 - 04:46 AM "It's all bollocks and boobs" apparently according to some of the posts, any chance of some info from an informed source ? |

Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Teresa Date: 19 Feb 04 - 04:24 AM Oops, I goofed; thought you'd initiated the thread, PP; should have paid more attention. I apologize. But I agree; that was harsh. :) Teresa |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Teresa Date: 19 Feb 04 - 04:19 AM Were you really asking a question, PP? Do you have something of real magic or pagan practices to teach that might enlighten? Teresa |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: GUEST Date: 19 Feb 04 - 04:17 AM Boab "fancy dress parades" thats rich when talking about the Wicca creed, look at the garments they wear or DON'T wear at certain times running around the forests in the good old buff etc. This is not a criticism but an observation. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Bobjack Date: 19 Feb 04 - 03:45 AM POST NUMBER 100. I THANK YOU, YOU HAVE MADE AN OLD GUINEA PIG VERY HAPPY. Oh, sorry, wrong thread. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Bobjack Date: 19 Feb 04 - 03:36 AM sorry, wrong thread. I thought this was all about Alan Wicca. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: GUEST,Boab Date: 19 Feb 04 - 02:46 AM I tend to agreement with Michaelr on this. While "the Green Man", corn dollies and woodland dances around [and over] fires as indulged by those of the Wiccan persuasion are in the "frivolity" category for most people, LESS harm appears to have resulted from the practice of this creed than has come from the even more airy-fairy mumbo-jumbo, waving of incense burners, creation of something called "holy water", assertions about wee bits of bread being "the Body", and fancy-dress parades every Sunday in big cold stone buildings. And note how much real Love there is between Presbyterians, Catholics, Episcopalians and Seventh Day Adventists; all "worshipping" the same "three-person" God! I think Wiccans and Bhuddists have the edge..... |

Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: LadyJean Date: 18 Feb 04 - 11:10 PM Speaking as a Presbyterian, I would say that Wicca depends on the witch. I know some fine witches, who have found a belief system that works for them. I also know some prize flakes, who have found creative and inventive ways of being flaky. My advice to anyone exploring the wiccan world is, be careful about giving out your phone number. You may meet someone who thinks that calling at 3 in the morning just to rap is perfectly reasonable. I also reccomend that you be careful about taking checks. Most Wiccans are honest. But you may run across someone who thinks they can't be overdrawn unless they run out of checks. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: GUEST,The Beast Date: 18 Feb 04 - 09:34 PM "Do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" "Love is the Law - Love under Will" Chewy little maxims, yes - not intended and quite ill-suited for the "gentle reader". |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Peace Date: 18 Feb 04 - 07:35 PM Stop now, or we will be runed! (Pretty good, huh? Just rolled right off my tongue. No applause necessary. It's a gift.) |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: michaelr Date: 18 Feb 04 - 07:29 PM Un-educated -- forget about spells and such mumbo-jumbo. What youre talking about is paganism. Of course there are all kinds of different new-age approaches, but basically it's a throwback to pre-christian (read: pagan) spiritual beliefs which honor the forces of nature embodied in the female deity (the goddess). Makes a lot more sense to me than any of the patriarchal control systems that have been foisted on mankind as "religion". A good book for understanding these things is Mara Freeman's "Kindling the Celtic Spirit" (HarperCollins, 2001) Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Richard Bridge Date: 18 Feb 04 - 07:07 PM The credo is of course an antonym for the classic "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law", popularised for millions by Denis Wheatley. Is there any indication that Wicca is less bogus than any other organised religion? Do the spells work? If so it must be real, no? |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Cobble Date: 18 Feb 04 - 06:52 PM PP what have I done. Cobble (Cobbled)??? |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Cluin Date: 18 Feb 04 - 05:10 PM "An it harm none, do what thou wilt" Bit of a philosophical conundrum, that. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Midchuck Date: 18 Feb 04 - 04:09 PM Among other things, it seems to be a way to provide religious sanction for getting naked and partying. Where were they when I was young and handsome? Based on the "Wiccan Rede" - "An it harm none, do what thou wilt," they appear to be libertarian mystics, which ought to be an oxymoron, but apparently isn't to them. I can certainly live with that as an ethical and moral code, provided a definition of "harm," that satisfies everyone, can be arrived at. Peter. |
Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: GUEST Date: 18 Feb 04 - 02:59 PM looks very interesting to me seems like any other group, there are those that take it very seriously, those that are far more relaxed about the whole thing, certain secrets, certain mystic, those that strip off on certain occasions throughout the year and those that dont, could be dangerous I quess if in the wrong hands... |

Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Grab Date: 18 Feb 04 - 12:33 PM A bit harsh, PP. :-) Other religions (or offshoots of major religions) follow the teachings of a particular leader who claims to have been influenced somehow by God (either influenced through revelations, or directly descended from God), a leader who was known to be very wise and clever, or several of the above. Wicca, by contrast, was invented by modern people from research into old spells recorded in historical documents. How much trust you want to put in historical documents as to the accuracy of witches' spells, that's anyone's guess. Graham. |

Subject: RE: What is wicca all about From: Pied Piper Date: 18 Feb 04 - 10:24 AM Wicca is a cobbled together dog's dinner of so called "Celtic" mysticism and varying amounts of "new age" pseudoscience for modern people that haven't got the guts to be atheists. PP |
