Subject: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Buddybud Date: 15 Mar 04 - 10:36 PM I would really, truly, absolutely love some names of different folk artists that people know and want to share; I love Kate Rusby and Nic Jones, and a couple contemporary American folk artists, but who else should I be listening to? --Buddy |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Alex.S Date: 15 Mar 04 - 10:49 PM Ewan MacColl is an excellent British folk singer and perhaps my favorite, and I highly recommend Doc Watson for blues/American folk. |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Alaska Mike Date: 15 Mar 04 - 11:06 PM Some of my favorites are Canadian Stan Rogers and Aussie Eric Bogle. We've got some great performers here in MudCat too like Kendall Morse, Seamus Kennedy and Jed Marum. Archie Fisher is another great songwriter. There, I've put in my 2 cents. Mike |

And in albuquerque, there are a few of fellows who sing on Paltalk, and who have c.d's out: Bernie and Songster and South Western Picker there are probably amazinig musicians in your town or your area! support live, local music and you will be pleaseantly surprised! There are so many talented people about - my favourite bands are Threlfall Ellison Edwards and Garva. My favourite solo performer is John Kirkpatrick. Difficult to single out a few when there are so many! If you want more info on these people, email me from my website (link above). |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: pavane Date: 16 Mar 04 - 05:59 AM June Tabor, though I prefer her earlier work (Airs & Graces album particularly) One of my all-time favourite albums was by Archie Fisher. Also (the late) Tony Rose for tradional English songs |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Morticia Date: 16 Mar 04 - 06:20 AM Richard Thompson |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: The Borchester Echo Date: 16 Mar 04 - 06:30 AM If you like Nic Jones then you must listen to Chris Wood who followed on in the guitar/fiddlesinging style. His project, the English Acoustic Collective, includes John Dipper and Rob Harbron - which leads us to Dr Faustus (Rob + Tim van Eyken, Paul Sartin and Benji Kirkpatrick) - which then leads us to Bellowhead, the new big band venture founded by John Spiers and Jon Boden... The Kate Rusby band often includes Andy Cutting and Ian Carr, both of whom collaborate musically with Chris, as do Martin Carthy and Roger Wilson. Then there's the Two Duos Quartet (Chris/Andy/Ian and Karen Tweed). There's a start, investigating these will lead you to other fine exponents of English music today. But I must endorse the suggestion above for the sadly missed Tony Rose - and his former collaborators Pete Coe, Chris Coe and full circle...to Nic Jones. |

Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Amos Date: 16 Mar 04 - 12:50 PM I second Kendall's list with one GLARING correction. He left off one of the best foksingers around, a crafty down-Easter named Morse. I think CAMSCO covers him. Don't miss him!! He's really got that elusive "it". First name is Kendall -- Kendall Morse -- but that's just a coincidence or something. A |

Get hold of a CD called 'Voices: English folk songs'(Fellside) It has tracks from many fine singers. I'd like to add Janet Russell, Witches of Elswick and Grace Notes to the list. Happy listening! |

Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Amos Date: 16 Mar 04 - 04:04 PM "Said 'It doesn't just come from a horse....'" d'ye think? ...or "Recovered from feeling quite hoarse" or perhaps ..."Had an act that was folk tour de force!" or even, "born from forebears who might have been Norse..." if that gets you anywhere! LOL! A |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Buddybud Date: 16 Mar 04 - 04:45 PM I feel sort of left out. The party is across seas and me without a boat. Much as I love the US I have nostalgia pangs for an England I've never been to. To Americans (or at least this one anyhow) England is the England of Stratford on Avon, and little John Keats, and Mr.Pickwick, and who doesn't miss that? And the step from your books to your music is small. These suggestions are great, by the way. I've already spent a hundred dollars (and even some pounds, which was a first) on music today, which I feel only marginally guilty about. Buddy |
Subject: RE: I'd LOVE some Folk Artist suggestions From: Midchuck Date: 16 Mar 04 - 05:12 PM ...Said, "I'm bored with mundane intercourse! All good Maine folksingers Prefer cunnilingus!" (And that's how his voice got so hoarse!) ...Tried to sodomize Lobsters by force. The obvious flaws In his plan, involved claws; And now, he's a eunuch, of course. Ahh, the possibilities...my mind swirls. Peter. |
