I cannot make the Mudcat Eurogathering 2004 - May 1st-3rd, as I am committed to performing at Upton Folk Festival.
Who else is going to Upton? I shall be singing with the Shellback Chorus (but not dancing with Tarka Morris Men as I did last year as unfortunately they cannot raise a team).
I usually go to the White Lion for the singing in between Shellback stuff but this time I may go to a music session or two. Which are the best pubs for music sessions, preferably with mostly English music?
"Abroad for pleasure ...!"
Alan

THE place for unaccompanied singing is the White Lion. (And the Rugby club after hours while the beer lasts!)

Last year the Star had mixed/accompanied singing, as did the Muggery.
The nearer the river you get, the more likely you are to have morris/Irish instrumental sessions.

Emma, Lucy, Hils, Mary - see you all in the Lion at sometime over the weekend

English music sessions are usually in the King's Head or on the riverfront if the weather is kind.

John Henry & I will be there. We are both first aiding. Is the White Lion that pub with the long thin bar that very quickly got very smokey?

JudeL: yes!
Further (inconclusive) news on the Bridge!
As Col K said there will be a restriction ...
I heard a recent local radio programme suggest that there will be a width restriction of 2.25 metres (or 7 foot 4 inches) ...
But then again, I drove past an access point to it today and it said that the restriction was for 6 feet (or 1.83 metres) ...
Well, as my just-about-to-be-acquired motor home will be 6 foot 8 inches that leaves me in a bit of a quandry!
Although there is nothing on the AA Traffic News website as yet, no doubt there will be very specific details nearer the time.
Anyway, I will post any further local details I get, if I get them before Col K ...

All the pubs in Upton seem to welcome singers/musicians. The Muggery often has a mixed sing/play, and Alhambra have been known to lead SARs at the Star. But the basic rule at Upton seems to be: if you can't find the sort of session you want - Start One!

The latest on the bridge restriction: As I was passing along the A38 today, there were roadsigns saying "Diversion for 3T vehicles and for vehicles wider than 2.25 metres (7 feet 4 inches) ... So at least the roadsigns now say the same thing as the radio broadcasts!
Looking forward to it - its only 11 days away!
I think I might get there on the Thursday: presumably there will be a session somewhere for the advance guard of stewards?

EEk... not long now. My trailer is being touched up! The paint started to peel from the heavy rain at Warwick last year. It will be wonderful to out there again after the long winter. I'm really looking forward to seeing you all again. Schantie is coming for the Friday night and some of Saturday. Hopefully we'll get a few songs in at the White Lion and in the folk Club.

Hey Snuffy and AllanWW, wasn't the Malt shovel a good day yesterday? It was fun getting the 'dogs' out for the day! I got disoriented, I thought I was at a festival already.

Repeat message regarding the Bridge at Upton

This year there is a big problem with the Bridge at Upton.
It cannot take heavy or large vehicles, so the Highways people have restricted the traffic over the bridge to cars only. It has a one way system with traffic lights, so even if you can get through the width restriction, there are likely to be queues.
The best thing to do is to avoid coming off the junction on the A38 to Upton, and cross the river either at Worcester (If you are coming from the NORTH) or at Tewkesbury, at the Mythe Bridge(if you are coming from the South). Take at a look at the map first, bearing in mind the obvious route using the A38 and the Upton bridge is not an option).
Cars with caravans are advised not to try to get over the bridge, as the width restriction is very tight, and there are concrete walls in place to stop wider/ higher vehicles.

Have fun all - and good singing!

A big thank you to everyone who helped with the Festival.
The campsite stewards and task force in particular contributed a great deal to the success of the event. We would also like to thank in particular several unsung heroswho helped out with their 4 * 4's on the campsite .(The last time it rained like that we had three years of festivals with brilliant weather.)

Also the festival helped the town at a time when businesses were starting to be badly affected by the width and height restrictions on the Upton Bridge. (There are plans of the repair scheme shown on the main Upton site).

Hope you all got home safely.

2005 here we come.

Lovely festival, we had a great time, until Helen got a migraine.
Finney ('Racing name 'Finane Wind') enjoyed herself, especially meeting the other greyhounds on the site (you could almost see her perk up as she met 'proper dogs')
Maidenhead were there in force and the shared 'Folk Club' was one of the best sessions of its type that I've been to in years.
Enjoyed several of the concerts and the general atmosphere was great.
Well done to all concerned.
