I'm looking for lyrics to two songs in gaelic from the Clannad album 'Dulaman'. They are 'Mo Mhaire' and 'dTigeas a Damhsa'.

Dear Maelgwyn, I've done an exhaustive search on the Net and through my own resource material, but I cannot find the lyrics for these two songs. If you are able to get them, would you please be so kind as to post them on the Mudcat? They are both lovely songs, aren't they? Adh mor ort! Slan, Aine

Hi,

I did find a Clannad lyric site at one stage, can't find it now. (probably through Jen's or International Lyrics server). I do remember it only had english lyrics.

Slainte

I find that if you hum along to the tune with your mouth open, and then on every third beat open your mouth a bit wider and form a consonant (without stopping humming), it sounds just like you know the lyrics anyway. This will work for any audience who aren't gaelic speaking. Of course any gaelic speakers will be so incensed that they will probably tear you a new orifice. I hope this helps

Martin

Subject: Lyr Add: MO MHÁIRE and DTIGEAS A DAMHSA

My Dulaman LP has all the lyrics added, so here are the two songs. Please blame my scanner for all the typos left and not me. Of course I tried to improve the partial mess he made of the copy, but proofreading in a language you do not know at all is a very challenging job.

Mo Mháire

Ag feis nó dáil níl bean le fáil
Chomh sciamhach le mo Mháire
Tá aice cneas bog bán a’s deas
Do chuirfeadh lil' faoi náire;
'san domhan seo, níl aon chroí chomh díl
Nó cailín tá nfos fire-
‘measc óg nó sean 'sí plúr na mban
Is ise bród na tíre.

Tá gruaig mo stóir mar fháinni óir
A' titim sios go talamh;
Thar muinéal bán as guaille lán
A cuma 'tá mar dhealbh.
Gí glan soi1éir gach réalt 'san spéir
Tá súil mo ghrá nios glaine
's binne g1ór mo chailin óig
Ná cláirsí ciúin na cruinne.

'Measc aos óg i leathar bróg
Ar urlár, cúirt nó pairliúin
Níor sheas le taobh aon fhear ariamh
Bean-rinceoir leath chomh hálainn
Má bhris si croí aon óganaigh
Gan bréag do bhris si céadta
‘gus tá na mná fáil bháis gach lá
Le troim' is neart a n-éada.

dTigeas A DAMHSA

dTigeas a damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?
dTigeas a damhsa damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?

Goirm i gcónaí gcónai, goirm i gcónaí dom,
Goirrn i gcónaí 'gcónaí 'gcónaí, maidin Dé Luain a b’fhearr.

dTigeas a damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?
dTigeas a damhsa damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?

Buachaill aniar aniar, buachaih aniar a b'fhearr,
Buachaill aniar aniar aniar, is cailín ó Shliabh na bPeann.

dTigeas a damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a darnhsa dom?
dTigeas a damhsa damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?

Buachaill maith súiste súiste, buachaill maith súiste a b'fhearr,
Buachaill maith súiste súiste súiste súiste is cailín deas túirne leann.

dTigeas a damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?
dTigeas a damhsa damhsa damhsa, dTigeas a damhsa dom?

Sometimes you really might think the scanner has a life of its own, but the "he" was only an intrusion from the German "der".

Dear Wolfgang:

You're brilliant!! There are a few mistakes in the Irish -- I'll fix them this evening and repost tomorrow. I am very impressed with you, especially since you don't have an Irish on you. Maith thú! Thanks so much for sharing the words with all of us -- these are two very lovely songs that deserve to be 'out and about'. Slán go fóill, Áine

by the way:
this is the second set of gaelic lyrics from Clannad I could post to a request. Does this mean that all of you are so young that you own your Clannad recordings as CDs and I'm the only one left with half a dozen Clannad LPs (all of them with complete lyrics!) or should I think that they added the lyrics for the German market only assuming that in Ireland this was unnecessary?

Wolfgang

Hi wolfgang,

I got "Fuaim", and "Macalla" as LPs in Belfast, they had all the lyrics, Irish, & English.

Hi Alison, yes, it makes sense not to omit the lyrics on one market.

Go raibh míle maith agat, a Wolfgang.

Unfortunately, some of us are such "newbies" that we have only the cd versions. Many lacking lyrics. Thank you for being!
