from Halifax, Nova Scotia

This man has a truly wonderful voice , often compared with the late great Stan Rogers with its strength and quality.

Tuesday 27th April he will be at the St Albans Folk-song club at the Duke of Marlborough for a 'one-off'

Do come and listen if you're in the area, you'll be made to feel very welcome.

Actually, without any disrespect to Stan, I think Dan MacKinnon has a better voice, but I agree that there is something similar in quality.

Definitely recommended.

The way I usually try to explain Dan McKinnon's singing is :

He like a more resonant version of Stan Rogers. Kind of like, "Dan Out-Stan-Rogers Stan Rogers".

I met Dan twice and fell in love with his voice before I had heard of Stan. I still think I marginally prefer Stan's timbre at the bottom of the register, but Dan's is much better above it. The point is - Dan is a WONDERFUL singer. He is considered the best performer of Stan Rogers songs around, and at the 20th anniversary concert (from Stan's death) at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium (Stan's favourite venue), guess who was asked to sing Stan's songs - Dan McKinnon of course!.

But he is not simply a performer of Stan's songs. He has written many equally wonderful songs himself. The one he wrote about missing his young son makes me cry as much as "Lies" ever did. And the one about the Nova Scotia fishermen's "underrun" method of fishing (no longer used, I believe) has you out of your seat before you know it.

He is also a good-looking giant of a Canadian (%$£^^&%*$%"£!!!), and one of the most generous people I know (and the folk scene has plenty).

GO AND SEE HIM - I personally guarantee the quality and defy anyone not to enjoy an evening listening to Dan McKinnon!

El Greko,

Huh? The Stan Rogers Tribute at the Rebecca Cohn Theatre that I was at was notable in NOT having Dan McKinnon. Somehow I missed that show you mentioned.

Dan McKinnon was the featured performer playing the part in a touring show many years ago which was part of the Halifax's Neptune Theatre.

As you say, he's got plenty of his own songs and sings in his own style which is pretty terrific.

If you people in the UK get to see his shows, PLEASE tell us what you think.

You must have missed it, George - it was a concert with the Philharmonic backing Dan (though I didn't think much of some of their arrangements). Dan got hold of a recording of the evening and sent me a copy on CD.

George Seto

Dan's one of my favourite singers. I always try to get to see him when he's over here so I'm looking forward to next Tuesday evening at the Windward Folk Song Club - the Duke of Marlborough in St Albans. (Another plug for you Breezy!)

A couple of years ago at (was it?) Bridgnorth festival, Dan did an hour of Stan Rogers' songs. It was magic. I know he sings more of his own songs now (and very good they are too) but I still like to hear his interpretations of Stan's songs because he does them so well.

You are a lucky lot over in Canada.

Unfortunately not a lot of people respect him like you lot do over there. Keep it up, and keep buying his recordings. I know he appreciates it.

It wont be that bad,
well almost,
shame you cant come to the Spotlight with Les and do a warm up for Tuesday.

moses took Sharps by storm last Tuesday.

Ampthill is far enough away not to affect St Albans as neither clubs supporters travel very far for their music, only the singers.

thing is you've got to follow any fall off from leadswinger!!!

You must come to St Albans soon Kitty, please.
How about for the 2nd of Les's appearances.

Having seen both of them live, twice each, I personally would give an edge to Dan. Not much of an edge, Ian is so very good also. But Dan's voice gives him that edge - you don't hear many voices like that for a tenner (or for quite a lot more, actually). It has both the sweetness of Martyn Wyndham-Read and the punch of Stan Rogers. If he was singing anthems, you'd follow him, whatever the cause.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dan in Halifax at the Nova Scotia Tall Ships event in 2000,and singing with him in a quintet that week....blew us all away[not intentionally]..nice guy, great voice, fine guitarist and songwriter.....has it all....an under-appreciated treasure, who should not have to be busking[even part-time]for a livelihood.....nothing wrong with that, perfectly honourable, but he deserves more and better venues.......

It promises to be an evening of some fine singing and songs

Just dropped Dan off at the airport, where he's seeing Nancy (his SO, a sweetie) off for her return to Canada. Expected back home by noon to change strings and rest (we only slept 3 hrs last night, having to get up early for Nancy's departure). He promised to do a few Stan Rogers songs, as well as his own (my favourites of his are the "Underrun" song and the one about his son). I'll be happy to listen to him read the telephone directory, with such a voice as his.

Nancy really LOVED Herga last night, with all the glorious Herga singing and the excellent sets by TE&E. She is sorely disappointed she couldn't be at Snorbans tonight, especially now that she knows the kind of reception Dan will get there. But work called...

See you tonight. I'll be the one with a permanent grin on my face.

Good night at Herga as mentioned above and I won the bottle of wine in the raffle, to add to the one I won at Waltham Abbey last Monday. Better find another Monday club with wine in the raffle for next week and go for the hat trick.

Lovely to see Dan twice in one week (he was also at Herga on Monday for a two-song "spot").

Great evening, lots of good support singers (must avoid that red-topped stool - anyone who touched it or sat on it seemed to have a senior moment with their words).

AND I won the raffle - one of Dan's CDs - is this a record for Windward, (winning an actual CD of the artiste who's performing)?

Looking forward to hearing it but there's nothing like the real thing. Next time, Dan, more notice of tour dates then we can book you at Herga.

Dan's off to Whitby (via Gloucester?) this weekend. If you're up there he's a must-see!

Well, I saw Dan today home from his trip to the UK.

He said that he had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed himself. What's there not to enjoy for him? Working constantly, with attentive audiences who actually are BUYING his recordings! vs No gigs, aside from the busking, to people who aren't listening, and don't buy a thing!

I'm sure he wishes he could stay there instead of coming home!

He was a pleasure to have here.

We enjoyed his St Albans gig

He has revived and remotivated some sections of song.

I'll remember our visit to Stourbridge when we tested the acoustics in the indoor shopping centre.Shame it was raining outdoors all day. Then I had the pleasure of hearing him that night along with some friends who came over.

I then journeyed overnight to Cornwall and landed at 6.30 a m

How was the moor an c for him?

G'Day All,

The Moor & Coast was wonderful. A great "little" festival. I think it is gaining in reputation, or at least that's what it felt like to me. There were other wonderful acts and great people to boot; Cloudstreet, HowdenJones, Tom & Tom, Geoff Turner who MC'd most of the events at The Endeavour, the Witches of Elswick and many more.

Thank you all for the most enjoyable of tours. Also, as of this coming Monday I am officially starting to book for next year. And if things keep going they way that they have begun, I will be heading over twice next year, spring and autumn. So if any out there have preferences please let me know and also, any who might be interested and I don't have your essentials, please feel free to forward them on to me at:

dan.mckinnon@ns.sympatico.ca

I'd hate to leave anyone out, or miss any spots.

And before I head off, Thank you all for finding places for Nancy and me to rest, and recouperate, and rejuvenate, and just, overall, enjoy ourselves.

Thank you and with luck I'll see you all soon and be in touch even sooner.

Again, Many Thanks!

Dan

I caught Dan's act at Moor & Coast. I'm so glad he enjoyed himself, because Whitby certainly enjoyed him (one comment was "absolutely orgasmic voice").

I just wish I had known his name, to make a point of reading this thread sooner, and hearing more of his performances.

Look forward to seeing you again sometime, Dan.
