Interesting to see the various messages in this thread over the years. Seems as if nobody (and I'm no exception) can remember more than a few lines of the "unofficial" words we used to sing as kids. As has been noted, Guest, Julia, way back in May '04 came up with a translation of the German words used in Lohengrin. I'd seen a translation of them myself somewhere and though I can't remember if they were exactly the same as those she quoted, the sense of them is certainly the same.

Also, Lucius mentioned above that the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin is used as a recessional and that the traditional processional is Mendelssohn's Wedding March (from the Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, as stated). Actually the opposite is true. The Bridal Chorus was written with words sung by the opera chorus, and starts with the tune of "Here Comes the Bride." The Mendelssohn was written as strictly instrumental music to be played during breaks in the play.

Just for dating purposes — most of the 'fat & wide, see how she wobbles' versions above are attrib'd to the posters' own 50s childhoods. I learned it in my 30s childhood from my mother, born 1909, from her childhood recollections, So that verse goes back a good way.

For the record:

It comes back to me that in my mother's version, ca 2nd decade of C20 [see my entry 18 nov 09 1024], the Bride did not wiggle, waggle nor wobble, but "waddled" ~ an expressive verb for a fat·&·wide woman's movements that I don't think appears anywhere above.
