We have a website at the following address: Toypresidents It has come to our attention that a group of idiots on this internet forum and another (where I am also posting this message) has taken it upon themselves to organize a "voting" campaign to make Millard Fillmore the most popular President in the history of the United States of America on our voting page. Millard Fillmore! You heard me right. Well, it's an outrage! Here we are trying to respond to a loyal and freedom-loving American public and determine which past Presidents most merit being enshrined in a talking plastic action figure, and Millard Fillmore most certainly does not! He was, relatively speaking, a nobody. Even if we get 35,000 phony votes for Millard F-ing Fillmore, we will NEVER manufacture an action figure of him. But due to the scurrilous and repetitive voting of these unemployed and idle provocateurs we now have more votes for Millard Fillmore entered in our website's voting tally than for Theodore Roosevelt or John F. Kennedy!!! (both of whom have been released as Toypresident action figures) Believe me, we at Toypresidents are not going to stand idly by while our website is hijacked for the inane amusement of a bunch of unpatriotic layabouts. We are going to take stern action to halt this abuse of our good intentions. I am requesting every loyal American who cares deeply about his country, its flag, and its constitution to go straight to Toypresidents this moment and vote AGAINST MILLARD FILLMORE! DO IT NOW! Vote for the three REAL most popular Presidents of your choice and drive Millard Fillmore back to the bottom of the heap where he so richly belongs! Vote! Vote! Vote! So we've kept it going over there although it has slowed down a bit. We started with only about 250 votes for Millard and at the current time are at 3563......not too shaggy! When we hit 5th place where we are now, the jump to the next position really became significant. Before that time there was only something less than 300 votes between president at the most. Jefferson was 1500 votes ahead and the task looked impossible but we have actually cut that to 931 as of this morning. And yes Hawk, at a few levels like Teddy Roosevelt and JFK it became obvious that someone had even more time than we did and was doing some ballot stuffing of their own. Nice try Hawkster but no cigar. I don't know that the group will elect to continue on a lot longer because like here, after awhile a joke just wears out!!! In 1994 I was working for the local supervisor of elections. My job for them immdiately after the main election was to supervise visual recounts of write-in votes, which meant that I sat in a room with 20 volunteers checking their work in tallying 2 races that had valid write-in candidates. Since my friends knew this, they decided to say "hi" by writing in my name instead of the valid candidate. I receieved 42 votes, while the actual write-in candidate received 104. But I beat Mickey Mouse who received only 30 (which is pretty poor showing in the Florida county that is the home of Disney World). I got in a bit of trouble with that, my bosses didn't believe that I hadn't orchestrated the whole thing. |

Riffing on Blackcatter's post above... here's another thing we could work on simultaneously with voting for Fillmore. Let's make George W. Bush come in last! Every time you vote, one vote goes to Fillmore and the other two go to the two presidents who are directly below him (right now, James Munroe and Lyndon Johnson). The numbers are pretty close together in the south end of the list, so he would descend quickly (and you'd have to keep checking to see which two were on the list to pass him next). Sounds like a noble cause, eh? I tossed Adams a handful of votes today as well (though I must admit that the first time I voted for John Quincy Adams by mistake). Certainly we can skip the elevation of Hoover when his name comes up. So I got out the calculator to do a little figuring myself: how many votes would it take to get Bush into the bottom ten? Well, to get the six candidates below him up to 700 points each would take a total of 1291 votes - but only 646 trips to the ballot box, if you give both 2nd and 3rd votes to members of that group. That's very close to how many votes we need to get Fillmore above Reagan. Clearly, this is an idea whose time has come. I notice we've got Nancy Reagan on the run as well now... Fillmore, Mrs. Fillmore, Madison, and Johnson, that's the winning ticket. Marion |

Arthur Dignified, tall, and handsome, with clean-shaven chin and side-whiskers, Chester A. Arthur "looked like a President." The son of a Baptist preacher who had emigrated from northern Ireland, Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont, in 1829. He was graduated from Union College in 1848, taught school, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in New York City. Early in the Civil War he served as Quartermaster General of the State of New York. President Grant in 1871 appointed him Collector of the Port of New York. Arthur effectively marshalled the thousand Customs House employees under his supervision on behalf of Roscoe Conkling's Stalwart Republican machine. Honorable in his personal life and his public career, Arthur nevertheless was a firm believer in the spoils system when it was coming under vehement attack from reformers. He insisted upon honest administration of the Customs House, but staffed it with more employees than it needed, retaining them for their merit as party workers rather than as Government officials. In 1878 President Hayes, attempting to reform the Customs House, ousted Arthur. Conkling and his followers tried to win redress by fighting for the renomination of Grant at the 1880 Republican Convention. Failing, they reluctantly accepted the nomination of Arthur for the Vice Presidency. During his brief tenure as Vice President, Arthur stood firmly beside Conkling in his patronage struggle against President Garfield. But when Arthur succeeded to the Presidency, he was eager to prove himself above machine politics. Avoiding old political friends, he became a man of fashion in his garb and associates, and often was seen with the elite of Washington, New York, and Newport. To the indignation of the Stalwart Republicans, the onetime Collector of the Port of New York became, as President, a champion of civil service reform. Public pressure, heightened by the assassination of Garfield, forced an unwieldy Congress to heed the President. In 1883 Congress passed the Pendleton Act, which established a bipartisan Civil Service Commission, forbade levying political assessments against officeholders, and provided for a "classified system" that made certain Government positions obtainable only through competitive written examinations. The system protected employees against removal for political reasons. Acting independently of party dogma, Arthur also tried to lower tariff rates so the Government would not be embarrassed by annual surpluses of revenue. Congress raised about as many rates as it trimmed, but Arthur signed the Tariff Act of 1883. Aggrieved Westerners and Southerners looked to the Democratic Party for redress, and the tariff began to emerge as a major political issue between the two parties. The Arthur Administration enacted the first general Federal immigration law. Arthur approved a measure in 1882 excluding paupers, criminals, and lunatics. Congress suspended Chinese immigration for ten years, later making the restriction permanent. Arthur demonstrated as President that he was above factions within the Republican Party, if indeed not above the party itself. Perhaps in part his reason was the well-kept secret he had known since a year after he succeeded to the Presidency, that he was suffering from a fatal kidney disease. He kept himself in the running for the Presidential nomination in 1884 in order not to appear that he feared defeat, but was not renominated, and died in 1886. Publisher Alexander K. McClure recalled, "No man ever entered the Presidency so profoundly and widely distrusted, and no one ever retired ... more generally respected." |
