Subject: Lyr Req: Caroline was a greyhound From: GUEST,Lyndi-loo Date: 25 Sep 04 - 01:43 PM Help! I've tried googling but can't find this one. A song about a greyhound called Caroline who was leading at a race when a black pudding supper landed on the track. the lines I know are "she never drank water, she only drank wine" and "Caroline she just stood there, wi her mouth fu' o' chips". The son originated in the West of Scotland and I believe The Corries used to sing it in concerts. Thanks Catters |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Caroline was a greyhound From: GUEST Date: 25 Sep 04 - 03:13 PM This was sung by Billy Connelly to the tune of 'Stewball' - I think that it would be on an early 'Humblebums' album if it was ever recorded. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Caroline was a greyhound From: GUEST Date: 25 Sep 04 - 03:51 PM Nope. No luck theer. I've tried the Humblebums and Billy Connolly solo discographies with no luck. THnakd for the suggestions, but keep them coming! Cheers Lynda |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Caroline was a greyhound From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 25 Sep 04 - 06:36 PM I believe the song is called "McGinty" and is on the CD Transatlantic years by Billy Connolly. If "Scabby Douglas" sees this message I think he has the words Kenny B |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Caroline was a greyhound From: Tannywheeler Date: 26 Sep 04 - 06:37 PM Obviously intended to go to the (P, P, M?? Limelighters??)version of "Stewball". Doesn't go to older tune/rhthmic pattern from Southern Black trad. A presentation of the latter may be found on the elsewhere-mentiioned "Goin' Down To Town" record album (I think). See thread on Hally Wood's version of "Mary Hamilton", posting by johnross. Par O Ds R Us. What fun. Tw |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Caroline was a greyhound From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Sep 04 - 09:38 AM The song is called MCGINTY and it was written by Billy Connolly, whose performance is on 3 albums: "Humble Beginnings: The Complete Transatlantic Recordings, 1969-74" Fabulus 6-CD box set #201, 2003. "Live" Fabulus CD #201/4, 2003. (This seems to be the same as number 4 of the 6 CDs in the box set.) "Transatlantic Years" Castle CD 209, 2003. --Information from allmusic, and I have listened to sound samples to confirm that it is the same song. The words I heard were somewhat different, however: ...Away up by Bellahouston And sometimes doon past the docks. Oh, she ran at White City And aa different tracks... The tune seems to be the same as STEWBALL as done by Peter, Paul & Mary, but Connolly sings it at a slow, mournful tempo. |
