slanty writing="these two sorta go together don't they jOhn?"

No, I know a dozen pro gamblers, only one of them [apart from myself] has been bankrupt, [less than 10 percent]!

I've given 6 horse tips on the main forum, they've all won!
I gave a tip to a friend via PM today, it also won.

I started the first ten obscure facts thread
I just turned 30 and feel relieved to have made it through my 20s
I want to be asleep right now
I bought a mandolin a year ago and haven't taught myself to play it yet
I sometimes vote Republican
I dropped a jar of pickles on my toe today and it's annoyingly painful
I have learned the hard way that the harder you work the more people will take you for granted
Social situations terrify me
I can't handle stress at all
One by one I am losing every friend I have ever cared about

Actually, jOhn, I have read your original post again, and you did not say which three years you were a professional gambler - that is why I, without that information available to me, said that I did not know your circumstances. If you managed to make a living from it, that's fine - wouldn't be my choice of a lifestyle, that's all. So why did you stop? (just curious - not trying to pick a fight or anything)

1. I knew Noel Edmonds when he was a mere strip of a lad.
2. I was at university with Victoria Wood.
3. I have curtsied to Princess Anne on stage at the Royal Albert Hall.
4. I went on a course in the laying-on-of-hands with Dorothy Tutin's daughter.
5. Michael Fish signed a copy of the BBC Weather Calendar for me in 1982.
6. A friend of mine peed in the gents next to Ronnie Cray.
7. I know which house the man who used to play Grant Mitchell in Eastenders used to live.
8. I worked with someone who lived opposite the man who created Basil Brush.
9. I worked with another someone who can just be seen peeping (not peeing) out of the window in the scene in Fawlty Towers where Basil beats the car with a bush.
10. As all these pathetic facts are true, and I find myself strangely proud of them, I wish to remain anonymous - I am also the "voice" behind Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni here on Mudcat and, much more recently, I was Secret Squirrel today on Sir jOhn's thread; on occasion, I have also been The Bard and Sherlock Holmes in threads. Not telling who I am - that is to remain in obscurity - as if I kid myself that anyone cares !

Eric, it sounds as though Guest N certainly HAS a life. As have I !
Come on, you're just jealous about his Princess Margaret and my Noel Edmonds connections, aren't you ? What if I were to tell you have I have a signed photograph of Millicent Martin, and I used to live next door to theatrical digs occupied by Patrick Ryecart who was in Dr. Who and who married the daughter of the Duke of Norfolk ? Or that the same friend of mine who peed next to Ronnie Cray also sat on Bob Monkhouse's lap (but not at the same time) ? All this is true. What do you have to say to THAT, eh ? Huh ?

10 obscure facts about my family.....

Reggie and Ronnie Kray were at school with my father-in-law. It's a good job they're no longer among us... you keep spelling their name wrong. They would have done their National Service together, but the Krays spent all their time on the trot or in the glasshouse.

Same father in law built kitchens for Delia Smith that can be seen in her books.

My brother in law helped pull a French photographer out of the wreck of 'The Rainbow Warrior' when they bombed it in Auckland Harbour.

My father drove for 50 years without ever taking a recognised driving test. He got his licence in 1945, courtesy of the Ministry of Defence - their idea of a test was being able to drive a 10ton lorry across a field without getting it stuck.

My sister once played a dead body on New Zealand hospital "drama" 'Shortland Street'.

My daughter was the youngest singer in the world record breaking longest singaround at Leigh on Sea festival 3 years ago.

Another brother in law has just climbed Mount Kilamanjaro.

My cousin is the 8th generation of our family to live in the same village. (Can you hear banjo music?)

My niece was the first of our family (9th generation) not to be born within 10 miles of that village.

Her sisters were the first to be born in a different hemisphere.

Another obscure fact about my family: My sister was an extra in Noble House while she lived in Hong Kong, and said Pierce Brosnan is a sweetie-pie and a joy to work with. (Actually by the time the cutting room got done with her, only her VOICE was actually IN the miniseries, but still.)

SO - to get back to the subject in hand: i.e. out-obscuring each other with true-but-totally-obscure information and (in my case, at least) D-list name-dropping! I am trying to out-obscure myself with every additional fact I provide.

Sorry about my misspelling of Kray, Liz.Thanks for pointing that out. One could get into serious trouble for something like that. Almost as much as my friend would have, had he missed his aim in the gents.

New fact: I saw Fatima Whitbread at our local post office last week. Now - who can top THAT one ?

I shook hands with Lenny the Lion and my sister got to kiss him

One of my more distant relatives beat Bobby Jones at golf

I have a top snooker break of 85, once played with Alex Higgins when he was practicing in a club in London and got mistaken for him once by a guy who was hitchhiking which is curious as I believe I have no resemblance to him and am not Irish

Used to drink with the editor of the Eagle comic who was later the sports editor of the Observer; also the writer of the Upstairs Downstairs theme music who also orchestrated an Al Stewart album;

Met Dennis Quilley backstage in his dressing room when appearing in a London theatre production and went for a meal with him at Beoty's in St Martins Lane

I am terrified of blood and take my hat off to people like eric who can give it.

I consider I have a very quiet normal life

I've got two more:

I went to school with Laura Linney - we graduated in the same class, and I had a part, briefly, in the school production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brody, in which she played, of course, Miss Jean Brody. I dropped out of the play as it interfered too much with my primary boarding school ocupation, hanging out in the butt room, smoking Lark cigarettes and playing guitar.

and...

I recently shot a coyote dead with one bullet to the forehead.

Wow, Guest N: Shaking paws with Lenny the Lion ! I am so jealous. That certainly beats my very tenuous brush with Basil. I WAS a lion once, though, in Pinocchio. Don't know how many obscurity points I score for that. Here goes: the woman playing Miss Cat in that show also had a non-speaking part playing a tart in the audience in the film "Shakespeare in Love." How's that ?

Oh, and Eating With the Possibly Rich and Famous: Not Dennis Quilley. But I did eat several meals with Bob Daws who was in Outside Edge and was the lead in the series about the taxi firm. Oh, and also ate with the man in the old insurance advert where he sang "Let's face the music and dance", who was also "Mr. Bennett" in Tony Hart's TV programme. And in around 1977 I stayed in a flat in London that was visited by a lady who had a part in the TV drama series "A Horseman Riding By." My, my, a star-studded life. I have more gems ;) Trying very hard to delve to the most obscure ones, but perhaps enough already.

2. I am the second youngest of 13 children, though #1 overall.

3. 7 of my 8 brothers were baptized with the first name Joseph.

4. I once fixed the computer of the Governor-General of Canada.

5. I won a Hallowe'en costume two years in a row with the same outfit (Drew Carey)

8. I was measured hitting a decibel level of 106, from 10ft away from the sound meter.

9. Toulouse Cruise is the name of my duo, and it is a homonym for "Two Loose Screws". It has nothing to do with France, or an impressionist painter, or an album by the Doobie Brothers.

10. I was lying about the new socks.

1. Every man I ever had more than 2 dates with emotionally abused me, and I wasn't aware of that until recently. Everyone else in my world was aware of it, however, all these years.

2. Unlike Sorcha, I have been fortunate to find one man whose penis is user-friendly, finally, at age 51.

3. I love to write in colorful, descriptive, imaginative, metaphorical language.

4. My father went to Boston Latin High School and was an expert in Latin and Greek. But he didn't go to college and instead, rode freight trains during the 1930's and became a radical rabble-rouser in a million ways, finally making a lot of money as a liquor salesman.

5. My mother was a pyschiatric social worker for the desperately poor and disenfranchised. One the patients in the clinic in which she worked stabbed her to death in her office in 1962. I was 9 and my brother was 12. Our family almost disintegrated at that time.

6. My stepmother is also a social worker. She was boxer Floyd Patterson's social worker when he was a teenager in an institution in New York City. She is a holocaust survivor and while she was not in a concentration camp, she is considered a holocaust survivor because she born and raised in Vienna and was there and survived Kristallnacht, in 1938.

7. I always wanted to be a poet and/or an itinerant folksinger, but I never had the moxy.

8. Never thought I would have my own child, but did, at age 42, and he is joy of my life.

9. Can't believe I am driving a car. I learned to drive when I was 50.

10. Can't believe I recently divorced. I thought when I got married for the first time at age 38, I knew enough about this stuff to ensure a lasting partnership. I was wrong.

Wow, Guest N: Shaking paws with Lenny the Lion ! I am so jealous.

I saved that one just in case :) It was the BIG one

Not surprisingly most of these people are not in touch with me any longer.

We live such little lives etc etc -

Could I just say that the least obscure fact about me is that my wife is the best person in the world who makes my life and also sings like an angel - though she doesn't always know either. All the other stuff was true but pales into insignificance against that.

Miss T - come sing with joy and pleasure with us one day. I sense I would enjoy it enormously.

"I should have opened a new thread with an obscure title rather than posting on this thread and ruining what was fun for the others."

If I had a dollar for every time I have said something like that . . . .

Skipy - re your flying in a Lancaster - I understood there were still 2 flying 'ships' (that's what they call'em apparently) - one in the UK and one in Canada. Which one did you fly in? (Have to speak with RAF HQ Strike Command in my job occasionally, which is where I got the info about there being two)

I didn't MEAN to get bitten by so many dogs. I was the chief Dogcatcher for Anchorage for a number of years. Whenever an especially aggressive dog was threatening someone, I was the sacrificial body that was sent in to catch it.

It was a very depressing job at times. I would start off each morning with a cup of coffee in one hand and a syringe of "doggy death" pentathol in the other. For about 4 years, my day would begin by killing 30 or 40 dogs and cats. During the time I had this job, I never got my guitar out to play.

Alaska Mike! What a story!

Poor man, poor animals.

At least you had the choice to change your job.

Therefore if we should ever meet...

I won't bite you.

The Meatpuppets are (or were, i'm not quite sure) an obscure but unfathomably brilliant band. Nirvana covered a couple of their songs on unplugged in New York.

I gave ten in the last thread, but will give ten more here.

1. My grandmother ten generations back (on my mom's side) was Martha Allen Carrier, who was hanged as a witch in the hysteria in Andover and Salem. Her husband, Thomas Carrier, my grandfather ten generations back, was over 7' tall. More interesting facts about them are at this web site: Click here
"A little background on Thomas MORGAN aka CARRIER. Thomas was born about 1626 in Wales. There is evidence that he served in the Royal Army. Some have reported that Thomas, said to be over 7 feet tall, was one of the two regicides who, while disguised by frock and visor, appeared upon the scaffold before Whitehall and executed Charles I. Thomas emigrated in 1655 to Cambridge Mass. The hostility with which Thomas and his family were treated in Mass. lends color to the tradition that he was connected with the Royal Army, but discredits the fact that he was the Executioner of Charles I."

2. My gx10mother Martha Carrier was the great great grand daughter of Henry Ingalls, borh in 1480, also an ancestor of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the American author.

3. I have a letter and pressed fern leaf sent to me from Yoko Ono when I was in college. I had asked for a catalog of one of her shows that was opening called "Fly" and as the catalog was late, I received a letter in apology with a fern leaf enclosed.

4. I didn't know my first name until I entered kindergarten. My family called me by my middle name, Colleen, and I didn't know my first name is Alice until I started school. (But I do use the name I was born with!)

5. My first entrepreneurial effort was a nightcrawler (fish bait) business that I started in the fifth grade. I made my own electric shocker to gather nightcrawlers (a wonder I didn't electrocute myself).
It was my source of spending money for several summers.

6. I have a collection of old cameras - small bellows cameras, old brownies, unusual old brands and movie cameras.

7. I am very allergic to feathers. I have to stay away from feather bedding, feather dusters, etc.

8. My mentor in college was Bob DeWeese, one of the main characters of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".

9. I have two scars on my chin from separate childhood accidents. They are fairly noticeable, a half inch long, but of all the people in my lifetime that I've met, only one person has asked me about the scars.

10. My son needs the computer, so I can't finish this one!!!!!!!

A great thread! This is what makes the Muddie so much fun.

Don't really have any amazing things to share, but here are some things I like.

1. Once seen what I thought was a falling star, but learned over 20 years later it was something else.

2. Found the secret of the universe, but I forgot where I put it!

3. Dogs always dance when I play my Banjo but they like to sing if I try to fiddle.

4. Once fixed an old motorcyle which was scrap and when I had it like new, sold it to a dealer for next to nothing.

5. Later got an old motorcycle for 40 quid and loved it so much I could not stop driving it. It was greasy and smelly.

6. I'm a an incurable whistler! I doodle with whistling and sometimes when people are annoyed by it I don't realize I am doing it!

7. I smoked heavily for 40 years and even though I grew up in a smokey home, one day after reading what second-hand smoke did to non-smokers, I quit cold turkey and never smoked since.

8. Fooling about with numbers I found a way to find the cube root of any number, and later lost the page, then could not remember how I did it!

9. Can't stand cats, as long as they stay away from me I'm fine; but, cats always try to get frienly with me so my life can become quite wierd at times.

10. I can draw real good but I have to stop because I get too involved with it.

13-- Dogs depress me. I think it's because people don't deserve that kind of unconditional love. I want to say, Spot, you could do a lot better. Plenty of fish in the sea. Dog-owners piss me off because they think nothing of setting loose their lovable pit-bull at a children's playground.

14. With two small children climbing me, I once told a stranger that I would kill his fucking dog in a just a moment and then beat him with the carcass.

15. I was a paperboy, and The Paperboy is one of my favorite children's books.

16. I think Blair Witch 2 is one of the most awful pitiful unschooled and crass rip-off less-than-uninspired things I've ever seen, but I can't manage to think less of Peg, who seems so utterly cool, for having written a scene of it.

17. I've now watched exactly one ball game in my life.

Fred - I hated paperboys. Everyday I had to pass the paper shack where they stood around rolling their papers for delivery. They were a few years older and I had to endure their verbal abuse and their taunts, on a daily basis. There was no other route to my house.

Looking back, I sometimes wonder if I was just scared of teen-agers and whether or not it may have been my imagination.

Since you have experience in the field, do you think it happened or was I just paranoid?

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you.
