We ought to wait until the end of Ramadan and then say 'Eid Mubarak' as then the Muslims will break the fast and have a big party.

As far as I know, during Ramadan, Muslims do not allow anything, including water, to pass their lips during daylight hours. When Ramadan falls in the summer, "breakfast" can be around 3.30am and the next meal (and drink) near 10pm! Exceptions are for children and the sick. Everyone else is expected to observe the rules.

Makes giving up sweets for Lent seem a bit tame.

I've got a feeling the fireworks are probably to do with the Hindu festival of light (Diwalli - not sure of spelling) which currently falls around the same time as Ramadan.

Peace

Hi Wolfgang, I asked a Moslem work-mate this some years ago.
Apparently, some will follow the "timings" from one of the Holy Cities (Usually Mecca).
Some find this unacceptable, and just can't live too far from the equator.

Thanks, Crazy Eddie, my guess was that idea with taking the timing from Mecca, but I didn't know that's why I asked. And I'm not going to ask what a Muslim in a space lab would do, I just trust my guess.

I would guess the fireworks are to do with Diwali rather than ramadan though it may possibly be to do with some oiks of whatever belief deciding that setting them off whenever is fun!

During Ramadan good muslims are not allowed to eat between sunrise and sunset and they break their fast usually with dates as the first food. Children and the sick are excluded but many still observe the fast - we have children as young as 5 in our schoool who are fasting!

The money that would be spent on food during the day is collected and given to the mosque for distribution to the poor. Eid is a bit like our Xmas with lots of food parties and cards we usually recieve Eid presents and from the moslem staff that work with us
If memory serve me correctly it is because Mohammed (PBUH) like Moses had a period of time without food. Fasting at Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam and you must do it to be considered a good moslem

Hard to respect those that blow themselves up on a bus and cut off prisoner's heads on video in the name of Allah because they just can't seem to get their point across any other way, is it?

You obviously respect that, right?

and don't give me that shit about that they were driven to it.

It's bullshit.

Martin, there are many millions of Muslims who do not blow themselves up, and who would never consider doing so, and only a pretty small handful who do. To judge all members of a group based on the actions of only a small number of the group is bigotry. Shall we always judge all of a particular group of people based on the actions of only a few of them? If we do that, no group of people is safe from being judged.

To respectfully extend one's good wishes to someone of the Muslim faith in the context of one of their important holy days in no way shows approval for the actions of the most extreme and criminal elements of that group.

Maybe true.

But I do not see any other group this barbaric in the name of a god. It may be a small portion, but a small portion of millions of them is still well into the thousands.

I think there is room for some disagreement in your first sentance of your 19 Oct 04 - 04:05 PM post, and I do disagree with it.

But it is no more appropriate for us to judge all Muslims by the actions of a few of their members than it is for us to judge all members of any other group by the actions of a some of their members. And all groups have some members who commit criminal acts.

To change the subject, I think travelers, children, military on active duty are also exempt from the restrictions of Ramadan.

Mr Gibson,
I don't admire Islam either. Remember, though, that the vast majority of the people who follow it are just people. One of the guys at the corner store is devout. He claims that nothing is mandatory other than the five pillars. I can live with that easily.

Arabic lesson for the day:

"Mubarak" means blessed. "Mabrook" means congratulations.

As Mrs. Duck said, you say "Eid Mubarak" (Blessed Feast!) at the end of Ramadan, not during. "Ramadan Mubarak" makes sense as a mid-Ramadan greeting but I can't remember using it.

What is said a lot is "Kul sana wa anta tayib" (to a man) or "Kul sana wa anti tayeeba" (to a woman). It means roughly "May you be well every year", and is an all-purpose greeting you can use for any Muslim or Christian holiday or on someone's birthday.

Interesting points of view on the thread.
I dont know many of us that support terrorism Dont believe I support the 'holy war' in Ireland either. Its not my religion either but then nor is Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism etc etc. but I do work with a lot of Moslems who are equally outraged at the atrocities in Iraq done in the name of Islam.

Islam preaches peace and care for others a bit like Christianity does. Unfortuantely a few bad apples do spoil the barrel - whichever barrel you might be looking in and I am afraid this is what breed bigotry and racism. Its a shame people from what ever religion cannot practice what they preach. No deaths caused in the name of religion can be good.

On a nicer note happy Diwali for this weekend, happy halloween for all pagans and witches amongst us Happy Eid for November 15th 16th Happy Thanksgiving for whatever date in Novemeber that is and Happy St Nicolas Day etc etc etc etc Sorry to anyone I have forgotten

They may be outraged, but they are not speaking out, in fear of their own lives.

Again, I'll say that the "few bad apples" concept is ridiculously misleading. A few bad apples when you have millions obviously equate to tens of thousands bad apples.

If there were 100 million Muslimes and I suspect that is on the low side, a 5% bad apple ratio still equates to 5 Million bad apples.

Bad and rotten, in the name of Allah.

Interesting point, Martin. Don't get me wrong here - I'm not disagreeing (oddly enough!) because terrorism is so wrong in so many ways that anyone who supports it must indeed be a fool!

Extrapolating your example of 5% bad apples. As at 07/01/05 we had a world population of 6,446,131,400. That means that, in the world, there are 322,306,570 bad apples! Of the 2 billion Chistians we have 100 million bad apples. Your estimate of Islam was indeed low. Of the 1.3 billion there are 65 million fast becoming cider. Amongst the 900 million Hindus there are 45 million with maggots! Of the 14 Million Jews we have a total soggy count of a mere 700K!

I have said before and I will say it again. There are good and bad people of all faiths, colours and nationalities. It is very unfortunate that the bad 'uns so often are the leaders and the most outspoken:-( This does seem to be the case with Islam at the moment but is it realy or is it our western media propaganda machine working particularly well? I suspect the latter but do not really know:-(

One thing that the statistics could be used to show though - The bad apples bowing to Allah outnumber the ones wailing to Yahweh by almost 100 to one! I wonder why they keep saying they need to use terrorist tactics because they are in a minority...

(OK, OK, I know in Palestine it may be different but surely we are a global village now!)

Here's another interesting (to me anyway!) statistic about the world major religion figures. Christiaity, just past the 2k mark in years, has 2 Billion followers, or 1 billion per thousand years. Islam has 1.3 billion followers in year 1420, or just over 900 Million per thousand years. Is this because Christianity is more popular or because the Christian missionaries were more effective?

Other religions? I dunno! Phew! I have given you some figures - work out the rest for yourself:-)

Anyhow,

Happy whatever you are celebrating to all peaceful people of all races, colours and creeds. But only if you want it to be happy;-)

Cheers

How do the Egyptians call a cowshed?
Mubarak    (Mu is pronounced Moo in German)

is a very unPC German joke about the president of Egypt. One of a long series of jokes about foreign politicians with suitable names.
(I could also tell you what we made out of 'Kennedy' which is pronounced exactly as a Bavarian would say: 'I know you' in German, but that would go too far in this peaceful thread)

Dave the Gnome, glad I got some thinking juices churning. I figured that I was way off on my Muslim count. But maybe i was off or low also on my 5% bad apple count. What if it's 10, 20, or even 50 %?

Staggering.

Our meager 14 million, of which there for sure are some bad apples, though I wouldn't say anywhere near 5%, don't make headlines by blowing ourselves up, cutting off our enemy's heads, and live for the most part in an educated, civil lifestyle, has to make one wonder why, as a people, we are so successful, when we are so few.

Where does this 5% guestimate of "bad apples" amongst Muslims come from? Did you just make it up off the top of your head? If you're going to get all scientific and numerical, you need to be working with some legitimate numbers.

My guess would be closer to .001%.

I dunno, Carol. Perhaps Martin is way off but 1 in 20 may not be too far out for any societies 'Bad Apple Count'. Just off the top of my head I can think of around 20 people I know realy well. There are many others that I know of course but nowhere near as well as these 20. OK so far?

Out of the 20 I can think of 10 who would give me or anyone the shirt off their back at the drop of a hat. Of the remaining 10 perhaps 6 or 7 would do the same if push came to shove. The remainder has at least one seriously disturbed racist, one with known criminal tendancies and one who would support one of the others regardless of what they had done! Needless to say I now try to avoid these latter ones but they were friends at one time. So, out of this small sample there is 15% who may be termed 'Bad Apples':-(

There is, of course, no justification for racism or terrorism and I do think Martins reasoning gets a little flawed when tarring all Muslems with the same brush. I know he would not like it if I said all people in Chicago are drunken beggars because some of the people I spoke to in Chicago were drunkards, drug addicts and begging for money on the street! No more than, based on my experience above, I would like anyone to say my circle of friends are all criminals and racists, even though 15% of them may well be!

The only way forward on this is for everyone to forget what they 'know' about other people and go and find out the truth for themselves. I am often guilty of stereotyping others myself (just because I know all Yorkshiremen are tight gits...;-) ) but stereotyping can become very dangerous indeed. Anyone who really belives all Muslems are terrorists would do well to study the rise of the New Socialist Party in 1930s Europe. They told their followers that all Jews were scheming, money grabbers out to topple the governments of the day. There may well have been 5% of the Jewish population who were 'Bad Apples'. But look what then happened to the other 95%...

It may seem like I am arguing against myself here or being contrary for 'effect'. I am not, honestly! While I do not think Martin is right with some of his comments and conclusions I cannot honestly say he is wrong about a 5% BA Count. What people do about that count in ALL societies is the important bit.

I choose to ignore it and concentrate on the 95% full of vitamins, good for your teeth ones. If everyone did the same we may eventualy see a change in the world:-)

Cheers

Sorry - on re-reading about 'choosing to ignore the bad ones' it sounds like I meant ignore the terrorists etc. I don't. I mean ignore them in your views of the race/creed/nation as a whole. They may be many, as Martin suggests, but they are still a small part of the whole. Deal with them in your own way but don't for heavens sake treat all the people of a particular type as thugs just because a few are. Following that through to its logical conclusion we can only decide that because a small portion of the human race are bad we need to wipe out the lot:-(

Or just because a small portion of Martins posts are a little insulting he isn't realy a nice guy? ;-)

You, however, do seem to be (and should be) ashamed of being a racist, a misogynist, and (tellingly) a homophobe. Why else would you be so defensive when people point this out? I mean, is this what your parents dreamed you'd amount to? Would they be proud that you've become some wizened, elderly troll spewing vulgarities and bizzaro-Nazi style ravings on an online forum?

As usual, simple vulgarity and baseless claims. (And more obsessive talk of me as a giant penis. Hmmmm...) How am I a "Jew hat(er)," again? Yeah, didn't think so. Nice try, racist. You didn't even attempt to deny my claims. Hell, you couldn't even respond without yet another racist slur. You're priceless. :)

I've noticed that when threads are posted to wish people of other religions, including the Jewish religion, greetings on their holidays, they are able to do it without encountering the kind of hate that has been brought to this thread by Martin and some guests. The fastest growing form of racism and/or bigotry in the US, and probably the UK, and certainly here in the Mudcat, is racism and/or bigotry against Muslims and Arabs. And the really sad part is that we all know that racism and/or bigotry against Jews is wrong. But many people seem to think that racism and/or bigotry against Muslims and Arabs is perfectly ok.

Somebody called my attention to this thread. It started off as a nice thread, and then was hijacked by you-know-who. I don't really know what to do with it, since the racist horseshit is so tightly interwoven with some thoughtful comments.

It would be nice if people would just refuse to respond to trolls, but that seems to happen rarely around here. There's always some Mudcatter who will take the bait.

I've been driving through the Bible Belt this week, passing dozens of churches with pithy sayings on their signboards by the road. One said, "The greatest act of courage is to ignore an insult."
Makes sense.

Anyhow, I guess I'll leave this thread unedited, for now. Please note that Mudcat does not "tolerate" this sort of racism - we just sometimes don't know what to do with it. Martin, those are people you're making those remarks about, people with kids and homes and moral values and all that good stuff that good people have. Certainly, some Muslims are terrorists. So are some Republicans.

So, cut out the racism. It's not cute.

I dont know any of the people involved in this thread personally - possibly have met JOhn from Hull who started the thread at Beverley or the like so when it started to 'turn' into a slanging match I thought maybe it was mates having a go for fun. I have done this on many another thread - Joe obviously from what you have said this is not the case. It saddens me that people whose religions share the same prophets( Jew , Chistian and Moslem) cannot find good things to talk about or to put their points over without personal base abuse. No wonder people say never talk about religion or politics and no wonder the centuries have seen these three major religions being the cause of many a violent outburst - whether that being a holy war or a terroist act. Jews have persecuted christians and moslems, Christians have persecuted Moslems and Jews and Moslems jews and Christians. And a lot of other religions have joined in this religious intolerance over the centuries. In my book that makes them all as bad as one another but Martin you are right in the fact that at this moment in time, because of the coverage in the news a lot of people do regard all Moslems as terrorists I am just glad that I know people from all these religions and others and know that you cant tar everyone with the same brush!

by the way - the bad apple scale was very interesting. its a bit like lies damned lies and statistics - the more you have the bigger number 'a few' means but they are still just 'a few. Its the half full half empty syndrome - if 5% are bad then 95% are good!

I always thought that Islam was the most widespread religion. Seems that Christianity is at 33% and Islam is at 20%. Christianity is, however, dropping and Islam is rising. Hmmmm...

So if we are talking about democracy and the New World Order why is America trying to liberate the Middle East?

Seems that in a democracy, the majority of the people in the Middle East would want Muslim leaders not an invasive Christian Army.

And Martin - If we're talking about Democracy, where does Israel stand in the New World Order? I'd think that Israel would want to get back to the negotiating table real quick.

Gee dianavan, spoken with some true anti-semitic undertones. I don't speak for Israel, so why do you ask me? My guess is that Israel does not negotiate with terrorists.

Joe Offer, there has been numerous anti-semitism comments here on this forum. Many of them have been more than tolerated.

BTW, is Islam a race? Or perhaps a way of life that has been hijacked by terrorism?
I don't go looking for them, but when I find anti-Semitic messages, I certainly do delete them. I have a special dislike for anti-Semitism. No, we don't "tolerate" any kind of bigotry here. We're not able or willing to screen every message and delete every hint of racism, but we certainly don't like or tolerate racism.

You're right, Martin: One can find tons, TONS, of anti-Judaic (screw that imprecise "anti-Semitism") comments here on this forum. But only if, like you, one considers any criticism of Israel to be "anti-Semitic." Needless to say, that's ridiculous. Criticising the actions of a state (or, in my case, opposing the existence of a state) isn't the same thing as hating the people of that state. It's not racist, not anti-Judaic. I challenge you to find even one statement by an Israel critic on Mudcat that expresses hatred for Jews. Try.

Yeah, then you'll say "But, but Alan Dershowitz says so in his very popular book! And he's RICH, and lives in a big house in the suburbs!!! How much do YOU make, LePus Rex the Wonderhorse? Also, THE HOLOCAUST!!!" Follow it up with a reference or twelve to anuses, and that'll be it, your argument. Wow.

Your comments about Arabs and Muslims, on the other hand, are completely fucking racist. You compare them to vermin, call them dirty, towel-heads, and worse. Look at this thread, which jOhn intended to be a friendly "seasons greetings" to Muslims. It was that, as well as an interesting discussion of Ramadan traditions, until you chimed in with "How about, 'strap on some dynamite, board a bus, say hello to the 70 virgins for me, and by the way, have a happy, happy Ramadan.'" And you're not a bigot? What would you say if someone ruined a "Have a Nice Passover" thread with a post that read "How about, 'go pretend the Holocaust actually happened, snort up the life savings of a good Christian family with your big nose, say hello to seven Jew bankers for me, and by the way, have a happy, happy Passover.'" Would that be racist? Duh.

Predictably, when people rightly call you a "racist" or a "bigot," you moderate your message, as if unaware that your previous statements are still available to read, and claim you're being persecuted by the "politically correct" "Jew haters" for "telling it like it is." Which is the universal lament of the mainstream racist. Replace "PC Jew haters" with "PC Nigger lovers," and *poof*, you're a neo-Nazi.

It is good to see you've finally learned to spell "semitism," though. And you're welcome for the spelling lessons.

I reiterate. You are well known as one of biggest Jew haters here. You hypocrite Nazi. Yes, I'll take Alan Dershowitz's educated wisdom to your peon and stupidly hippie philosophy any time over yours. You show your true moronic colors when you knock his big house in the suburbs. So fucking what! People earn money. You resent that because you don't have the smarts or the personality to. So you knock intelligent, educated people who live in the suburbs because you are obviously a loser in life.
