Never mind who wins or who you like. There are other threads for that. Is something going on that this one and the last are so close?
The moon always shows the same face to us because of the years things have settled down that way, the energy exchange between the earth and the moon caused by tidal forces has brought them into line like this. It wouldnt happen to two solid bodies, apparently, you need the water sloshing round to make the energy exchange.
Have the two parties inadvertently synchronized their levels of support by the expenditure on polls, focus groups, TV ads etc etc? They exchange information so skilfully, due to the vast expenditure of money, that they automatically adjust to each other, and if one creeps ahead the other adjusts and catches up. Perhaps a party could only seriously get a big distance ahead by deliberately uncoupling itself from this process of mutual interaction? I wonder who is working on this sort of thing, it must be occurring to politicians. Anybody familiar with any discussions on these lines?

I believe you're on to something greg. In fact I have seen the same thing occurring in my workplace. There seems to be a great deal of 'polarization' happening. Its split almost down the middle. This is creating alot of conflict and dichord. What to do?

I think you're right. One or the other must somehow disengage.

...or perhaps one side will splinter, or break into fragments.

Morning Greg,
If Mr Bush wins this election, I shall simply not log into mudcat for a couple of weeks, because the gnashing of teeth is going to take up every available BS thread.
Pity you wont be up for this months Hull Fklock Club as we have the very lovely bluesman King Rollo with us this thursday.
Flamenco, the true path! In green!

I know this is years later, but it seems to be a good fit for this thread:

How 'bout them tides?!

(Newser) – Apparently, Bill O'Reilly has never heard of the moon. In a debate Tuesday with Dave Silverman, head of the American Atheist group behind this, the Fox host tried to prove the existence of God by citing the unknowable mysteries of the tides. "I'll tell you why [religion is] not a scam, in my opinion," he told Silverman. "Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can't explain that. You can't explain why the tide goes in."

Silverman looked stunned. "Tide goes in, tide goes out?" he stuttered.

O'Reilly pressed on. "The water, the tide—it comes in and it goes out. It always goes in, then it goes out. … You can't explain that. You can't explain it."

Of course, Raw Story points out, people who passed high school science might tell you that tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon as it orbits the earth.

But Silverman had a better response: "Maybe it's Thor up on Mount Olympus who's making the tides go in and out."

You mean King Canute wasted his energy? All he had to do was wait for God to "sweep away the tides"? ...ah, well...he didn't have Bill O'Reilly to set him straight.

I think he thinks he knows

I also just got an email to sign a letter to President Obama asking him to NOT give O'Reilly an interview during the Super Bowl. I can understand why as it lends legitimacy to such an idiot, but on the other hand, think of that captive audience...that's a big part of advert dollars it's hard to say no to, esp. for a politician and communicator such as Obama.

I saw that on the Daily Show! Jon Stewart assembled several video clips of O'Reilly using the same "argument"--if you can call it that--with several different guests. One can only gape. It makes no sense. The tides prove the existence of God? How is that logical? Without God, nothing would follow a predictable pattern? Everything would be random? Well, if somebody wants to believe that, let them go ahead. I have no objection. But it's a far cry from believing in a God that regulates the tides, to believing in a God that requires us to outlaw abortion, pray in public schools, outlaw gay marriage, etc., or whatever the religious right wants these days. I won't waste my breath opposing this silliness.

Surely there must be a good children's guide to how the moon influences the tide that would fit in a pocket? It would be quite nice to have it in ready to hand to O'Reilly next time he raises this nonsense.

It's all about gravity. Gravity is a strange force of attraction that pulls two (or more) things together.

The earth's gravity pulls us down and the muscles of our legs hold us up. If you jump up the earth's gravity pulls you down again.

As the moon passes over the sea, 1/4 of a million miles away, it pulls the sea up a bit. Hence a high tide. Will that do for a start?
