There is a strong, worldwide anti-American sentiment, the above post is a diatribe I have heard time and time again. I personally don't believe that words needed to be more phonetic, I like the quirks of english spelling. As for all the other points, well I could say the same to be true for this country, I think most countries insulate themselves against the world, perhaps to a greater degree in the states but. There ARE large numbers of thinking people who DO realise that there is a world out there!, please don't group them with ignorants and leader who represents a little over half of the voting population.

Well America, you've had your little joke and elected him again. It's time to face the consequences...
To the citizens of the United States of America :-

In the light of your failure to elect a proper President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchial duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new prime minister (The Right Horrible Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour', skipping the letter 'U' is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee' and the suffix "ize" will be replaced by the suffix "ise". You will learn that the suffix 'burgh is pronounced 'burra' e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to respell Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you can't cope with correct pronunciation. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed". There will be no more 'bleeps' in the Jerry Springer show. If you're not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn't have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won't have to use bad language as often.

2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of "-ize".

3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. English accents are not limited to Cockney, upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents - Scottish dramas such as "Taggart" will no longer be broadcast with subtitles. While we're talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is "Devon". If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become "shires" e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.

4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors to play English characters. British sit-coms such as "Men Behaving Badly" or "Red Dwarf" will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.

5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through.

6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called "rounders" which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.

7. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don't believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2nd will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called "Indecisive Day".

9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren't even French, they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called "crisps". Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.

11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.

12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer", and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as "Lager".

The substances formerly known as "American Beer" will henceforth be referred to as "Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine", with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as "Weak Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine". This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen, Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.

13. From December 1st the UK will harmonise petrol (or "Gasoline" as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st 2005) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, adopt UK petrol prices (roughly $6/US gallon - get used to it).

14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy.

Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776).

Thank you for your cooperation.

"Now a second question; How many terrorist acts have we suffered in the US after 9/11?"

I always like that question. No attacks, hardly. Maybe a little anthrax, but Bush has kept most of us safe. And he's kept us safe from man-eating tigers; we haven't had any of them in the yard since 9/11. And no Venusian Slime-People, he's kept them away.

I thought he had kept us protected from Flying Monkeys, but Bobert and brucie tell me that we were indeed attacked by them. I must have slept through it.

But 3 out of four ain't bad.

You could find any number of ordinary people in most countries in the World today who have the same opinions as I do, but you won't hear about it on your controlled American media. I am not interested in soft-pedaling my real opinions on this forum. You guys need the shock of hearing something different to snap you out of your dreamworld.

I am no danger to you whatsoever, but Ashcroft is. That's what's so sad about it.

Sorry to be meanyboots, but we're not talking about letting your opinion be influenced by a poll, which I agree is dumb. We're talking about an exit poll, which is different. All you're asking is who the person voted for, and the only reason is to find out who they voted for. It's the simplest kind of poll, is usually very accurate, and is not "crap" at all.

It IS possible that early voting could have affected these polls...but early voters could easily have been included. I don't know if they were or not, but that would be one question to ask. If they were not asked, the next step would be to look at the early votes and see if they heavily favored Bush. If so, that could explain the discrepancy. If not, it could not explain the discrepancy, and other explanations should be looked for. But someone should actually DO this, not just speculate about it.

From: Kim C

Nerd, there's no need to be a meanyboots. What I said about seeing it on TV once was meant to be humorous.

I actually work with statistics in my job for the purposes of grant reports. I have Statistics for Dummies on my desk. I have actually read it. I'm not an expert in numbers, but I am not completely ignorant either. The one thing I am certain of is that statistics are easy to manipulate. I think everyone knows that.

I can only speak for myself, but I use the expression "pretty" or "pretty much" out of politeness, to avoid seeming like a total bitch. Obviously, that is unnecessary. So I'll say it bluntly:

Polls are crap. Everyone knows it. People who actually allow themselves to be influenced by the opinion of a total stranger, especially regarding a matter as important as electing a President, have their heads firmly up their asses. I do not trust polls on general principle, and "usually accurate" exit polls are no exception.

I voted early and did not rely on any poll of public opinion to help me make my decision. I visited the websites of both Bush and Kerry, and the Libertarian party, and carefully read each candidate's platform. I watched the news. I paid attention to what they were saying, and what they didn't say. I got information. Only then did I make a decision about who I wanted to vote for. Polls were not a factor.

Now then - early voting. How possible is it that the number of people who voted early across the US might have skewed the exit polls, considering they wouldn't have been included?

KimC,

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that polls are pretty much crap, no matter how you slice them. Pollsters frequently ask questions a certain way to ensure they get a certain answer. Or at least that's what I saw on the news once.

It's pretty common knowledge that when you have to qualify pretty much every clause with a pretty vague qualifier like "pretty," you pretty likely don't know what you're talking about.

Also, when you base your opinion about a set of complex theoretical and practical issues on something you once saw on TV you're in trouble.

Some polls are accurate, others are not. But "pretty much crap no matter how you slice them" is simply a value judgment with no objective meaning.

The question asked in an exit poll is "whom did you vote for?" How can you ask that in a certain way to get a certain answer? I suppose you could say "did you vote for KERRY or for bush?" but that would probably not affect the response.

Exit polls are usually very accurate, as I said, and this time they were not. To resist finding out why is

1) lazy
2) incurious
3)convenient if you support Bush's agenda.

That's the point exactly, DougR. You didn't read my post. If you wanted to Jimmy the exit polls to help Bush you would report Kerry winning. That would suppress the Kerry vote and increase the Bush vote as people used the polls to decide whether their vote was needed.

I don't think your analysis is accurate either. I do think you're right that the left wing does not represent American values, but neither does the right wing. What is winning for Bush right now is message more than substance. There are many "moral values" that do not involve the genitalia, but they are never invoked in campaigns...Bush and the Republicans have successfully made "moral values" code for marital fidelity, heterosexuality, and opposition to abortion, when it could just as well mean other things. The Democrats need to articulate a message that is simple but powerful and that unifies its grand themes.

Slate has a good suggestion!

Doug, you are right, but since I am obviously ignorant about statistics, I see a 51/49% division as being pretty close, although in the scheme of things, that 2% counts for MILLIONS of votes. Of course, I could be wrong, because I can't count.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that polls are pretty much crap, no matter how you slice them. Pollsters frequently ask questions a certain way to ensure they get a certain answer. Or at least that's what I saw on the news once.

Anyhow, the fact of the matter is that Bush won. He won because more people voted for him than the other guy. More people voted for him than the other guy, because more people wanted him to be President, for whatever reason.

Now then... we can continue to harp about it, and foster divisiveness, or we can go forward and foster unity. The choice is ours.

GUEST The progressive left DID rise to the occasion! One thing neither party can be faulted for is NOT getting out the vote. It has always seemed queer to me that the progressive left appears to be under the impression that their POV ACTUALLY represents the thinking and belief of the majority in the U. S. Even after losing elections! That simply isn't true. If it were, John Kerry would be the president elect. Assuming that the progressive left owns the franchise on education and knowledge is, IMO, pure lunacy.

Kim: I rarely disagree with your postings, but describing Bush's margin of victory as small or thin simply is not the case. Bush won decisevely, both the Popular vote, AND the Electorial College.

Many Mudcatters spent the last four years proclaiming that Gore ACTUALLY won the election in 2000 because he won the popular vote. Well, George Bush just got more popular votes than any other person ever elected president of the United States, including Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan. Why do you suppose that is? IMO it is because more people approve of his leadership than disapprove. The result of the election is proof of that.

I believe that the only way for the progressive left to make a real impact on American politics is to establish a third party. The Democrats, I believe, are smart enough to realize that if they are ever going to regain power, they are going to have to cut the progressive left loose to fend for itself. The Democratic Party will get tired of being used by the "lefties" who promote a philosophy that has the same chance of succeeding with the American people, as does the proverbial snowball in hell.

And Nerd: If the exit polls were jimmied for Bush, why did the early reports favor Kerry so heavily? It appeared for a few hours after the first exit polls were reported that Kerry was going to sweep the election! There have been suggestions that these early reports be investigated, perhaps even by the Congress. I doubt that will happen, but I'll bet that the pool of media networks that paid for will do so.

Obama is already being considered for president in 2008 and he has not spend one day in office yet.    Maybe we should wait to see how he governs before annointing him president.

No- that would be much too radical an idea.

I wonder how people feel who supported Nader/Kucinich/Dean in principle, but voted for Kerry as pragmatists?   They sold out and still lost.    Seems like a bittle pill to me.

The only way the exit polls could match the machine tallies is if EVERY single person who voted was polled EVERY single time. Nobody polled me.

And besides, we all know how biased "polls" can be.

KimC, you are wrong and this post displays stunning ignorance of statistics. Exit polls will match machine tallies if the same PERCENTAGE of people went for each candidate among the polling sample as among the voters. This is usually pretty easy to achieve. Because the order of voters, the willingness of voters to disclose their votes, and other things that affect the outcome of exit polls, are usually random, and other factors (number registered to each party) are known and can be controlled for, exit polls are usually quite accurate. This time I understand they were considerably less accurate than normal.

As for bias, typically in an exit poll if you were biased you would want to overreport the other candidate's numbers. This would make his supporters feel that it was less crucial to vote, while making your own candidate's supporters think it was MORE crucial to vote, suppressing his turnout and increasing yours. So if the exit polls show Bush losing and the election results show him winning, then two options are

1) the exit polls were jimmied for Bush.
2) the election results were jimmied for Bush.

The other options are

3) there was some unforseen regularity to the voting patterns eg. Bush voters voted later in the day on average)
4) by random chance, the sample was skewed toward Kerry voters.

As any pollster will tell you, #4 is the LEAST likely reason to have a discrepancy!

Justa, they have nothing better to do. they are whining babies because they can't funtion in mainstream America, and though they try to hide it, many of them are frustrated with themselves.

So, they whine and cry and blame it on the government because of their own inadequacies. Shitty job. A lousy car or no car. Credit card debt up the yingyang, etc.

JUST THE USUAL FEELING OF ENTITLEMENT!!

Be prepared for on-going sour grapes from them. Their arguements have more holes than Swiss cheese and they will embarass themselves by logging off and attacking you as a guest.

You're right, Bocephalus, the "terrorists" ARE attacking in Iraq...they're attacking with Abrams tanks, Blackhawk helicopters, F-16's, that sort of thing. The American soldiers, I mean. They are the terrorists in Iraq.

Sorry Kim, I can't provide documentation as this information is top secret. I shouldn't have made it known on this site really. The CIA will be on my case now. We should all be dancing with devil in protest.

"You do know that Bush thinks flamenco dancing is the work of the devil, and is practiced by the followers of satan."

Really? Please provide documentation. Otherwise, you're just spreading silly rumors.

Has anyone pondered the fact that when the terrorists are massing their forces and attacking in Iraq, they are not attacking here?

Here we have a legal system to protect them from being caught and punished.

In Iraq there is no protection for them. No trial, no report to file.

I think it is better to fight them there even if they keep comming and coming. They will wise up when a democracy takes root.

Yes it is a grand diversion for the terrorists.

Go ahead. Make my day.

BO

"The best man won"

The best man usually screws the bridesmaid, not the entire world.

You do know that Bush thinks flamenco dancing is the work of the devil, and is practiced by the followers of satan.

"Now let's see how many of the celebrities who said they'd leave the country actually do. ;-)"

Where will they go? Sadly The Bush administration affects the whole world, not just America.

"Barack Obama in 2008."

From his website:

"Barack Obama has spent a lifetime fighting effectively to empower working families and the poor - as community organizer, civil rights attorney and a leader in the Illinois Senate. He has brought new ideas and approaches in pursuit of traditional Democratic ideals to make a real difference for people -- from better schools to affordable health care to criminal justice reform."

This man is far too sensible and caring to be voted in. He isn't a religious zealot nor is he involved in the oil industry. He has no chance.
