Subject: BS: Bobert's latest question about Womenz...
From: Bobert
Date: 19 Nov 04 - 07:22 PM

Okay, I realize that I'm allready at my '04 limit but I just gotta know why it is that womenz act surprised at the grocery store when the clerk tells them the price. No, the price doesn't surprise them. It's the fact that they have to pay for their purchases???

I mean, they watch and watch as the purchases are rung up (or scanned) and then when it comes to pay they get the deer-in-the-headlights look! Like, waht's this all about?

Men, on the other hand, seem to have different wiring. They understand that, ahhhhh, they are in a store and they are there with their cash in hand or check book open.

But back to about half the womenz? Not a clue...

Sorry, I promise I won't ask any more woemnz questions until '05. Ahhhhh, what is my quota in '05 anyway?

Bobert

Unliberated men are hunters and unliberated women are gatherers. The more you have to pay the less you can gather. But if you are a hunter, and you got it you got it. The analogies break down once liberation is achieved. I will be glad to answer any sociobiological questions as often as they are asked...mg

Bobert, I've never observed this as a particularly gendered problem. I think you overshot your target this time. Or your net is too narrowly cast. Something like that. :)

Because, I mean, why should they have to when they have already complied with all the instructions? They used a cart, and only took what they planned to use mostly, and went up and down the aisles in orderly fashion and unloaded their objects in the right lane, and did everything they were told. Why should they then ALSO have to pay? The store should pay THEM for all they did!!

Used to be that you told the grocer what you wanted and he or she (or a clerk) got it for you. Now the clerk just stands there, totes up the charge, and bags the stuff for you (usually, but not always). Then you pay them for figuring out what you owe, they take your money, and you move on.

Ah....

I dunno...I worked in grocery stores for 6-7 years, and have shopped in 'em for 50...I never noticed that. Caught a woman shoplifting once, though.

Mebbe you have observed a trend of 'one'...

Now me and the Wes Ginny Slide Rule is trained observers of human behavior and this is what we find when it comes to not being ready to pay at the check out counter:

Men... 17%
Boys under 18... 22%
Undecideds (all ages)... 58%
Girls under 18... 73%
Womenz... 82%

You can't argue with scientific evidence, womenz! You all know you do it but, as per ususal, you won't admit it!!!...

It's simple really -- just depends on what store you're in.

When I got to a "cheapo" grocery, just the basic staples and lots of generic products, I'm always surprised at how little my bill is. When I go to a chain grocery, I can usually estimate my bill very, very close. (did I buy meat, laundry detergent, any frills, anything expensive?) When I go to super WalMart I'm usually shocked at how high the bill is, even though I only bought things I needed, there are always lots more of them than I usually buy at one time.

My undercover agents found just the opposite to be true, bobert.

When taking up money at the entrance to the county fair parking lot, you know, a car pulls up to the entrance and the driver has to pay to go inside the lot to park. (and there is usually a big sign saying: PARKING $5) If a woman is driving, she has the money ready - if a man is driving, he has to put the car in park, pull his billfold out of his back pocket, ask, "how much?", etc. etc. you get the picture.

Women definitely take way too damn long at the checkout, especially when they're in front of me in the express line, but I don't think it's because they're surprised at having to pay.

It's because so many of them still insist on paying BY CHECK (writing out the amount in words and numerals, signing in their best penmanship, having their IDs checked, etc. etc.)! Even for, like, $6.95! If you can't carry ten or twenty bucks in cash, for crissakes swipe a card -- you can do that these days! And you don't even have to run up credit, or even *have* credit -- the bank will give you a debit card, for crying out loud!

In the opening scene of "The Big Lebowski," our hero buys a pint of half-and-half to make his "Caucasians" (white Russians), and makes a great display out writing a check for $0.69. A rubber check, in fact. Funny stuff. In real life, of course, this is not male behavior -- not even washed-up hippy burnout male behavior. (Believe me, I'm an expert on THAT topic...)

I'm with ya', Bobert ol' buddy.

Drives me nuts, watching someone else stand in front of me watching the clerk scan grocieries for five minutes, and they don't even open the checkbook until they are given a total. It is just plain inconsiderate. I think it does seem to usually be women--but remember that in a grocery, more shoppers of quantity will be women, women usually carry the checkbooks, and so women are more likely to be writing a check. Men with checkbooks may be just as bad.

These days I generally use a debit card, but the check book is out, the card is out, the check register is open, and the date and store name are already written in by the time I start checkout. If I am going to write a check, I will have completed everything but the amount and signature before I get to the clerk. It is simply common courtesy in my book.

Saint Janie

Heck no, I don't wear the spider hat just anywhere, Sins, an 'never to the grocery store but, hey, maybe I oughtta start wearin' it to see if it makes the womenz even more nuts when it comes time to payin' fir their groceries?

(Ahhhh, Bobert, if you'll remember, it's the pokey womenz in the grocery store that got you bugged. Why would you wanta get 'um even pokier?)

Like I was tryin' to say, but Mz. Janie stepped in an' said it purdy much fir me is that you all womenz is somethin' else in the grocery store. And it's just you'll. I'm tellin' ya, the men is always on the ball. Ain't no social event fir us. No mame, it ain't. Get in an' get out.

(Oh, Bobert. You done messed up with that last sentence. Now ya gonna really pay the price.)

Alright. Here's what actually happened to us yesterday.

Couple in front of us goes through the checkstand with him in front. She stands gaping at the clerk as the items are scanned. Clerk tells her the total and then, and only then, does she begin searching for her plastic. Just at that time, he whips out his cell phone and starts dialing. Showing timing as good as any trapeze act, just as she is pushing buttons on the little machine, he hands her the phone and she starts talking and forgets that she needs twenty bucks in cash. So, the clerk completes the transaction and then has to do another one to get the twenty bucks.

Fortunately for them, they escaped with their lives.

Here's what I think happens.

This lady is in her own revere (sp?). She has been thinking:

"Oh, god, when I leave here, I have to go pick up the stuff from the cleaners...that cleaning guy; he's kind of hot. Maybe I'll complain about something being loose so he'll come close and I can smell him...Then I have to stop and get some gas. That gas guy is hot. I think I'll buy something from behind him so he'll have to turn around and I can see that cute ass of his...Oh! I mustn't forget to stop at the bank. Mmmmm that new bank manager is REALLY hot. I think I saw something pretty big in his pants...or was that just his wad of dough? Hehehe....WHA? HUH? 49.95? WAIT! I need to get my wallet out...Nice day, isn't it? What's your name? Oh, it's there on your name-tag! Well, Doug, you just hold on a small sec while I find my check book. (Mmmm nice smile on that kid. He's hot.)...Here you go, honey...You have a nice day, too!"

(Hehehe)

That is the expression of a woman who has been caught in a trap of her own making. you see she goes to the store with a good idea of how much the bill will be, but on the way round she sees a little something that wasn't on her list, but she thinks 'I'll have that' knowing that that one little item isn't going to break the bank. After she's done that a couple of times, and mentally readjusted her expected bill upwards a mite, she eventually reaches the checkout. She stands there trying to work out how much extra she's spent, but has sneaked so many extra little goodies into her trolley that she's lost track. So when she gets the bill it's way over her estimate so she panics, what she's thinking is, 'Christ now I haven't got enough money to fill the car with fuel' So she short fills it, and when her husband has to top the tank up in the week, blames the kids, or Possums, or anything. So that's why they don't have their money ready, their cheque book ready, their purse open, etc etc.
BTW I do the shopping in our house, it's quicker that way!
Giok

Sorry Beau. I have my card out, slid, and code in while my groceries are checked out. All I have to do is push the YES button and I am on my way.

Now...the other day I was behind a cranky old man in line. He actually OPENED several items to make sure they were fresh before his transaction was complete. And he made the cashier count and re-count his change to him claiming they always cheat him. She was pissed.

So when I got up to the front, I asked with a smile if she would kindly check the manufacturing dates on all my items before checking them through. Took her a minute to get the "Joke". Men are idiots sometimes too, Bo. I know P-Vine has pointed that out to you many times.

I'll go with SINSULL on this one - I always have the card ready before I get to the cashier - there's usually plenty of time while waiting for the idiot in front to finish. Mind you. I would agree that Bobert's description tends to be right, I've stood behind too many of them both in the UK and the USA. I blame it on the 80% rule.

When I do my grocery shopping, I have a list. I tick off things on the list as I put them in the trolley AND I enter the price on my calculator. The only time I act surprised at the check-out is when the total that comes up isn't the same as the total on my calculator.

I should know better to even open my mouth here...but anyway, I almost always pay cash at the grocery store. Checks are for sitting at the kitchen table paying bills, and credit cards are for clothes shopping and Christmas, and cash is for everything else. If I'm slow with my cash at the grocery store it's because I think I've been overcharged - in other words, the cash register amount doesn't agree with my mental tally. You'd be surprised how often you get overcharged. Another place you get overcharged is restaurants. I know a few men who never check the bill or question the charges - what's up with that?

Bobert, I and another female person you know were at the checkstand together today. She had her plastic ready while the cashier was ringing up her purchases and I had mine in my hand as the next customer. She says, Bobert, eat your heart out. Or something to that effect. We were so proud.

Yeah, Ebbie, I'm glad to see that now that I've brought this little gender flaw to you and a certain other female person's attention that you all are going to try to mend yer ways and be ready to pay up... Me and the Wes Ginny Slide Rule give you two about a week an' it will be back to fumbling-as-usual-at-the-checkout-counter...

And yeah, L-Hawk, I've thought about the sex change thing so I could enjoy the easy life of being a womenz and sit around watchin' TV all day with my hair in curlers but then I start thinkin' about all the guys I know and can't think of any of 'um I'd like to see without their clothes...

Ahhhh, thanks fir the offer freda, but I'll take a pass, thank you... I think thre double jeoprady clause in the constituion refers to having to shop with more than one womenz at the same time... I may be crazy but I ain't dumb... Or vice versa...

And yeah, Ellenpoly, this is a serious question. Okay, it may not be as serious as some of the other questions I have about womenz but it's right up there on the list...

I was waiting in line at the supermarket once, an elderly man was behind me with only a few things in his hands. Because I am so nice I said he could go in front of me (I had a trolley full). The bastard didn't say he was holding the overflow from his wife's full trolley and of course he motioned her to go through the checkout with him!

That taught me not to be nice when I shop anymore. Now it's every girl for herself in my book, I may be small but by gosh I'm tough. Don't mess with me when I'm shopping!

Cheers

Hahaha! Yeah, Bobert ol' buddy, I was the other in the line with Ebbie. I didn't say eat your heart out. I said, "Ha! Whatya think of THAT, Bobert!!??"   (This while I waited, card in hand, as the cashier rang up my items). Needless to say, the person behind me did not have to wait any longer than she would have if it had been you ahead of her in the line. The cashier did look at me kinda funny though, wonderin' why I called her Bobert!!

See what you've started now? All across the globe folks will be mumbling something about BOBERT as they pay for their things. The cashiers will think Bobert is a new card. Will that be VIsa, Master card or Bobert?

There is no such thing as a quick trip to the supermarket here.

Though everything is bar coded in the major supermarkets (Carrefour, Metro, Lianhua)it is the checkout that is the problem. It does not matter if it is a Chinese man or a Chinese lady, both genders watch the till display like hawks. Then when it comes time to pay it is inevitably done in cash, but first the bill must be checked again and each line item re-queried with the clerk.

Once the cash is handed over the clerk then checks each note to make sure it is not a forgery, along with the cash are often a wad of discount coupons which have to be checked for validity. Usually a heated argument ensues when a shopper is told a particular coupon is not valid. Alog with the notes are often piles of Jiao and Fen. These are in effect the 1/100's of the RMB. An RMB is worth about 0.826 of a US$. Made of aluminium they are generally a pain in the arse as their individual value is so small, but money is money and often they get handed over in little bags which the clerk has to re-check.

The alternative is to head for the local vegetable and meat market. There the ability to haggle in Chinese is needed. Barguing as my wife calls it.

Even if I think I have got a good price inevitably Jade will say I paid too much. Good barguing is an art which requires a strong constitution, much shouting and arm waving and the ability to turn on tears, onions are very usefull at this point.

I can act but I need a course at RADA in Shakespearean melodrama to make it really work so I avoid the markets. Even if I could the time spent haggling down someone by another 2/100's of an RMB per half kilo is just not worth the effort.

God I hate shopping!

Before I go, I write down where I have to go, where its located in the shop and roughly how much it will cost. Its like an SAS operation. In and out in 2minutes with the goods except theres no tear gas. Umm tear gas, a good idea for this years christmas shopping.

Shopping at one's favorite hobby shop, on the other hand, is pure joy. No need to buy unless you feel like it! The fun of looking at all the new releases! The hope that a collection may be getting sold off at bargain prices! Sheer bliss...

Because I'm a man, I don't think we're all that lost, and no, I don't think we should stop and ask! someone. Why would you listen to a complete stranger? I mean, how the hell could he know where we're going?
-----------------------------------------------
Because I'm a man, there is no need to ask me what I'm thinking about. The answer is always either sex, cars, beer, or football. I have to make up something else when you ask, so don't ask.
----------------------------------------------
Because I'm a man, I do not want to visit your mother, or have your mother come visit us, or talk to her when she calls, or think about her any more than I have to. Whatever you got her for Mother's Day is okay; I don't need to see it. And don't forget to pick up something for my mother, too.
-----------------------------------------------
Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end of it, I didn't.
-----------------------------------------------
Because I'm a man, I think what you're! wearing is fine. I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine.
With the belt or without it---looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine.
Can we just go now?
-----------------------------------------------
Because I'm a man, and this is, after all, the year 2003, I will share equally in the housework. You just do the laundry, the cooking, the gardening, the cleaning, the vacuuming, and the dishes, and I'll do the rest.

Bobert will like these. I don't find them at all funny.

I found out why Chinese women don't normally drag there better halves into a lingerie shop.

Jade has only let me in once and then threw me out because I was ROTFLMFHO.

Jade was after a new bra, I stood patiently waiting nearby. At first it was half an hour of decision on colour, brand and barguing. The usual bust measurement was taken and then I fell over as the shop assistant started hand checking the size and I guess weight of Jade's bust. I did volunteer there and then to change my job, that was when i got thrown out by Jade.

First a parable. You're out in the northern woods and come upon a moose. After just a few bad moves you find yourself precariously up a slender tree with an irritated moose trying to reach you or alternatively trying to jar you out of your perch. You hang on. You hope the moose will get bored or perhaps get curious in seeing what's on the other side of the mountain, so to speak. It's just a a matter of time, you think.

However. The moose is not punching a clock. S/He doesn't really care where s/he is; here is just as good a place as that a mile away. Day. Night. What difference does that make? This is what the moose does.

Every time the moose wanders a few feet away and you inch to a more comfortable position, s/he blasts back at you and the tree whips back and forth as s/he tries to climb up to join you and you desperately pull your legs above your head. Neither hollering or dulcet tones affect the animal's mindset.

So. This is what a woman does.

Bobert, I think your getting let off too damn easy on this thread. I know I said I wasn't going to say anymore but then you had to come back with your funny little comment on the easy life of a woman. Sit around all day watching t.v. with hair up in curlers. Well, golly-gee Bobs ol' buddy you forgot to mention the bon-bons. Are you slipping further into your un-reality hole?

Now, we ain't saying that *every* womenz gets all flustercated in the checkout line. I'm sure that most of you sisters writing in are just as quick on the draw with your plastic as you claim to be. But you-all are probly smarter than most ~ at least you're sharp enough to be pickers, or some kind of musicianers anyway.

But that don't mean there ain't a whole passel of womenz who reg'larly hold up the line with this behavior, and least when they're in front of ME!

Ain't they got a single dang sociolergy department anywheres in the whole great state of Wet Ginny? Bobert, you need to get you a research grant to pay your dang travel expenses if'n you wanna take that scientific folding chair around to every state in the Union!

One more thing: remind me not to go shopping for a jockstrap if I'm ever in Shaighai. Less'n, of course, the sporting goods store has an all-womenz sales force.

well bobert, brucie, Poppagator, LH, shanghaiceltic and all

You know, when I go shopping, I take a back pack to shove everything into. and there is nothing worse than some man standing behind you in the queue, getting too close and bumping into the back pack. Mind you, if there's a man standing behind me in the queue and getting tooo close, all i have to do is turn slightly and WHAAACK goes the back pack, and i'm so sorry but you shouldnt have been standing there, should you.

while some people are worried about the fiddling with wallets etc, others of us are concerned about having a little space around us in the queue. and i ask you, which is the more serious misdemeanour? a minor matter of moments, or an insidious attempt to physically infringe and dominate?

and in this minor matter of moments, could this be an indication that you yourself are not living in the moment, but are living in the future or the past, not knowing how to BE HERE NOW but actually residing mentally in a different timne zone and fantasising about moving on to a future activity?

possibly these queue moments could be an opportunity to let go and let shopping queue, to engage in some zen and the art of shopping trolley maintenance, or even to seriously question whether you have shopping queue anxiety, a recently identified disorder which is an indicator of dysfunctional lobal patterms.

so next toime youre standing there twitching at some poor unidentified female (and have you looked closely, are you sure its a female?) consider your own time space disfunction and consider locking yourself into a clinic for a period of time, with an encounter group and expert care to you to confront and heal these polydismorphic interspacials shoppingmall symptoms.

then again, you could just try some deep breathing, although these days that can be misinterpreted as well.

freda

Freda - I agree with you on the back pack thing - I've used that one a number of times. Maybe that's why high heels are still so popular, think of the damage you can do standing on their toes in those.... I do dislike strangers invading my space that way, they ain't going to get served any faster by crowding up close and it does seem to be a man thing as well, on the whole.

Well, I was hoping for a rise of befuddlement out of either side but no one has verbalized one so I shall abandon that approach.

I think that the main reason that some men develop the belief that women, per se, dawdle in checkout lines or wherever is that they are the Great Adversary and that those same men are just not noticing, and therefore, not counting, when people of their own sex do it.

But, numerically, I imagine that more women take longer than most men because it tends to be the women who are flanked by children, women who are doing the weekly shopping, women who are trying to remember if they got eveything, so that they don't have to make a second trip.

(Besides, just how hard is it to whip out the wallet from your pocket? The woman is carrying all kinds of gear in her handbag or backpack, things ranging from toys for her child, books to be returned to the librar and tissues for the aforesaid child's nose, not to mention things that her spouse doesn't/can't carry.)

So buzz off, bobert.

Ok, serious answer since freda has been so good as to write her own views in detail.

Here is mine. I also use a backpack, and often one of those trolleys, since I walk to and from the supermarket which is about a half a mile away.

When I get into line, I prepare as much as I can ahead of time. It's in my nature to do so. I tell the check-out clerk that I'll pack myself, and if it happens that I've had to wait for a long while until it's my turn, I do it in the most Zenlike of fashions. Maybe it's because of all the things that freda said that I've chosen to take up the challenge of being at my very best during the times which can become so very tedious. I smile and make pleasant conversation, and I do my best to be ready with my money and loyalty card (yeah yeah, but it's how I can afford to go see movies) so as not to hold up anyone behind me. I even check the grocery list once I've moved a little away from the cashier, so that if there's a mistake (and there often is) I can deal with it on my way out.

The only concession I make to the whole process and my desire for it to be a pleasant one for all concerned, is that I avoid going at busy times of the day. This helps a great deal and there is less stress all around.

That's it. I may be a mutant and only one of a kind, but I come home with what I set out to get, and I don't feel like I've been through the wars.

Peace Out, and Namaste.

..xx..e

Well gol danged.... Here I go and step away from this joint an' the womenz is no threatenin' bodily harm??? Like wahts this about??? Packin' knapsacks and threatenin' to bludgeon us poor guys who has been waitin' in lines for days for, ahhhhh, our imnpatience???

Things seem to be heatin up 'round the Catbox...

Being the peacefull, yet curious, individual that I is, I am seriously considerin' withdrawin' mny original question (irregardless of its validity) jus' to end these threats of violence against my fellow man... I mean, shoot, we allready are stuck waiting in lines behind the womenz, we allready work so hard that we die 10 years before the womenz so to do anything that could bring about a situation where we might die 20, 30 or 50 years before the womenz is not propductive to our cause...

so fir that reason, and that reason alone, I'll jus' say that all womenz is considerate and sensitive shoppers... Howz that??? Everybody happy???

I mean like I ain't even gonna say a dnaged word about going down to South Carolina to a Harris Teeter grocery store today. Nope, ain't gonna say nuthin' 'bout gettin' stuck behind Betty Sue Emmilee who not only didn't think she would have to pay but was so sure of it that she left her pocketbook at her trailer... No, I won't even tell ya' about the 45 minute discussion she had with the manager, while the line got longer and longer.... Nope ain't gonna get no details outta me on this one....

Sorry, guys... But the womenz is the most considerate shoppers on the planet... Like the Bush election, we're gonna have to jus' get over it....

Sniff....

I hate to throw in the towell, guys, but they is threatenin' the knapsack defense an' we're not ready for this at this time... We'll jus have to regroup, like they have, and counter when they least expect it....

Sniff...

Bobert

Bobert... on the longevity thing. Studies have shown that married men tend to live longer than unmarried men. But women who are married tend to experience pretty much exactly the same life span as unmarried women. So quit yer complaining and count your blessings.

Memme see if I got this correct, CarolC.... You say that womenz, married or ot live longer than men. Right? But then you say that married men live longer than unmarried men? Right?

Well, speakin' fir myself, I reckon that If I tried to die then the P-Vine would snatch me from the jaws of death, yank my sorry butt aside an' say "Hey, not so fast. Did you see that list of things I need you to do I left next to the pudder? Now get to 'um..."

Geeze. Can'[t ven die to get some relief... What is the world comin' to????
