Just a line to let you know that Dave was taken into hospital on Saturday night after having a mild stroke. He subsequently had three more and is in hospital while they monitor his blood pressure and do a CAT scan. I'll let you have more details when I have them

they can do some amazing work with stroke victims these days.
If he was diagnosed and treated soon, there is a likely drug
that can speed recovery. Best of luck to him, and I hope he
is able to re-gain all his abilities, etc. or that there was
little damage. I believe Trevor said that he, too, suffered
a similar situation.

Bugger! Best wishes for a good recovery from here in't'snowy north. If ever you want to read the story of a recovery from a stroke that the medics said he would never recover from try reading 'Unfinished Business' by Ted Edwards. Fabulous story and written with the wit and style you would expect from one of our leading songwriters. I have a copy if you want to borrow it but it is well worth buying anyway.

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Thanks for the lovely messages. Dave has had his Cat scan and is now waiting for the results. His speech is still a bit slurred but he isn't any worse. If he has to stay in for a bit he'll be glad of a visitor, so if you can get to Queen Mary's at Sidcup PM me and I'll give you the details.

if it IS a stroke, it is a head thing, not a heart thing...
lack of oxygen to a part of the brain...either from a
blockage like a blood clot--or a hemmhorrage from a burst
blood vessel.(too little or too much blood)
Usually the opposite side of the body is effected (affected?)
Hopefully this one is minor, and that Dave will recover soon.

True Open Mike....it's just that the effects are most often head things but the causes are most often related to hematology and vascular problems which share the same problems/causes as heart disease in most cases. I tend to forget the first part and think of the last.

In your case Dave, don't think about it at all......Just do what you're told!

There is no reason why he cannot make a full recovery but it will take time. But although he still has a 'dead' arm he can still sing!!!. So if you come up to visit him Slats you can make it a duet. Sorry to come in so late on this. Haven't logged on for a few days and I was really shocked when I picked up the start of this thread.

At least I've been able to skip thru the bad bits and get straight onto the bit where you're on the road back to normal.

Great to hear that the voice is not going to suffer but you really have got to get that arm back to full strength. Cos if McFat starts buggering around again then you may be called on to sort out Lord Raggytash in hand-to-hand combat. (Although thinking about it, you could probably do it with one hand - no problem).

Take care and best wishes from Faversham and from me.

Dave (and Linda!) – shocked to "hear" this most unwelcome news! But pleased to hear that Dave seems to be on the mend already. Do you think you can persuade the hospital staff to consider playing guitar (and singing, of course!) a valid form of PT? ;^)

And Linda, how are you holding up? It is so difficult when someone you care about is in hospital – easy to be so worried about him that you forget to take good care of yourself. Just remember that you need to be good to yourself for his sake as well as your own.

I hope a bunch of nearby 'Catters will be able to make time to visit him in hospital...

Hi Linda

Very pleased to hear that Dave is on the mend, please give him my best and tell him I'm looking foward to renewed hostiliies as soon as he is up and ready, he'll be interested to note that the little cowardly varlet Klumperbum has come scurrying from the woodwork to his "defence", couldn't manage to attend a duel himself to defend his own "honour" .......... possible because he doesn't have any !
Actually NO, he doesn't offer his assistance, still hiding behind his Mother's skirt tails, he reckons Dave can do it from his sick bed, where is the Nelson spirit, where are Hector and Lysander,
We don't want tot fight but by jingo if we do, we've got the ships, we've got the men, we've got the money too, we've fought the bear before and whilst we're Britons too, the Russians shall not have Constantinople, By God I feel better for that

No doubt the Gladiator will be rolled out very soon and I'm sure I can speak for all Catters when I say GET WELL SOON DAVE !!

Well, we had a bit of bad news yesterday. The hospital say that it could take 4-6 months before he's fully recovered and he will have to stay in hospital for most of that time. They are giving him more tests today to discover exactly what caused it and then it's medication and physio. I'm hoping that they are just being cautious and that he will be well enough for Miskin. He is being positive about it though so we'll just have to be patient. If anyone is going to be in the area over the next few months pop in and have a chat. PM me and I'll give you the details.

Oh bumholes!!! That's a long time to have to put up with hospital food, and hospitals are such boring places if you're just 'walking wounded' I don't know what you think, but if he's going to be there for that long, then perhaps we could have a postal address to send him cards and letters etc. I hope he has a radio of his own, and a CD player too, at least he will have more control over his environment that way. Better buy shares in Ever Ready too, it could cost a lot in batteries.
I'm waiting for a heart related hospital visit too, but a scheduled one!
Do send him best wishes from both myself, and Liz my partner.

Linda,
I had a close colleague go down with a stroke that left him paralysed one side, with no vision from one eye, and no speech at all. Within 3 months the vision had returned, he regained full use of his affected arm and leg, and speech was at 60%. He went home at that point. Within 6 months from thew stroke he was allowed to drive, and speech was at 90%. By the end of the year you wouldn't have known that he had a stroke.

It took a lot of physio and a lot of determination from the guy himself, as well as a lot of Warfarin (to thin his blood, because it was found that his had unusually think consistency, which had caused the clots in the first place).

Dave's case sounds significantly lighter, and so I hope the timescales involved will be even shorter. As Hilary says, I am sure that the doctors are being cautious until they identify the precises cause and the location of any clots.

Just think how fit he will be when you get him back after all the physio - lucky you!

Meanwhile, just a thought: I will be away to Oz myself, but how about a few Catters getting together for a litle carol singing in the hospital around Dave's bed? I am sure he would appreciate both the sounds and the faces being there.

Carols in the hospital for Dave & other Yuletide residents sounds like a Brill idea!!! I used to spend every Christmas morning singing with the Luton Girls Choir at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital till 1976 & it really was very rewarding.

It'd need to be arranged with the Hospital though, wouldn't want to upset them as they're looking after Dave so well.

I can put the turkey on a low light, anyone else???

Someone somewhere must have the right connections to give a mate a help ......... or even Dave come to that

Linda, as has already been stated you also need to take care of yourself, running here, there and everywhere will soon wear down the best of people, any chance of setting up a rota of visitors so you're not tied down every night, I feel sure you and Dave have enough friends down there to fulfil this and give you the chance of a breather, but I suspect you will ignore this well meaning sentiment

It's sounding more and more like a Carry On film. Dave playing the Sid James role, of course.

Look, Linda, if they were sending him home straight away, you'd be worried they were rushing it, and they might have overlooked something, and you'd feel you had to watch him like a hawk.

If they say six months, that's probably an overestimate than an underestimate. The good thing is from what you say they are expecting a full recovery, like El Greko's colleague, and the bloke who lives mnext door but one from me.

Linda, my hubby & I have loads of stuff we've recorded digitally off BBC radio (mostly 4 & 7); there's some great stuff – especially from Radio 7: old series of "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again", "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" and tons more, also (from Radio 4) the latest installments of "Hitch-hiker's Guide..."

We'd be happy to slap 'em onto CDs & send 'em along for Dave to listen to – if he has a CD player. If he's got something that will play MP3s, that's even better, 'cos we can fit way more on each CD, but anyway, PM me & let me know the specs of whatever he's got & we'll send some stuff along ASAP (if you think he'd like it).

Have a folkie friend here in Sheffield who also had a stroke (a few weeks ago) & some of us have been going over to sing with her; the ward seems to cope with it pretty well. We asked if it was OK the first time we went, but since then we just show up & sing and it seems to be OK.

She's got one of these combination TV/radio/phone/net access deals by her bed, which is extremely nifty, but my impression is that they eat money like it was water, so a certain amount of caution might be called for. But if Dave does have access to one of these, anyone wondering what a good gift would be might well consider purchasing a "phone card" (I noticed the vending machines in the hospital, which sell these cards at several different price levels) which pays for X amount of time/usage. Just something to keep in mind...

Sending out warm thoughts to you both.

Giok, the rules concerning the use of mobiles in hospitals has been much relaxed in recent months, In the hospital I work in, we no longer ask the public or staff the turn them off, except for the convenience of others or on certain wards like ICU

Hi Linda and Dave

I have a couple of friends who have had strokes and continued on very well afterwards.

One is a woman who worked in an old housing job that i had once. she was working in the day, studying at night, and also caring for an elderly relative with dementia. in her spare time she worked for an ethnic community organisation. classic case of workaholic.

the stroke was massive and the side of her face dropped considerably. since then, after rehab, she put her relative in a nursing home, finished her degree full time and has worked successfully as a lawyer, including winning a definitive High Court case against the Oz govt, on behalf of the community she worked to assist.

Another friend was the head of a national educational institution school, a surfie, and a very good artist. He wasnt pushing himself too hard but lived an active and enjoyable life. He had a very debilitating series of strokes, and spent a long period in recovery. While he retired from the job, he got a new job in stroke rehab education, continued surfing, and still exhibits his outstanding artwork.

My father had a stroke in his early eighties. he kept his mental clarity, and was able to complete cryptic crosswords, bet on the horses and entertain his kids and grandkids with funny stories for a few more years after that.

hope these stories help - obviously the key is to start a law degree asap! :-)

good luck and best wishes

freda

Dave has now been moved to the stroke ward which is 100% better than the recovery ward he has been to up to now. Only drawback is that visiting is restricted to 4pm - 8pm during the week and 11am - 8pm at weekends. I am trying to find out if there is internet access available, and if so I will take his laptop in. I will also find out if they waould like some music/carols in the run up to Christmas. He has been told that all being well they will let him out over Christmas but I have nothing definite yet. Just keep your fingers crossed. He has a bedside phone so if anyone would like to keep in touch please PM me and I'll give you the number.

Here's a song I wrote when I was in hospital a few years back for an operation. I think I posted it one time, but here it is again anyway:

The Chestnut Ward
In the Chestnut Ward,
in the middle of the night,
propped up on your pillow
you wait till it gets light.
And though your body's aching,
you know that it's all right, in the Chestnut Ward,
in the middle of the night.

And over in the distance,
in a little pool of light,
there's a nurse, she'd busy writing
all that stuff they've got to write.
But you know that if you called her
she'd be right there by your side
and she'd tuck you in and give you stuff
to help you feel all right,
In the Chestnut Ward...

And all around me sleeping
are a bunch of broken men,
who came here to the Chestnut Ward
to get patched up again,
and we've talked all day about our lives
and the choices that we made,
and it's hard to believe we only
met each other yesterday.
In the Chestnut Ward...

Old men who fought, so long ago,
against the fall of night,
and one who went to prison,
for he wouldn't go to fight.
And one who had a comrade
who was killed by Uncle Sam -
and me, I was a baby then,
in a shelter, in a pram.

Well, it's something like a prison camp,
and something like a jail,
and all of us are frightened men,
though some are tough as nails.
And we all are tired and hopeful -
we're tired of all the pain,
and we're waiting till the morning
when we hope we'll walk again.
In the Chestnut Ward....

But they're closing down the Chestnut Ward,
that's what the papers say.
And the people who have helped us here
will go their separate ways.
There's a cheaper way to so it,
and the Chestnut Ward won't pay
when you're getting back to basics
in the modern kind of way.

Well the ones who'd close the Chestnut ward,
I'd cut them back to size.
I'd cut them into pieces,
along with all their lies.
And I'd leave them lying broken -
and I wouldn't even care.
Still, perhaps they might get mended -
if the Chestnut Ward's still there.

In the Chestnut Ward,
in the middle of the night,
propped up on your pillow
you wait till it gets light.
And though your body's aching,
you know that it's all right,
in the Chestnut Ward,
in the middle of the night.

And over in the distance,
in a little pool of light,
there's a nurse, she'd busy writing
all that stuff they've got to write.
But you know that if you called her
she'd be right there by your side
to tuck you in and give you stuff
to help you feel all right.

In the Chestnut Ward,
in the middle of the night,
propped up on your pillow
you wait till it gets light.
And though your body's aching,
you know that it's all right,
in the Chestnut Ward,
in the middle of the night.

II still think this should be up in the music section - there are people who never open up the BS threads. I call that a but silly, but it could mean friends not getting to know about this.)

Some of you may not be aware that I am an exponent of the art of melodic throat draining techniques. This involves binding the patient to ensure immobility, possibly with a noose if the patient proves difficult, and conducting a number of Guantanamo approved chatting techniques to loosen him up (this art form is better performed on men). While initially difficult, I can play a patients throat like an instrument, and have a wide range of sounds I can extract, according to the level of consciousness of the patient. These include:

Gargles, gurgles, screams, cries, shouts, gasps, moans, grunts, shouts, ululation, axsphyxiation, and oral defamation.

With the right subject, I can perform the 1812 Overture, I Did it My Way, and What are we going to do about Maria.

I can also entice the patient to perform double throated Tibetan head songs, using certain techniques.

I will be coming to Dave's hospital to do a demonstration on him shortly.

I have been to see the physio today, and seen Dave's progress. He is walking with a stick now and has movement in his arm down to the elbow. It is quite probable that they will discharge him in time for Christmas and then take him back as a day patient if he can manage at home. All will depend on his progress over the next two weeks. He's getting impatient now but we've told him not to expect miracles but just take a day at a time. So expect to see him back on Mudcat soon.

Can we have his guitar for a raffle prize?

'He was the tenor section' I like that, and all before G4 came into view.

And I've resisted being rude about him.

So far.

Look , no hi-jack -out of respect.

He can get on with cutting his own CD albums of songs he knows, he's got to produce 21 albums with 14 songs on each to beat my total, that'll give him something to do in the new year.

Unless he's got something better to do!, nah not for a while.

Just an idea, but if Nurse Ratchett and Avril Betts where to supervise his recouperation they could walk a few paces in front of him, he'd soon be galloping along like a young colt

colt ? ........... is that the correct spelling ?

Tue 14th Dec

Here I am again. Linda's recharged my PDA (an iPaq 2210 running Pocket Windows) and I'll send this file back (on a compact flash card) with her to post as soon as she can.

Well one little victory to report, I've gained my "walking licence" so I don't have to get a nurse to follow me around before l go anywhere - I can now walk for exercise (and practice), rather than just to go to the loo. I've even been promised a short walk outside
tomorrow.

I've been doing physio on my arm this morning and I'm getting more strenght in it, but still no movement in the wrist and hand. Still, I'll keep trying - I want to play that guitar again some day - even if Breezy and some others might object to me usinng the word "again".

PDA permitting, I'll try and write something each day and get Linda to post it when she gets the chance.

Dave

u 16th Dec

Sorry for the delay ln posting these messages, but I think that the guards are are getting suspicious. They haven't actually body-searched Essex Giirl yet, but she's still hoping.

First today it was the turn of the p-terrorists who marched me up and down a flight of stairs and threatened to shoot me if I didn't move my feet and stick in the right sequence (stick-left-right going up, stick-right-left coming down).

Then they handed me over to the o-terrorists, who used me as slave labour in the kitchen - I was forced to make coffee (I know the Health Service is short of cash but . . .).

Then just to stop me getting too settled, they moved my bed - so I'll have to start a new escape tunnel. Btw for anyone with my bedside phone number, the last digit is now 2 (instead of 1).

The good news from the escape committtee is that the breakout's still on for next week, probably next Wednesday or Thursday.

Please swallow this message after reading - I'm sorry that it's written on paper that we make out of the senna tablets.

Dave

Get well slowly but surely, Dave.
My Dad had a stroke aged 75 (shortly after a quadruple bypass) and couldn't write for nearly six months, but fully recovered the use of his right hand after that.
So, don't sell the guitar! (Pawn it maybe?).
Or shouldn't I say that, judging from the less than complimentary comments from some mudcatters?
Have a gentle, merry Christmas and an ever improving happy and healthy new year.

Tobyjug (Dave C.)

ri 17th Dec

Things seem to be getting under way for my release home. They've done a preliimary survey at the house, and the work (handrails etc) is chedhuled for Tuesday. Povidiing that it's done OK, I willl be taken for a home visit on Wednesday and if the OT is satisfied that I'm alright, I'll be allowed to stay.

Unfortunately, I probably won't get any more physio until into the new year, and because I live in a different borough, (Greenwich rather than Bexley) it'll be somewhere else then. So I'll have do my exercises on my own.

It'll be great to be home though, it's a bit soul destroying spending a long time in hospital. I might even be able to manage the odd trip out with Linda.

When my father at the age of 84 was in hospital and being walked down the hall by two nurses, trailing all the tubing gear that goes with recent surgery, he told them: "I'm tired of being led around by my penis." They thought it was great fun.

I'm definitely getting better mobility on my feet, both around the house and outside. We have borrowed a wheelchair, but it's more for making sure that I've got a seat when I need one. Dave's doing O.K. He'sdoing a lot of walking and discovering the joys of suburban public transport, but then he's got plenty of time. We are getting back into performing and should be at Les Sullivans day at Bishops Stortford. We are going to Miskin at Easter, and will be at Micca & Cats handfasting. We will be having the summer barbecue, probably on Sunday 26th June, as we will be at the Maidstone folk weekend at The Greyhound for the weekend of 10th/12th and then at Knockholt for the following weekend. After making a successful escape run on the Wednesday before Christmas, I've been getting used to managing back at home. My mobility has increased wonderfully, and I'm now getting around on public transport - I even managed to get to Kingston University under my own steam on Tuesaday. I can manage without a stick now - although it does come in useful in crowds for tripping people up before they bump into me, or for getting a seat on public transport, and it does help to dispell the impression that my uneven gait and sometimes slightly slurred speech are the result of alcoholic intoxication (well at least to strangers).

I received a letter from the hospital last week, announcing that the entry from Linda and I, had won the first prize in the physioterrorist's Christmas quiz. I was worried that this might be a ruse to re-capture me, but I managed to make my getaway with th £25 OK. Incidently although someone else equalled our score in the quiz, I won because I'd entered a tie-break limerick and they hadn't. This had to be about the hospital or a member of staff, and remembering my buxom physio Kay, I submitted:

A sexy young physio called Kay,
Protudes in a delightful way.
When she asked me to squeeze,
I thought, Oh yes please,
But my fingers just wouldn't obey.

Strangely enough it was by a similiar method that I discovered some movement in my right hand while I was in bed with Linda one night, a few weeks ago . . .

Unfortunately, since leaving hospital, I have not had any more physio. This is because I'm now the responsibility of my own health authority, Greenwich and they had a waiting list. I have at last received an appointment for Monday, so hopefully I can start making some further progess with getting functionality back in my right arm - I hope the Greenwich physios offer the same sort of motivation that Kay and her colleagues did though.

fantastic limerick, Dave. you could develop your own form of stroke recovery therapy - workshops, rainbow website, the works -

how to grope your way to recovery

mammary massage for mind recovery

You can feel yourself

Ease into Sleaze for health and happiness

I can see it all, the workshops, lessons for grope-frigid clients, the white robes and big cheques.

go for it!

Awright, Bryant. I know that you are rehabbing and we have to take it easy on you........

BUT

........that does not allow you to break the friggin' rules. You have been around this little bus stop on the Internet motorway long enough to know the you must give us a "remove all liquids from your mouth, and empty your bladder and bowels" warning before telling those types of stories. I have messed the desk, the monitor screen and a helluva nice set of sweat pants, while reading your unique version of physical therapy. I am going to talk to my MD straightaway to see if I can't get into this program.

    :^)

Great stuff, Amigo. Keep up the good groping ..... er..... work!!

All the best,

Mick

But Liz, I thought the site of your operation was in the local hospital - and I've only recently escaped from one of those !
Still, as contact with female anatomy seems to be theraputic to my right upper limb, perhaps I'll have to use my Freedom Pass to travel to Plaistow so we could participate in joint therapy. Please explain to Manitas that these sorts of alternative therapy are highly regarded these days.

Hi Dave - for two days I couldn't reach the forum - imagine that!
I just felt cut off from the worl. But now I'm happy to hear that you are rehabilitating well. That's swell!
Using the possibilities of public transport I propose to use a cane even if you don't need it any more - or better a crutch: it's more conspicuous. Believe me, it's a good way to get seats offered; I made this experience myself. It also helps to look not too happy.

Go on, old boy, and my regards to Linda.
Wilfried

I'm afraid I've had a bit of setback. As some of you who saw me at Miskin will know, I took a tumble going downstairs two Sundays ago and had a painful right shoulder. When I went for my physio appointment yesterday, my therapist sent me to have it x-rayed, and it turns out that I have broken my right humerus near the shoulder ball. I'm now wearing a sling and can't do any physio on it for some weeks. Doesn't stop me from singing though.

Or was it emulsions?
Something like that.

Went to the fracture clinic this morning, saw the x-rays - the break is diagonally across the ball, but it's only slightly displaced. They reckon I'll be able to get back to physio on the arm in about 3 weeks. I'll just have to concentrate on the hand until then - just have to find one of my favourite squeezable objects - oh good Linda's just got back from work - that gives me choice of two . . . .

Ouch! Falling down stairs is not recommended as part of an effective stroke recovery programme – so don't do it again, kiddo!

There are better ways to avoid physio...

I've started back at work, although I'm only doing a 4 hour day at present. I've still got my right arm in a sling for a couple of weeks more so I'm not able to do much in the way of exercises. I've sung a few times recently and seemed to be in good voice and power at Dave & Eileen Masterson's aniversary party on Saturday night - but it's all strictly unaccompanied singing at the moment.

We can certainly vouch for the good voice and power. Many thanks to you and Essex Girl for coming down to the nether regions of Kent for our Anniversary bash. Your duet with Linda was wonderful, and as for your rendition of 'Sweeney Todd'.. say no more! Got have some photos of the evening so will get them onto Mudcat when I work out the technology. And thanks for my Mudcat badges!
