I have no cable and stopped the newspapers at my house as well, so I was amazed to read about Victor Yushenko being poisoned. Why is his face so pockmarked? Is that what ricin does? Or was it dioxide? Can someone enlighten me? and who poisoned him? Are politics so primitive over there that this sor of thing can happpen?

The Internet news sources are mixed on this. The various factions in Ukraine are positive on one side or the other, of course. CNN seems to be saying that nobody knows, and perhaps they never will.

Ricin is very toxic. Survival is quite rare. If he was poisoned, I'll bet it was by Ukranians, not Russians. The KGB has better resources than that.

Ricin has to be injcted in to the system it is not able to be ingested or inhaled. i beleive that there was an assassination in london by the bUlgarians that involved a brolly and an agent. up shot being wee gut got stbbed in the leg with some ricin and kicked the bucket.

If he'd been poisoned by rycin he'd be quite remarkably lucky not to be dead. I'm pretty sure there is no poison which is specifaclly designed to spoil the looks of politicians. Mind you, looking at some of them, I'm not so sure...

And I thought the thread was about Tom Hanks' next film - the sequel to Saving Private Ryan.
On a serious note though the symptoms of gross acne ring a bell from chemicals which were banned around 20 years back. Was it the group of substances known as Poly-chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)? Wasn't Agent Orange - the defoliant used by US troops in (?) Viet Nam or Korea one of the group of chemicals?
I'm working from memory because I can't be bothered to go trawling through the 'net at this time of day.

Yes, the Austrians now say it was a definite (and intentional) poisoning, about which they are about to give details. A British expert (not on the case) said he thinks it will be Dioxin (e.g. Agent Orange.) Horrible.

sidenote, FWIW: 60 Minutes a few years ago discussed illegal Soviet research on bio weapons. One of the scientists who worked there was profiled, he was debriefed in the US. He devised a nasty type of bio-weapon that starts out like pneumonia and ends up like senility. They didn't get into whether it had been weaponized or whether the Soviets had ever stopped.

Latest word I've read/heard/seen says dioxin seems to be the leading suspect right now. Yes, a component of Agent Orange.

I remember when the gummint/bigbidniss conglomerate tried to claim officially that the vets were full of nonsense -- the stuff couldn't have caused them any problems, no coverage at the VA to examine possible relationship of "syndrome", etc. Do they really not understand the interrelatedness of life on this planet? Or do they just think they can hide that fact from us? Whichever is the correct answer, what's the best way to CHANGE it?    Tw

I am absolutely disgusted! Even the bridge of his nose has caved in. How could anyone be so cruel? I hope the people of the Ukraine will take this into account when they vote. Any political party that would stoop to such deplorable tactics should be suspect. (I know that nobody has been arrested or convicted but in this case, it seems rather obvious.)

I know it's not funny but the thought htat putting Dioxin somebody's soup and the WORST that happens is a tragic case of adult acne is just..wryly amusing.

The poisoning is real and there is little doubt that it was done on purpose but one thing remains unclear: What was the planned effect?

(1) A murder plot with the lucky unplanned result of Yushenko surviving?
(2) A plot to make him look ill with the result being worse than planned?

That there were rumours in Ukraine about his health very shortly after the poison being administered makes version 2 a bit more probable. Still nasty, but not as bad as version 1.

Thanks for option (2) to consider. There are so many confusing points about (1). I had stumbled into thoughts of someone doing this to make his opponents appear as hideous monsters, but that doesn't make sense either.

Option (2) makes some more sense when considering that his measured levels of dioxin are now approaching normal. If the dioxin can be removed so quickly, and this incident was so hard to diagnose, people with knowledge of its properties (biological effect) could have intended to make it a never-diagnosed, non-lethal event. It doesn't seem likely that they had hoped for a never-diagnosable death.

I'll neede to go back and read when they said his level was at 2000 times the norm, and when (and if) they said it had gone back to near normal levels. (Does this apply to liver tissue as well?) If it took so long to diagnose, how did they diagnose it at 2000x, and then soon thereafter say now normal? From stored tissue specimens? (Or did they know this for much longer than they will admit?)
