Subject: RE: BS: Downloading Movies From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Jan 05 - 11:13 AM How does eMule work then, Clinton? Just been on their web site and it looks kind of interesteing but it seems I need to download a client. Is it Kazaa-ish? If so does it contain the same sort of spyware? Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Downloading Movies From: Clinton Hammond Date: 19 Jan 05 - 11:46 AM Yes it's Kazaa-sih.... No, it has no 'spyware' you need to worry about... It can however be a right bugger to set up properly... it is NOT for the computer illiterate... Good luck DtG! |

Subject: RE: BS: Downloading Movies From: mack/misophist Date: 19 Jan 05 - 04:10 PM According to the news reports, here's what's happening. P2P download systems include a certain pressure to offer files as well as downloading them. The RIAA has been sueing both downloaders and uploaders for some time. The MPAA (movies) has just started. They've already managed to close the major BitTorrent server. Your ISP knows who you are and may or may not resist handing the information over if subpoenaed. If they resist, the case may or may not go in their favour. The RIAA has been winning consistantly, of late. Your best protection is the fact that you're just another target out of thousands. Take the chance, if you want. The average RIAA demand has been US$3000; the MPAA wants a lot more. Need I say that most P2P downloadable movies are illegal? It's been said that quality varies from awful to perfect. You won't know 'til you look at it. There are closed P2P groups. Traffic logs indicate who they are but the nature of that trafic is private. So far. The economics of these lawsuits stinks. Ultimately, they lose money. Neither the RIAA nor the MPAA seem to be bothered by that. Both are rich. |
Subject: RE: BS: Downloading Movies From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 19 Jan 05 - 04:34 PM The losing money part is a portion of the motivation for such suits: Make the target, the alleged infringing user, pay out a lot of money in court costs, because the big organizations can afford it better. It's intimidation mainly, with a certain amount of revenge in it, I think. Even if the charging organization loses the lawsuit, they win in the long run by arm-twisting and scare tactics. Subject: RE: BS: Downloading Movies From: Clinton Hammond Date: 19 Jan 05 - 04:36 PM RIAA... and MPAA are AMERICAN agencies, and have NO jurisdiction over me... Canada has ruled differently than the US did when it comes to PTP file sharing... So they can chew me... :-) I file share with impunity! |
Subject: RE: BS: Downloading Movies From: mack/misophist Date: 19 Jan 05 - 06:08 PM IIRC, the Canadian ruling didn't say that file sharing was OK, it just said that the software to share files was, despite the possibility of abuse, entirely legal. The fact that the RIAA and MPAA are American doesn't stop them from filing suit in a Canadian court. Remember that the case that forced Lindows to change their name to Linspire was filed in Europe. Two US companies; Lindows won the case here but lost in Europe. An action may be brought where-ever the occasion for it occurs. The thing that protects Canadian file sharers is the difficulty of identifying them. Should that problem disappear, I predict another round of suits. |
