It gives young people a chance to meet and play with other young people and some of the prizes include playing at Towersey and Cambridge Folk Festivals. Both groups seem happy to mix generally but 25 is the youth cut-off at Folk Works and also applies to entry for the Ethno gatherings. At 26, I all alone beweep my outcast state. Over-aged, I once went to a youth workshop hosted by Sam Pirt. When I told him I was too old, he said "Youth is a state of mind". Wise words, though I acknowledge the need for a cut-off at some point. |

As to the question from GUEST, the reason I was looking for folkies my age was to know that I am not the only one (I knew there had to be others), and so that I could share my perspective and joy with my peers. The music does not change very much. But if you are not passed it at 26 and want to do more than make and talk folk music ('shucks' - like kissing, making-out and suchlike) one can understand that a 61 year-old folkie would not be your ideal choice. And looking for someone your own age (or younger, as long as they don't think you to be too old) would be understandable. However and more seriously, there is also always the warning that should be made that - appeals for young people to make contact via the internet - may not be all they seem and the people making them may not in fact be the age they claim to be........ |

I have nothing against talking and playing folk music (as well as other genres) with individuals older than I am, but that is all I have been able to do thus far. I sent out the message to find the younger "folkies" merely because I had met very few people who shared my enthusiasm who are my age. I already have older people with whom to talk and play folk music, so I didn't look for them. I wouldn't look for a computer on the Internet, because I already have one that satisfies me. It's the same thing. I love to chat about folk music, which is why I joined Mudcat. As you may notice, I also join in on many other threads; I am not preoccupied with people who are under 26 (The Shambles, I picked 25 because it is a round number, that's all). I hope I didn't offend anyone, but I just wanted to say hello to the other "young 'uns" out there. If I did offend, I am sorry and I am proud to be on Mudcat with you. None was taken - I was just pointing out that there were a few other considerations. We have many things that divide and exclude us in the real world. Race, gender race, religion and age are a few of these. Online these things only threaten to divide us if we allow them to, by specifing them - for no one would be aware of them unless we write and do this. Why don't you just assume that all contributors to the forum are under 25 and how do you know that they are not? For most of us would be unlikely to write and correct this - if only we were - 25 again. Music to me is one way that - whatever our differences - we can all unite and speak the same language. The various attempts we make to encourage younger folk are well-intended but these schemes do have to set an age limit. This can prove be counter-productive - especially for those borderline cases like our poor Cod Fiddler here - who has to feel guilty and over -the hill at 26 - if they are lucky enough to be able to be squeezed in to events that should officially exclude them. The other downside to the Folkworks youngsters - in my experience in sessions with some of them - is that they tend to play (often the sets they rehearse) as a group and this can prevent others from joining in - which after is the main point of such informal gatherings. This could lead to a possible and quite artificial division on the grounds of age. I feel that this would be especially sad - as every session I have ever attended (and there are many) - far from excluding younger players - will always bend over backwards to encourage their participation. |

Subject: RE: Young Folkies (Under 25) From: breezy Date: 22 Jan 05 - 01:26 PM from the age of 25 ish, one retreats gradually from folk based activities to re-emerge some 30 years later fully metamorphasised, the kids having gone and the wife has left and hair has thinned and greyed to rediscover you can play play 3 chords and go out on your own to clandestine gatherings in the company of other sad cases similar to yourself. The St Albans folk club meets every Friday and Sunday in the upstairs room of the Royal British Legion, Verulam Road, St Albans Herts, UEng U K Non-smoking, full guest list, lots of catters. We have an open-age policy. |

Subject: RE: Young Folkies (Under 25) From: Tutti Flutey Date: 22 Jan 05 - 03:05 PM I, at the tender age of, yes, 25, am just really finding my feet in folk music and have to agree that I feel slightly discriminated against as once the summer schools roll round I will have crossed that boundary to ye olde folk but, having attended folkworks last year, would really appreciate the opporunity to concentrate on the solely younger end of the age bracket for a while longer. Please note here that no discrimination is meant to anyone over 25 it is just my personal edge at the minute as I like to associate with people more my own age that the over 40s and struggle to find such people with an interest in folk music. I take refuge however, in knowing that the above mentioned (by Cod Fiddler) Sam Pirt will himself be 26 this year also. T-F |
