From: Mr Happy

I'm writing new song.

Up to now I can only think these don't make a noise.

worms
snails
moths

Giraffes & mute swans may utter a sound occasionaly.

Any other suggestions?

Basenji dogs are said to be barkless.

Basenji dogs from South Africa can't bark.

Some of the larger moths, particularly the Deaths Head ones, can squeal.... did you never read/see 'Silence of the Lambs'?

Basenjis don't bark - they scream. Well, it's more like a howl unless they're really upset.

Moths and butterflies probably make little flapping noises, Anything slimy will probably be silent when moving. I know I've never once heard a slug. I don't think most shellfish make very much noise.

Dead ones...

Nevermind...

How 'bout bugs? Like I ain't never heard heard a roach scream "genocide" when I give him the blast o' Raid, but maybe roaches ain't on a human fequency??? That is possible... Maybe they is smarter than humans and sit 'round, okay not sit, but ever roaches do that is like sittin', discussin' existentalism and theories of relativity...

Yeah, I'm sure worms don't have much to say...

But maybe they do???

Nevermind...

Define "noise."

Do they have a voice?

Do they make a sound when they move (walking, scrabbling across the rocky beach, climbing, etc.)?

FWIW: I haven't heard many noisy spiders. We have some geckos on the house every year I've never heard (except for their toenails on the window screens), neither have I heard a peep from the snakes in the yard. Ants are very quiet. I have, however, camped in Arkansas in the summer and had such a racket of insect joy around me in the night that I could hardly hear myself think and had to shout to be heard over it. So not all insects and bugs are quiet!

(And for the non-English majors on the list, I think that thread title should say *that don't make a noise, not *which don't make a noise. "Which hunting" is a favorite English major passtime. :)

Basenjis don't 'bark' per say but that don't mean they are mute. They howl, sign, yodel, whatever.

Slugs....slugs don't make a sound. Newts and salamanders are rather quiet too. You have to make "burummm...burrummm" noises for them yourself, when pretending they are toy cars and trucks. Turtles however can scream, especially when they hit the tarmack after falling from a three story bacony. Of course it could just be the sound of the wind being knocked out of 'em.

A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later, there's a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says "What the hell was that all about?"

I can attest that at least some turtles can make a rather loud "hiss" (like a snake?). I guess it's an "unvoiced" sound, so perhaps they don't have vocal chords or other "resonant" structures. Our local "snappers," especially the "leather back" kind, can get pretty agitated if you catch them where they can't get to the pond.

Cockroaches can make a number of "clicks" that are audible. In a seriously infested location I've heard them from as much as 30 yards away - from outside the house - obviously talking to each other. (Occupants had been away for a couple of weeks, and didn't clean up before leaving. Daughter was house-watching and called for help because the noise scared her and she was afraid to look inside.)

If rude urban legends are permitted, there's the old joke about the French lover with the punchline: "But I didn't know she was dead, I thought she was just American."

(sorry about that)

John

Just for the record, salamanders roar in their salamandery way (at least the one I recently picked up to move off the roadway did). So no joy there.

Ummm...fish?

Birds fly, aren't they pretty?
Sun, moon, all is beauty;
Fish swim-
They don't make a sound!

Chorus for a very old Mel Lyman song.

Try a pet rock. The best pet of all. No noise, no vet bills, no pet chow or kitty litter to buy, & you don't have to walk it.

Turtles aren't mute:

The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; (Song of Solomon 2:12 [King James version])

I also remember the last few lines of a poem about the giraffe,

"Its neck
   is found
   to check
    all sound
    which wanes
      e'er clear it
       gains the ear
       and so he's mute
         I'll follow suit"

I tried a quick Google, but couldn't find the whole poem. Laid out as above, with the appearance of a giraffe's neck

CHEERS

Nigel

Yeah, but that's a poetical reference to the turtledove, so that doesn't serve as evidence.

Snapping turtles communicate real well with hissing and snapping their sharp jaws.

And I ask again about "voice." Having a voice (making yourself understood) doesn't require making a sound. We can observe many "silent" creatures and make accurate deductions regarding what they want us to know ("don't step on me" "feed me" etc.)

I suppose if you get a sensitive enough mic even a protozoa is noisy.

I wonder what the sound signature of a sperm is?

Spiders, ants, earwigs.

Fish make lots of noise but it can only be heard by sonar as it is high frequency.

Shrimp make a frying sound when heard on sonar and a frying sound when dipped in hot oil.

No, you needn't walk a pet rock but if it's exercise that is desired, you can throw it...

I've never heard a lady koala vocalize. They huff like kangaroos sometimes but it's not really a voice. Male koalas grunt and roar like pigs. Kangaroos just huff and sort of click but don't really vocalize either. Our snakes are completely silent. Cheers, Joy

Interestingly, most rodents, even though mammals, seem to keep their lips buttoned.

Baby rats vocalize at 30-50 KHz, which is beyond the range of human hearing. They also "laugh" ultrasonicly when playing with each other or when they are being tickled.
