The last one of these I saw was the one Chris Smither was playing back in the late 60s. It had a great tone and very low action, a real pleasure to play. And in his hands of course, a true marvel -- Tom

What's the reason for the inquiry? It might help with the responses. I've played a few of them over the years.

...of course, after the J300 inquiry, folks may be a bit hesitant to put lotsa time in a resonse here.

i think it might be the frontier...with rope and cactus on the pick guard. http://www.mudcat.org/photos/photo_page.cfm?file_name_sent=open_mike
Bob's is an unusual one with a gibson head stock!
i can't find the thread where the Frontier was first discussed.

A friend of mine, Tony Virgo, had one back in the 60s. I played it a few times but had trouble with its rather narrow fingerboard.

Al Stewart used to play one back in the old Bunjies days, and might still.

I think Macca used to appear solo decades ago to sing Blackbird,Yesterday etc.with an upside-down Texan. The UK comic/singer Richard Digance also appeared with one,or something similar.
I noticed because I have the smaller version,The Cortez,purchased approx 1965-couldn't afford a Gibbo&thought I was getting second best.Quite wrong-although made by Gibson they sound different(all other things being equal)-twangier IMHO,lovely instrument.Cheers.

To burntstump;

I have a epiphone Texan, style FT79N, Serial #120357. Bought it around 1968 second hand for $50 or $75, while in Air Force. Played a few years then stopped. Always wondered if it was worth anything. I don't know shit about guitars or how these threads work.

Looks to be in great condition, been kept in ragged old case.

Any one out there who can educate me ????

To burntstump;

Thanks Much for your offer of assistance with finding info re; my 1963, Epi. TEXAN, but hooked up with a local place in Fredericksburg VA USA (Pickers Supply).

Good people, really know their stuff. I believe all are performers.

Don't think I'll sell yet, might just start playing again, now that I'm retired and got the time. Man hate the thought of breaking in the fingers again. Take Care Many Thanks

To open mike;

Considered your offer but not enough. If I do sell I will contact you first, but your going to have to sweeten the deal, like throwing in one of your cows or pigs.

Then again, never mind I have enough problems the the woman I have, I don't need one of yours.

Sorry !!!!But your not the only comedian out here.

Piece

The Virginia Wood butch-er.

Slightly off topic (sorry), but has anyone else noticed that the European Union currency unit, the euro, is represented by a symbol almost identical to the trademark on Epiphone guitars. Interesting to contemplate the outcome of a lawsuit by Epiphone, against the European Parliament, for using their registered mark.

They were not a common guitar even in the 60's. However, Epiphone is currently making 2 versions, a standard and an Elite (which is much better). Check the Epiphone site online.

I think my brother and his friends originally talked me into buying this guitar years ago, probably because it looked cool to them and they figured they could borrow it from me. As I mentioned on another thread, it was not the guitar for my personal musical intentions at the time, not only was the skinny neck a problem for me, it had such a large lower bout, I could barely get my arm over it. LOL

Good luck in your search.

Hi Iv'e got an Epiphone FT79N that I Bought in the 70's second hand
I recently had an appraisle By Elderly instruments and a dating from Gibson (the current owner of Epiphone guitars) and they told me according to their records my guitar was made in 1962. And if Elderly instruments were selling it today it would be about $2000 - $3000
Iv'e met and played along side Jack Hudson and to my knowledge he hasn't gigged with his since the 80's when he bought his Martin
Also Richard Digance has another Natural Texan and on one occasion We picked each others guitar up to pack up The biggest problem I'm finding is getting reasonably priced insurance to gig with mine and I have recently bought two other modern guitars to take its place on stage A Cort Parlour Guitar and a Crafter Auditorium Model

I have one. According to the serial number I believe made in 1970. Has a blue label inside the hole from kalamazoo Mich. I am the original owner. Is in Great condition. Very few marks on the body. I have seen others for sale in horrible condition asking around $3000. I'm not sure what color you would call the finish- I have never seen another in this finish but it is red- beautiful!

Yes, I have an Epiphone Texan, c. 1955, made by the original Epiphone factory. I checked with Gibson, it was made before Gibson bought the Epiphone company and has a very low serial number, so Gibson Co. thinks it is a 1955 -1956 at the latest. It is gorgeous, with a jumbo body, a speed neck, lots of mother of pearl and real ivory. It has beautiful action, and, as you know, the most wonderful sound in the world. I have owned it since I bought it 2nd hand in the early 60's.

I saw Tom Rush Saturday night performing with one a Texan. He says his first one burned up in a housefire and that two of his fans gave him theirs so that he would still have one. It had a great sound.

OH - and the airlines lost his two guitars - the Texan and a D sized made by some small luthier. They finally showed up just half an hour before the show.

I have a 65 Texan. My dad bought it new and then gave to me several yrs ago. Sunburst. I learned to play on it. Unfortunately he put a Dean Markley in it and drilled two holes for the tone and vol!! ##@@@%^!!! What was he thinking? lol

I was thinking about filling the holes and refinishing or not. Or just selling. Have too may as is. Craig snowyrvr@mtaonline.net

Pretty funny someone would offer $80 for a guitar if it is vintage could be worth around $3000. As a matter of fact , Epiphone has re issued the Texan and are asking $1949.00 and this is a Japanexe made re-issue. If that one sells for that much I would assume an original made in America by Gibson "Texan" would be worth a whole lot more than $2000.
By the way I have one. It has a crack on the back but otherwise is in pretty decent shape. If you want it, the price is $3000 flat. Write me at jfrings@sbcglobal.net

I have a 1955 FT 79 Texan made by Epiphone I just had it apraised and could not believe what they said, $4,000 to $4,500 not bad for a flea market buy of $50.

I have a 69 Texan. My daddy bought it for me as my high school graduation present. I didn't really appreciate what I had until my son (who also plays) told me the good news. My daddy had a D18 Martin he lost in a house fire. Now, I knew what that was, and I still yearn for it. He always mourned for it while he lived. He also had an upright Kay bass. I forget model/year, but I remembering him telling me it was the last American-made one...yearwise.

Question: Wasn't the 69 Texan the last American made...or am I dreaming?

Just curious.

Tecie. Gibson/Epiphone did a limited reissue in the mid '90s. The inside label on mine reads "#25 of 500 limited edition 1994, Handmade by Epiphone, Montana, made in USA". I bought it new in '95 and it has been my primary gig guitar ever since. Everyone who's every played it has said "Wow! this is an Epiphone?". I would gladly pay $2-3000 for another guitar of this quality, and believe I would have to.

I had one many years ago.....I still own a 1964 Epiphone Eldorado....it's the same guitar as the Gibson SJ-N.....back in '66 I went out looking for an SJ-N and couldn't find one.....with a couple hundred dollars burning a hole in my pocket, I stumbled into an Eldorado for (as I remember) $180.....an old high school friend of mine saw and loved my guitar and went out and bought a 1966 model a few months later.....we both still have our Eldorados.....

A friend of mine had one, but it was stolen in 1983. I played it next to my brother's 1958 Gibson J-50 and they were almost the same instrument.

I bought an epiphone about 7yrs ago at a garage sale. My dad and I obviously did not know what we were buying and the man whole sold it to us obviously didn't know what he had either....we got him to sell the guitar to us for $23, i think he was asking $30. I took the guitar to my teacher who was shocked that I was able to find such a buy and all he could tell me was that it was american made and worth more than i spent on it. Anyways I've been trying to do some research on it, it's in great condition, and I loved that it had a smaller body and fret board, made it easier for my fingers to move around. I just wanted to see if there was anyone who could possibly help me actually clarify model and possibly the year? It looks very similar to the 65? texan. Please email me cuauhtli56ga@yahoo.com

I bought an Epiphone Texan in a hock shop in Vallejo in about 1965. Great sound, probably from the 50's. Left it with my girl friend when I went into the service and when I got back there was a story about it just disappearing one day.
If you own a 50's Texan and notice that is sounds better tuned up a half step then contact me. I'd love to visit it and share a very interesting back story. No worries about how it changed hands, 40 years is a long time. finemc29 at aol.com

In Germany, of all places, a shop had a used one. This is 1965, and I was stupid enough NOT to buy it. I should have hocked whatever I owned and got it, dammit!

Ah, well, then I wouldn't have this story to tell, would I?

(Don't ask about the Framus Texan-style guitar I almost bought instead. Please don't ask. Mmm-kay?

I have a '65 natural finish Texan I'm selling. Strap button is a later Gibson part. The bridge is adjustable but as far as I know is not original. The pickgaurd is also probably not original but looks fine. Beautiful guitar with plenty of playing wear, nicks and weather checking. I recently played a half dozen j-50s and another 65 Texan, none sounded as good as my guitar. I'd prefer to find someone in the SF bay area who can come and play this. I know how to ship guitars, but I'd prefer not to. $2k.

Since 1963, I have been carrying my 1958-9, ft-79 Texan serial #230 614 built in Kalamazoo, Mi It's in remarkable condition, all original. Recently took it to a guitar shop in Ft lauderdale to get restrung. When I took it from the case and handed it to the tech he just looked at it and said "Wow!" He handled it like it was fine crystal. Five years ago I was going to trade it in on a Martin but the shop owner wouldn't let me. He said he didn't have a Martin that played and sounded as good. Said my Texan was worth $4,000, maybe more. I have no way of knowing if he was correct. Any one have any idea what it might be worth?

Regarding Jack Hudsons Texan,I have owned it for approx the last 6 years, its still well and the only changes made to it are the removal of the second scratchplate which Jack fitted and changing the adjustable bridge for a fixed one (the original can be refited if necessary).Although not my main guitar (which is a handbuilt Russell Wootton),the Texan can still be seen out and about now and then in the Worcestershire area. Its still very much loved.

Sir Paul still plays his restrung Texan with the Red Wings sticker on it for Yesterday. I noticed that he didn't get the saddle intonated for playing lefty.
I've played a couple of Texans, one belonging to Greg Keelor, and they reminded me very much of my brother's '58 J-50, both in appearance and sound/feel. Did Gibson have anything to do with making the bodies of the Texan? They are identical in size and shape. Is the bracing the same?

I have an older Texan too, mine is a 62. And in response to PHJim, all Texans made by Gibson from 58-69 are the same as the J-45/50, with the only difference being, that the Texan is a long-scale guitar.

Found out that my guitar 230614 was actually built in 1964. Age plays tricks with one's memory. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful instrument. I traded for it 2nd year of college. It's pick guard does not have the "E" on it.

Those pickguard "E"s had a habit of coming off, particularly the raised plastic ridged ones they used from 66 onwards.

To answer Albie, your Texan has a Solid Sitka spruce top (Some may be Adirondack), Honduran Mahogany back and sides, as well as neck. With a Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge.
