Subject: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Rasener Date: 17 Feb 05 - 02:00 AM It is unfortunate, but I have closed Market Rasen Folk Club. I will not go into the reasons publicly, but suffice to say that it is the normal types of wranglings that befall a lot of Folk Clubs. I have been negotiating with Committee over the last couple of weeks, but agreement could not be reached. I am very sorry about this and I will be making contact with all the artists over the coming week to explain the situation. Please don't make this thread a witchhunt thread as it is meant to inform everybody about the situation, not debate it. Many thanks to all artists who have supported me and all the audience who have come along week by week to listen to excellent music. Aren't Folkies the best in the world! I think so. Cheers Les Worrall |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 Feb 05 - 03:04 AM SO sorry Les! And such a lovely club too! It can't have been easy for you, and my sympathies are with you. Chin up, mate! I will keep fingers and toes crossed that your organisational skills and musical interests will find some other opportunity in the folk scene - soon. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: the fence Date: 17 Feb 05 - 03:32 AM Sorry to hear that Les, for all the hard work that you have put in over the last few months many thanks, and for all the super nights and entertainment, many thanks also. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Sooz Date: 17 Feb 05 - 04:34 AM Nothing ventured, nothing gained, Les. We'll remember the great times with you. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST,Zany Mouse Date: 17 Feb 05 - 05:32 AM Les, I'm sssoooo sorry to hear this. You've worked so very hard to make this club the success it was. Are you going to try and find another venue? Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST Date: 17 Feb 05 - 06:22 AM Sorry to see this confirmed, especially after the hard work of programming for the next season had been completed. Hope that you'll be able to resume operations at some time in the future Les. Best regards John Robinson http://www.JulieEllison.co.uk Described by Ralph McTell as "a terrific guitar player who also writes great songs" |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST Date: 17 Feb 05 - 06:28 AM Why close it though? There has been no rational explanation, who needs the kick up the arse? Les has done wonders at Market Rasen, who has caused this closure? |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST,MCP Date: 17 Feb 05 - 07:00 AM Les I'm sorry you couldn't keep the club open. It was so successful and a nice club. Hope you're OK. Mick |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST,JennyO Date: 17 Feb 05 - 08:01 AM So sorry to hear this Les - whatever the reasons are. As another folk club organiser, I know how tough it is to keep a folk club going in the face of all the obstacles. By all accounts it was a very successful going concern, too - a damn shame! Lets hope the folk scene does get another chance to use your talents. Best of luck for the future. Jenny |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST,Dáithí Ó Geanainn Date: 17 Feb 05 - 10:31 AM Really bad news Les - you've put such alot of energy into this, and had the support of so many folks. I'm sure another door will open. Obviously you don't want to go into details, but I'll bet it's not unadjacent to the usual greedy buggers syndrome where small-minded village fathers see somebody else do all the work and drum up business with bugger all input from them - and then decide to put the rent up. "My name's Bastard, but you can call me Robin..." I wonder if any of the acts booked would be interested in appearing at lincoln? i'll mention it to Gaucho when we meet up tonight if that's ok with you? all the best - you can count on support if you've not been totally p*ssed off by these clowns. Dáith |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 17 Feb 05 - 11:09 AM Bad news Les. "He who tries and does his best Is shat upon, just like the rest". RIP Market Rasen FC - may you rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of Walesby Village Hall. NOW THERE'S AN IDEA!!!!!! (LOL) S:0) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: breezy Date: 17 Feb 05 - 12:11 PM So, you've yet to play 10 venues , cant you do a bit of wandering? Well done, boy done good. Good luck in your future endeavours Les. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 17 Feb 05 - 01:38 PM I endorse all the above. The end of a (very successful) folk club hurts all of us who love traditional music. However, I've got a feeling someone like Les will be mustering his powers and may soon be offering us yellowbellies an alternative music venue. Love to see you up at Barrow, Les, to commiserate & buy you a pint. Kind regards Lawrie |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Rasener Date: 17 Feb 05 - 02:10 PM Thank you all so much for your lovely comments. I am not going to get drawn into arguments about it. However when chairmen change hands, questions are asked and more money is expected. I know what my limit is and if one and one don't make 2 then its time to stand up and be counted. Walesby Village Hall offerered the hand of friendship when I needed it and helped the club to move forward. I sincerely thank them for that. I have seen lots of excellent performers at Walesby and am proud of being part of it. The majority of the artists gave their time free to make the club what it was, and I am so grateful for that. I promise that if ever the right venue ever crops up, then I may well give it another go. I will still attend other folk clubs and enjoy relaxing and listening :-) I am fine for those who asked. When you make a decision, you move on. There is no point in looking back - got to look forward. I am really sorry for letting down the artists who have been sooooo supportive. Likewise I would like to thank all the artists that offered their songs for free, for the Yellowbellies CD, which by now must have accumulated near enough £1000 for the Radio Lincolnshire Charity. We can all be proud of that. I hope all of you will attend the Lincolnshire Folk event on Sunday March the 6th from 1pm to 5pm. It will be at Walesby Village Hall. It would be nice to see you all there. Cheers Les |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: treewind Date: 17 Feb 05 - 06:12 PM Sorry it didn't work out, and I know it wasn't your fault - you've done a great job starting it and keeping it going and I look forward to hearing you're going to do it again when the right opportunity comes up. And speaking as a guest cancelled as a result of the closure, yes of course we'd be interested in other local venues, whenever... Anahata |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Rasener Date: 20 Feb 05 - 01:09 PM Once again many thanks for all the very nice comments. I will be keeping my eye open for a new venue and if and when I find it, I will be looking for all the support that everybody has already given. So watch this space. I am missing it already. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Big Al Whittle Date: 21 Feb 05 - 11:47 AM Very sorry you've lost your club Les. Its very odd the way that people think that running a folk club is easy, and they cannot see that you were providing a major public facility for the local community to see live perfromers and even learn the basics of performing themselves. I think with folk clubs - in the first place you've got to have the kind of personality that makes it work - in which case it looks easy, and they think they will be able to do something superior the next week themselves. they delude themselves - but self delusion is the anaestheic that makes the world go wrong. there is actually a mountain of creativity involved in finding a room where the magic will work, finding a set of performers who will work within your budget, a set of residents who aren't on some bloody ego trip to show how they are more traditional or more groovy than everybody else in the world (far too groovy to tune their instruments and learn the words of the songs!) - its a wonder any folk clubs EVER get going. When one does - in any sensible and sane community - it would be hailed as a triumph. You have my permission Les to pass on to the gang of morons who have pissed on your chips, the fact that they are a veritable parliament of bumholes - they should be made to crawl a mile(or two) on broken glass to beg your forgiveness. Chin up! all the best al That you have been thwarted in your attempt to |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club is now closed From: Nick Date: 21 Feb 05 - 12:33 PM Hope you find somewhere else. If there is a positive it is that you might find somewhere even better. You definitely seem to have a lot of local support from artists etc Having been ejected from our pub by the anti-folk SS brewery police we have found somewhere that seems so far to be a better option. The same people come who came before plus we have gained some extra people we didn't have before. In the process of looking round we also have two 'reserve' places that we could go to in the future if we needed to. I hope that things work out well for you. |
