Subject: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 24 Jul 04 - 10:19 AM BRAND NEW VENUE Disregard all previous posts about Market Rasen Folk Club and a new venue. The next meeting is on Friday July 30th 2004. Doors open 7:45, music starts at 8:15 and finishes at 11:30 Guest Spotlight - John Blanks Special appearance - Roger Beard Young persons spotlight - Rosie & Lucy Coggle Support Artists - DACAPO, Jane Kitchen and Ernie Geddes, John Foreman £2 entrance Artists playing on night £1 No Smoking applies and the hall is disabilty and family friendly. I have worked so hard to find a suitable venue against all the odds, so please please support me and attend as often as you can. I will be updating my website over the weekend to reflect the new venue. I have problems trying to update the map on the website so please realise it shows where the old venue is. http://www.marketrasenfolkclub.co.uk You can e-mail from the website. Many thanks for all the support and encouragment to persevere and not let the club fold. Les Worrall |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Oaklet Date: 24 Jul 04 - 03:41 PM Is Walesby the place with the abandoned church on top of the hill? I slept there one moonlit night propped up in the porch whilst walking from Lincoln to me house. I don't think I have never been so bloody terrified. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 24 Jul 04 - 03:54 PM You bloody terrified nah. I am not sure actually. I am going up to the hall in a minute to meet the committee. I will ask them about that. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 24 Jul 04 - 04:24 PM Will the bar be open and will it have proper bear? |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Oaklet Date: 24 Jul 04 - 04:31 PM I took this photo whilst CAA type-testing my newly-restored R101. It is a lovely, lonely place. This hilltop is where the village of Walesby once crowded around the church. The vicar - I forget his name - no - it has come back - Thomas Biltcliffe - was recorded as saying "fuck this for a game of soldiers - I'm off" and established a new settlement in the valley below. The hilltop buildings were robbed of their stone, leaving nothing but the medieval street pattern that is still visible today. The church holds one service a year and its position on the Viking Way (Barton sans Hyphens to Oakham) has given credence to its previous reputation as the ramblers' church. There are naive stained glass depictions of healthy outdoor pursuits in the 1940s stained glass windows in the nave. The porch gained an "uncomfortable" rating in the July 1995 edition of Vagrancy Today magazine. http://www.harb85.freeserve.co.uk/gallery/ga12.jpg |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Travelling Audience Date: 24 Jul 04 - 06:24 PM That is great news Les, and what a lovely village Walesby is. When we visit rels. on the coast we pass through Walesby going "The pretty way". Hope to see you Friday then. Keep Music Live....TA. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 24 Jul 04 - 07:44 PM Great stuff TA hope you do manage to make it. Strollin' The bar will be open - I paid £1.60 for a bitter shandy - driving and all that. They have a real ale on and a lager and a reasonably good array of bottled drinks. Very friendly committee and people there. They are willing to provide their PA system when needed and get the lighting how we want it. Trust me folks, its gonna be good there. Oaklet Yes that is the church you are talking about, so no reason for saying you coudn't find it when your spot comes around :-) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 25 Jul 04 - 05:18 AM Got up this morning and thought i would put my thoughts into a sort of poem. Never done this before. The Market Rasen Folk Club Blues One day I had a dream To start a folk club I did beam I went along to the social club Who said luvely jubbly, just the job So we got started back in March With much hard work and the occasional fart The singers got quickly to their task Much more from them I couldn't ask It became apparent very soon These artists sang a lovely tune People came from near and far As the club pulled in the money over the bar Everybody seemed very happy Until this little chappy Who rose up from the committee And said hang on here we want a bigger fee Now the organiser said get stuffed The committee they were not chuffed They gave our Les a red card Which he thought was rather hard These little scheming money makers With brains no bigger than a shred of paper Would not back down on the price And thought our Les was in a vice But with sleeves rolled up and a big determination Our Les set about finding a new location This proved very difficult and hard to find It was becoming such a bind Then all of a sudden when out of the blue He found a village hall that would do The people there are very nice They have a bar with drinks at an affordable price This place is called Walesby Village Hall Where a big welcome will be there for all So come on down you have a choice To come and sing with good cheer and voice So here's a warning to all those money makers Who want to screw the folk club scene shakers If you can't see the business sense and get smart Stick your business up your arse Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 25 Jul 04 - 08:11 AM Poetic licence, there for the taking, Whether of ours or others making. Everyone is able to make a rhyme, If they would only take the time. This next work is dedicated to Les for his tireless devotion to duty:- I know an old git called Worral, Whose club closed so he was in sorrow. But he got off his bum, Cos he aint so dumb, And found a new club on the morrow. His friends said Oh Les Well done, We're going to have so much fun. It will all work out, There is never a doubt, If there was I'd buy you a gun. You don't have to throw a dice, To check if Walesby is nice. We know it will be, and will come and see, But please don't double the price! Historical refewrence in the last line. Please forgive me Les. Be Blessed. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 25 Jul 04 - 09:58 AM LOL You are forgiven, and price hikes are not in the offing, and Walesby is a lovely place |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: fat B****rd Date: 26 Jul 04 - 03:16 AM No, I moved to the North East in 1975 and would probably be lost there now. I have, however, recently re-established contact with Dick Appleton, a highly versatile guitar player (He once played with the Singing Postman and still lives in Grimsby). All the best from fB. PS John Connolly used to live near me in Cleethorpes. |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 28 Jul 04 - 04:12 PM Ok you yellow bellies. I hope you listened to John Blanks taking over at Radio Lincolnshire. He must have picked 3 of the longest songs he could sing. Having said that, I will let him off, because he was very interesting and sang so well. Not easy when you know you are live on radio. So a big well done John. What colour are your pants now LOL |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 28 Jul 04 - 04:32 PM Well done John. I enjoyed listening to your performance and hearing your explanations re choices...still would have liked to have heard "Lay down your weary tune" but you were brilliant anyway. Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 28 Jul 04 - 04:41 PM Sorry GS, wanted to do Stan Rogers because he's my favourite, Jack Hudson because he's too bloody good to be ignored the way he is, and a Trad song, so it had to be Annachie Gordon. Lay Down Your Weary Tune is on the set-list for Friday night, never fear! Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated. J :0) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 28 Jul 04 - 04:44 PM Please don't be sorry John...your choice was good and stood up well!!!!!!!! Best wishes. |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 30 Jul 04 - 07:27 PM What can I say. The whole evening was a great success. The room was full and a whole load of very talented artists sang and performed their socks off. Can't ask for more than that. :-) Special thanks to Strollin' Johnny for being such a good MC. Parking is a bit of a problem, but so long as people park sensibly along the lanes and don't block off peoples drives and don't park on the grass verges, then everything should be fine. I will leave the rest of the mudcatters who attended to reviewing the evening. So finally many thanks to everybody that attended both artists and listeners. It's team work. :-) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 30 Jul 04 - 07:28 PM Damn it TA, you just beat me to it. :-) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 30 Jul 04 - 07:43 PM Well done Les. An excellent evening of music, well attended and in a cosy, pleasant venue. Walesby village Hall is a great venue. Best wishes. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 31 Jul 04 - 03:57 AM And now...the next morning...more time to spend....so:- Strollin' Johnny...you did a great job with the introductions last night..that in itself would have been enough for some but....You really were the star of last nights show. The line up was quite impressive too. John Foreman(hope that's the right name) followed the intro and first few songs by John B with very much his own style of Folk performance. Ernie and Jane played and sung together which was certainly a new one on me...Ernies guitaring and Janes lovely silky voice made for excellent listening. Simon Johnson, who I personally have not had the pleasure of hearing before, gave a polished professional performance(and had one of the songs he wrote some time ago sung by John B). Da-Capo were excellent and execute those Steeleye Span songs so well. Nice too to hear a-capella. Rosie and Lucy Coggle, mesmerised us with their music..we will be seeing more of them no doubt. Don't know the name of the last man who played but he also was excellent. Hope I haven't missed anyone. Strollin Johnny was as usual impressive, carrying on his talent and professional approach from his Wednesday..Radio Lincolnshire appearance....John has a perfect face for Radio...sorry! only joking John. The night was such a success...organisation first class...music excellent...staff at the Hall excellent...beer good....what more can we ask for....Yes..you got it...Les the master organiser did not put the prices of admission up...What a man!!!! Well done Les. Best wishes. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 31 Jul 04 - 05:37 AM That was Roger Beard who was excellent and did justice to rounding an excellent evening off. Spot on review there GS. Many thanks for that. Now let me think. You would pay at least a tenner for such quality music. Calculator out 60 x £10 = £600. mmmm enough to go on holiday with. Na don't worry folks, I will still keep it at £2 entrance. All money made goes back in the pot for Main Guest artists appearing in the future at MRFC. Such as Bob Fox, John Breeze, CARA, George Papavgeris, John Conolly, Jack Hudson, Mary Humphries and Anahata, Vin Garbutt. Watch this space for more artists still to be booked :-) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Lizabeth Date: 31 Jul 04 - 06:14 AM Well, I've followed your "chat" for some time, but too shy too join in!! Jane K. making contact here, many thanks for the nice comments about Ernie and I- much appreciated! What a brilliant night all round, only sorry we had to leave before the end Les - apologies, not something we would normally do.Mal and I think the venue is great, don't drink so can't comment on the beer! So glad you didn't give up on organising the folk world in your part of Lincolnshire Les. John was brilliant, Simon Johnson - very impressive - book him Danno!!All in all a fantasic start. See you soon, must away to learn new material!!- the pressures on - the standards are set! Again thanks for the nice comment (on line!!! fame - ahhhh!) XX |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 31 Jul 04 - 06:31 AM Well Jane, now you have joined and please keep giving some input. Ernie and yourself have certainly got an act and are producing a great sound..Keep it up...but don't feel under pressure. Best wishes. Mike. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Lizabeth Date: 31 Jul 04 - 06:34 AM No pressure Mike, just simmering excitement!! |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 31 Jul 04 - 06:37 AM So when will be the release of the first CD? Start planning now I reckon. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 31 Jul 04 - 06:37 AM Ah the Lady with the lovely voice, Welcome on board Lizabeth. Have to watch me P & Q's now :-) Guitarzan (our Ernie) and Jane graced the stage under severe pressure to keep the quality going and they did. I reckon you have got the bug again well and truly :-) (the singing one). More new songs - is there no end to your wealth of songs. August the 13th will continue the high quality set last night, With a couple of blues singers Chris Wright and Steve Newton Plus a very talented lady called Lesley Curtis (not ot be missed) Plus the wonderful Lucy Wright (no relation to Chris Wright - blimey these Wrights breed like rabbits :-)) and Paul Young Plus the excellent Terry and Gwenda Cater who introduced Lucy and Paul to the folk world and last but not least Ian Enright who has taken control of the new Lincoln Folk Club and is also a very good singer. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Lizabeth Date: 31 Jul 04 - 06:41 AM Don't CDs follow as a consequence of people knowing who on earth you are!! No the pleasure is in the live delivery - no ideas above my station as yet!! XX |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 31 Jul 04 - 07:15 AM Well I know who you are Lizabeth, and your lovely voice is well worth recording for posterity. You can duet with me anytime! LOL! And don't doubt your own ability on the guitar - your solo work has impressed everyone who's heard you. Good to see and hear you again last night (and Ernie too). It was a real treat to have the double spot last night, in a fantastic (if slightly overheated - is their electricity connected to next-door's supply? LOL) venue, and to have the opportunity to MC such a talented line-up. Rosie and Lucie Coggle were a delight (loved the pink ties!), and Simon Johnson - well what can I say? Roger Beard was excellent finishing the evening off, apologies for the short set Roger, hope we'll have the full monty soon (no, no you daft buggers, not THAT full monty!). Thanks to everyone who came, and to Villan for taking the plunge with the new venue. Cheers, Johnny :0) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 31 Jul 04 - 07:23 AM Yes I thought the ties were very nice and such nice youngsters with a lot of talent. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Lizabeth Date: 31 Jul 04 - 07:28 AM Kind of hoped you would have asked before John ! Ah well life's strange meanderings!! You were of course the master of ballads last eve and no exageration - a really good format for the evening as well; I liked the way you split your performance between the two .. You didn't sing Dark Eyed Molly and I think I've drawn to your attention how greatly loved it is - next time please! XX must away the burgers are burning brightly o'er the lea! |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: treewind Date: 31 Jul 04 - 12:31 PM Lizabeth - CDs follow as a consequence of.... - having enough material to make one - wanting to make a demo to help get gigs - having people ask you if you've got a CD - playing almost any gigs at all. (because that's where you're going to sell them, realistically, and they make a big difference to your income from a gig) - finding an affordable way of recording one. It doesn't take long before you need to get into recording! Hope that helps! Anahata |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 31 Jul 04 - 03:51 PM Hey Lizbeth, sorry about not including 'Dark-Eyed Molly', I had ir on the set-list but Simon asked me to do one of his songs (he's only ever heard one of his done by someone else once before), so I dropped it for 'Who Will Be My Nightingale'. I promise to do it next time I see you - nudge me gently and I'll happily oblige, it's one of my favourite Archie Fisher songs. J :0) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: GUEST Date: 31 Jul 04 - 04:05 PM will look forward to it - just downloading stan rogers version + Eva Cassidy off winmx as we speak!! heh, this chating on line could change my life!! its quite addictive checking in on you all- am I right ?? or just a sad case!! Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 31 Jul 04 - 04:16 PM Lizabeth You are sad :-) I got photo's of last night from Simon. You all look half cut ho ho ho |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: GUEST,Lizabeth Date: 31 Jul 04 - 04:18 PM I was fishing for lies not the truth Les-but thanks anyway!! Half cut in my particular case would be somewhat irregular but highly amusing if it were the case!! |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 31 Jul 04 - 04:34 PM Lizbeth, Stan's version is a cracker. I could never hope to equal it! Hope it doesn't spoil you for my (somewhat weaker) version of it. :0) J :0) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 31 Jul 04 - 04:43 PM I reckon its time that a new duo was formed for MRFC. Strollin' Johnny and Lizabeth :-) As a duo you would be travelling the world making a fortune. Maybe we could call you Blank Kitchen. I know you wasn't half cut Lizabeth, but little ole redeye reared its ugly head when the photo was taken. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Lizabeth Date: 31 Jul 04 - 07:07 PM Final thought for today...hold that thought Les...time will tellXX Isn't this fun for sad people... well sad yet creative people let's say!! |

Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 01 Aug 04 - 04:27 PM What do you mean Lizabeth, we are not sad - we are happy, helpful, informative people who enjoy conversing with like same people :-) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 01 Aug 04 - 04:37 PM Jane, people who are into Folk music are rarely sad people. We are a world apart from those who stay at home every night wondering why there is never anything to do in their area....the truth is generally..they never look for things to do...or if it stares them in the face they don't see it. Folk music is on the up at the moment and from experience, the people who attend Folk Clubs are fairly well balanced people with a love of music. Your voice is worthy of attention and I feel that you should do whatever it takes to use it for the good of all of us and for your own good....CD's perhaps in the near future. Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Lizabeth Date: 02 Aug 04 - 06:11 AM I'll take greater care in the future with comments - noted!! |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Rasener Date: 02 Aug 04 - 06:26 AM I was only kidding Lizabeth :-) We are definately sad, when a folk evening finishes and we have to wait for the next dose. :-) |
Subject: RE: Market Rasen Folk Club Friday July 30th From: Georgiansilver Date: 02 Aug 04 - 09:41 AM Sorry Jane...Was not trying to scold you, just encourage. Best wishes , Mike. |
