Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: Teresa Date: 03 Mar 05 - 05:43 PM We need poetry, both good and bad, So the Vogons' existence would have had A place to fester and be counted, Or adams' plot would have ... dismounted ... Hmmm. Well, we do need poetry, just not that.. Or McGonnagal's. I mostly write non-rhyming type, as you can probably tell. :D Wondrous worlds of written word, Spilling and splashing in a feverish fervor Of literary lust! My humbel self, 1/1987 :) Teresa |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: Amos Date: 03 Mar 05 - 06:09 PM We need poetry because it is one of the few things in existence that produces a frequency capable of touching the soul through its defenses without harming it. These few things -- love, music and good laughter being three others -- are all that keep us from suffoicating into black, lost cinders of hopeless apathy at the hands of an indifferent entropic universe. But with them, anything is possible. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 Mar 05 - 09:29 PM We need poetry because words are the best thing the human race has ever come up with and poetry isn't just words. Poetry is words squared. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: John O'L Date: 03 Mar 05 - 10:03 PM Poetry is the music of words. We need it to give perspective to all the other rubbish we say and write. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: beardedbruce Date: 06 Mar 05 - 03:56 AM from Rilke... poetry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "For verses are not, as people imagine, simply feelings (those one has early enough), -they are experiences. For the sake of a single verse, one must see many cities, men and things, one must know the animals, one must feel how the birds fly and know the gesture with which the little flowers open in the morning." -Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Poetic power is great, strong as a primitive instinct; it has its own unyielding rhythms in itself and breaks out as out of mountains." -Letters to a Young Poet |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: GUEST,Guest Pip Date: 06 Mar 05 - 04:36 AM Poetry is something more philosophic and of graver import than history. Aristotle 389-322 BC Music dwells in the soul, but a poem lives in the heart. Anon. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Mar 05 - 05:06 AM why do dogs howl? Ezra Pound said that poetry is an equation for an emotion. Some peole (we call poets) have skill and inclination to find the words which summon up their emotions in others. The whole point is that our lives and our very existence is mysterious in its origin. Only people who will commit to religious and philosophical explanations of our existence find life a closed book with prosaic explanations for everything. I think it was Wallace Stevens who was asked what one of his poems was about was about, and he answered if I knew that I should not have needed to write it. there ia point at which mere prose and the procession of stated facts about our life doesn't tell our story and thats where the poetry comes in. In the poets words we find expression of the unique nature of being a human being, which is somehow recognisable. And we are not so lonely, not so much on our own. Less need to howl. Sometimes, like in Dylan Thomas, we just get swept waway by the exuberance and vitality of the minute he expresses. And its fun. all the best Big Al Whittle |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we need poetry? From: Amos Date: 06 Mar 05 - 03:53 PM Yes, yes....? And the Tao that can be described Is not the Tao. And why do poets howl, their ball Shaking in the cold wind of indifferent And entropic rivers in the time-fold? Why do they not learn They need to adjust? |
