Subject: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: GUEST,Barney Bonobo Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:25 PM There has been an alarming media campaign underway lately to discredit primates. The recent incident in California with the chimps is a case in point. Little has been said about the awful conditions those chimps were exposed to by the zoo in which they were incarcerated. Many primates in custody have been forced to watch reruns of embarrassing movies like "Bedtime for Bonzo". After awhile this results in a disastrous loss of self-esteem and deeply suppressed anger, and that can surface in sudden acts of violence. The real tragedy is that most of the violence is primate-on-primate, but you don't hear about that on the news, do you? No, unless a ruling class human being gets his lily-white skin bruised you won't hear "ook" about it. Primate-on-primate violence results in thousands of deaths and injuries yearly in the USA, but most of it goes unreported. Meanwhile, lurid stories are being spread about the sexual habits of Bonobos, implying that all Bonobos are sex maniacs in a constant state of seething lust. This is ludicrous, and it amounts to hate propaganda. Gorillas are traditionally cast in the role of the "heavy", and are seen as brutally vicious attackers and monsters who carry off blonde women, King-Kong style, to some hideous fate in their jungle lair. Monkeys are routinely portrayed as hysterical, witless, silly, screeching little creatures, and used for comic relief. This kind of gross stereotyping is Anti-Primatism of the most virulent sort, and should be named for what it is and ended once and for all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: GUEST,Lester Capuchin Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:30 PM You are so right!!! I get screeching mad about it all the time!!! Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:35 PM Not to worry. The Anti Primate Defense League (APDL) is forming even as we speak. It's always unfortunate when, due to the ignorance of the masses, the ill-advised actions of a few result in widespread and negative STEREOTYPES. I've been guilty of perpetuating those images myself, and I apologize. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: Wolfgang Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:42 PM What you criticise cannot be named anti-primatism, for human are primates as well, so by definition what they do or say cannot be anti-primatism. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: GUEST,Chongo Chimp Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:47 PM Man, that is one OFFENSIVE movie about the chimp with the guy's girlfriend. I am glad the APDL is formin' to deal with this kind of stuff. The thing about gorillas carryin' off only blondes is inaccurate, BTW. They ain't all that particular, when it comes right down to it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: GUEST,Anarchist Ape Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:48 PM What a bunch of ape-ologist twaddle! Forget about trying to convince humans what good guys we are! The time has come for us to claim our own! Don't let the deaths of the martyred California Chimps be in vain! Humans have had the upper hand for far too many years! Let's show them that "Planet of the Apes" is more than fiction! And let's make that Carlton Heston creep the next to pay! |
Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: GUEST,Beyonce Baboon Date: 22 Mar 05 - 12:50 PM Well, that sounds like a familiar refrain, Wolfgang. It may be that humans are primates, technically speaking, but in the common vernacular "primate" is not usually used to denote humans, is it? I think the meaning of the term Anti-Primatism is therefore quite clear to most people. |

It's a misnomer anyway one of them wrote sounding serious. That's an interesting thread, BTW, I even pondered posting the following sentence in the thread about gypsies without indicating I was quoting and waiting for the interesting reactions: I do not regard their actions as being above criticism because of something the Nazis did to their parents or grandparents over 55 years ago in response to McGrath reminding us of what has happened to the Roma in the holocaust. But then I thought I should be nicer than that. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Anti-Primatism on the rise From: Layah Date: 22 Mar 05 - 07:44 PM In a vaguely more serious vein, I think people actually do have some sort of negative reaction to non-human primates. Or at least are scared of admitting they might be intelligent. In doing some research for an essay about ape language experiments, I have run time and again into people who irregardless of evidence uniformly dimiss any possibility that apes could learn anything approximating language. I think they decide humans are special because they have language, and so they are worried they won't be special anymore if apes can learn language. Just like when they used to say only humans made tools, or only humans had opposable thumbs, both of which are incorrect. Unfortunately, the evidence that apes can learn language from what I've read is more anecdotal than scientificly proven. Depending greatly on how you define language as well. |

Aren't a lot of the people whining about "anti-semitism" complaining about among others, Arabs? Would those same primates, particularly a very Marginal Gibbon, far removed from the cradle of the semitics, who shall not be named, call their own condemnation of Palestinians what it is, antisemitism? When the two get caught outside the zoo by the NYPD the lead turns to the second chimp and says "If you have any poo, fling it now!" As if humans aren't the masters of that type of activity! Just look at how deep it is in Washington D.C. They act more like the place is an outhouse than a capitol of the country! |

Scumbags, that's what! I can understand the rage that drove Kong to smash up that train and stomp on those people in New York. The Republican Party has a long tradition of working with and befriending simians which he should be forced to acknowledge, which goes back to before Reagan was President.
