Subject: BS: Papal Bull From: Mr Red Date: 05 Apr 05 - 01:29 PM I don't think this should really be in the BS section out of respect but it won't be long so I thought I would get the whole subject started. SO --- is it white or black smoke you see? |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Rapparee Date: 05 Apr 05 - 01:42 PM At the moment, blue. A nice, deep, sky blue. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 01:43 PM I want to know why the official US delegation doesn't include former President Carter, when it includes former Presidents Bush and Clinton? Do you suppose Carter is being dissed by Bush for speaking out against his war policies? And why isn't the Dalai Lama attending the funeral? Do you suppose he wasn't invited? |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 05 Apr 05 - 02:08 PM Heck, if Dubya had his way Clinton probably wouldn't be going either. But since Clinton and George the First have become such grand friends, Dubya probably figured it'd piss Dad off if his buddy Bill didn't get a seat on the plane. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 02:16 PM Naw, that ain't it. It has to do with who is officially invited by the Vatican. Since I can't imagine any possible reason for the Vatican to snub Carter, there must be some other explanation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: gnu Date: 05 Apr 05 - 03:56 PM Surely the Dalai Lama was invited, no? and Carter? |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 04:13 PM The wire reports are quoting Scott McClellan as saying the White House "reached out" to Carter. Period. Dunno about the Dalai Lama though. Seems odd he wouldn't go, but there are ALWAYS politics being played. The patriarch of the Russian Orthodox church refused to go, just as he had steadfastly refused to meet JP. And JP never did go to Russia, despite the Vatican's repeated overtures to the Russians, the Soviets, etc. And the reasons weren't just cuz he backed Solidarity and was vehemently anti-Soviet, anti-Russian (as many Poles are), and anti-communist. It is also because there are certain Orthodox churches that aren't exactly mourning the death of "the Peoples' Pope", if you catch my drift. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Apr 05 - 04:36 PM Why should a church specifically mourn the leader of another? Sure, they can offer respectful wishes and so on, if they feel moved to, but there is no hard and fast rule that says they have to. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 04:37 PM That's correct. But most the other patriachs of the Orthodox churches will be in attendance. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Rapparee Date: 05 Apr 05 - 05:32 PM Remember, GUEST, that there are Eastern branches of the Catholic Church which are not at all affiliated with the Eastern Orthodox churches. Goes back to the Great Schism of about 1000, if I remember aright. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 05:33 PM I'll try very hard not to forget that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: John O'L Date: 05 Apr 05 - 06:41 PM Earlier than that wasn't it? 4th or 5th century? Council of Chalcedon? I may be wrong. Usually am |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Rapparee Date: 05 Apr 05 - 06:43 PM I could be too. It was so long ago, and my memory for dates isn't what it was back then. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 06:44 PM East West Schism - 1054 Western Schism - 1378 If you have to ask, why bother? |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: John O'L Date: 05 Apr 05 - 07:20 PM If you don't ask you don't find out. This for example: The Council of Chalcedon in 451 discussed the nature of Christ, disagreement thereon causing seperation of the Eastern Othodox mob from the Roman mob. See? You lean something new every day |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Folkiedave Date: 05 Apr 05 - 07:26 PM A former member of Sheffield City Morris (Tony Rattigan) is now an ordained priest. Since according to my understanding anyone can become Pope once they are ordained - we are working up the slogan: Rattigan for Vatigan. Best regards, Dave Eyre |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: John O'L Date: 05 Apr 05 - 07:38 PM Good luck. As of nine hours ago the cardinals hadn't yet decided when to go into conclave. You might just squeak it in. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: John O'L Date: 05 Apr 05 - 07:59 PM With a couple of days intensive lobbying, I don't see why Pope Tony shouldn't be next. It would be a miracle, and that would certainly make his intentions clear. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: paddymac Date: 05 Apr 05 - 08:54 PM Gee. I saw the thread title and immediately thought "Yep, there sure is a lot of it," then thought, Nah, it's too soon for many people for such irreverance. Delighted to see the thread take on a historical bent. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 05 - 09:00 PM We're irreverently slammin' it over here. I use the Groucho Marx standard for sacredness. |
Subject: RE: BS: Papal Bull From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Apr 05 - 11:59 PM Groucho said many profound things. Are you referencing his "I sent the club a wire stating, PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT ME AS A MEMBER" line? How about "Military justice is to justice what military music is to music." Or "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others." link SRS |
