Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Jun 05 - 02:51 PM He wound up with Raven.... we resisted the temptation to call him 'Sabbath' or Ozzie, or Edie... (he's black and we got him on a Sunday).... although at the moment he's being called 'the tiddler' for obvious reasons... rapidly diminishing to 'Tiddles'.... I can't believe I have a cat called Tiddles! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Dave'sWife Date: 03 Jun 05 - 01:05 PM That's not a Cat, Pixie.. it's ... a gremlin? A Bat? Oh.. I forgot.. they grow into the ears, don't they? It's been a few years since I had a baby cat in the house. My last kitten now weighs about 20 pounds. Her name is Nuala but everyone here calls her 'La Gorda' for obvious reasons. She is the Daughter AND Grandaughter of a Marmalade Tom who ruled this neighborhood for 15 years. (Kitty cat Incest don't ya know) We all called him GingerCat. His various offspring are still running around all over the place but most have been adopted and neutered/spayed so their numbers are dwindling. La Gorda's Mom Was called Spawn of GingerCat until she had kittens and we realized she was a girl. She met a nice neutured male, got a collar, spayed and moved away to live happily ever after, we assume. La Gorda's two brothers from the same litter are both on the street still. Their names are Hitler and Lucifer! The two boys and La Gorda form a little gang whose main mission in life appears to be regularly beating crap out of cat we call LURK.. a Black Fluffy cat who lurks about at night. As a whole, we call the collective spawn of GingerCat - the Wild Tribe of Ginger cats and the babies are referred to as Gingersnaps. I kinda miss that old Tom. My fat cat, his daughter/grandaughter looks and acts just like him. No wonder - she has an extra helping of his DNA! She sweet at times but awfully ornery and has the loudest purr I've ever heard. Only thing is - she purrs mostly out of self-satisfaction and not in response to anything you might to such as pet her! We love her. She is best buddies with the Epileptic Alsatian. Frick and Frack they are. Enough of my cat issues.... Pixel is pretty cute! I will tell the parents of dear-departed Pixel that a new cat is carrying on the tradition. Their cat was also named affter the Heinleinian cat. best wishes to you and Pixel and to LTS and her new squeaker. What did he wind up with for a name? I missed that somehow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 03 Jun 05 - 10:35 AM She is a little like Morgana although her eyes are actually brown (think Morgana's were yellow). We're not sure whether she'll be long or short haired yet, she can't seem to make her mind up! Just booked her in to have her booster shots so that could cause ructions. Her and Loki seem to be getting on now, usually Pixel chases Loki out of the room and up the stairs then Loki chases Pixel down the stairs and back into the room. This is a particular favourite around 4am when they mange to sound like an entire herd of wildebeest |

Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,celtaddict at work Date: 30 May 05 - 12:08 AM Pixel is apt indeed. I think if I ever have another cat I will have to call it Schrodinger. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Phot Date: 29 May 05 - 03:42 PM Well after an afternoon of much searching, coz Pixel managed to vanish. Just where, and to which trouser leg of time! She went, we don't know, but she's home now, and thats all that matters. Just four days in the house, and we are her servents! Must go more playing to do! Wasail!! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: gnu Date: 29 May 05 - 01:13 PM Ah then. Pixel is apt. Well done. Liz... I like Limpit's choice. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 May 05 - 12:42 PM Well, here's another kitty to name..... we acquired a little black tom cat this morning. I think Limpit has picked a name but any suggestions are always welcomed! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,celtaddict at work Date: 29 May 05 - 09:41 AM Always good to find another Heinlein fan! I want to live in his future. The online dictionary lists three definitions for "pixilated" 1. Behaving as if mentally unbalanced; very eccentric. 2. Whimsical; prankish. 3. Slang. Intoxicated; drunk. Adobe Photoshop uses "pixilate" for a process that breaks photos up as if they are a fine, bright mosaic. And I am not sure if it is an etymology or serendipitous, but the name certainly suggests that one who is "pixilated" is what we also refer to as "gang awa' wi' the fairies." |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 29 May 05 - 05:46 AM Celtaddict, that was some of the thinking behind the name.....she has the ability to vanish so thoroughly it's as if she's walked through the walls. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: freda underhill Date: 29 May 05 - 01:41 AM fantastic - a wonderful name for a pixie's cat! best wishes, freda |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,celtaddict Date: 28 May 05 - 11:43 PM "Pixel" was also the name of an esteemed literary cat, the character for whom Robert A. Heinlein's book "The Cat Who Walked Through Walls" was titled; Pixel managed to time travel and eventually may well have wandered into everlasting life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 07:06 PM All for nought. I still say 'cat'. Or Kittykittykittykitty. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Phot Date: 28 May 05 - 06:49 PM Thank you all for all your suggestions, but we seem to stuck with our first thoughts. So please welcome Pixel. Images will be posted, if we can get her to stay still for more than 0.25 of a second! Wassail! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Lin in Kansas Date: 28 May 05 - 06:44 PM My three are Boris Bat Karloff (black with yellow eyes), Bela Bruce Lugosi (gray with orange eyes), and Lonnie Sue Chaney (gray/brown with green eyes). They all uphold their namesakes' reputations. Lin |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,Rachel Date: 28 May 05 - 04:40 PM We have a cat called Loki too, we also got a kitten and called him Odin, who was a friend of Loki in Norse Mythology. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: LadyJean Date: 26 May 05 - 11:40 PM The bio teacher at my old prep school (an English lady by the way) bred Siamese, and claimed that cats should always have an S or Z in thier name, because they can hear the ssszzzz sound. She gave us Solomon, the scion of her siamese and a gray and white tom about town. I presently belong to Mr. Fitzsherbert(Fitz to his intimates.) Musetta, and Grace O'Malley, the new kitty. Fitz was named Fitzsherbert because he's orange. Musetta was named from "La Boheme", because she has an attitude. And Gracie is an attack kitty, so I named her for a pirate. Hollowfox's offspring nicknamed Musetta "The Hiss Machine" and Gracie "Violence". |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Phot Date: 26 May 05 - 07:22 PM Well she's finally asleep, curled up on a blanket in the front room, and purring like a well tuned Jag V12. Name tommrow, and if I can get a camara home, pics will be posted as soon as possible. Wassail! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: SharonA Date: 26 May 05 - 06:51 PM Bunnahabhain, please pardon my ignorance on the subject of the torte. In the US, I've only ever seen it spelled "Dobosh", which I'm sure is an Anglicization of the original. I don't even know the proper character to use to type a Germanic Z. How is it pronounced: "zh" as in Brezhnev? |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,Harmoni Date: 26 May 05 - 04:47 PM Cat number one is named Sandra. Cat number two is named Darrin (but we changed the pronounciation so the first syllable rhymes with "car") I went onto a baby-names website and if you ignore all the popular kids names, there are names from different languages that also translate what the names actually mean. |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: pixieofdoom Date: 26 May 05 - 02:22 PM We've just got her home this afternoon. She's still a little shy and has been hiding under the furniture a lot but is very playful. She's had a bit of a growl and hiss at my other cat so I suspect the shyness won't last! If she can take Loki on (and have her hiding under furniture) she's probably going to be quite the handful! |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: JudyB Date: 26 May 05 - 10:18 AM I think Pixel is an interesting choice, if it seems to fit the kitten when you get to know her. And using that name could honor the cat mentioned above that has passed over. Our two are Tilahun - "my shadow" - who is mostly black and very attached to us and disappears when strangers are around, and Tejitu - "full of spirit" or more literally "full of honey mead" - who is a friendly and rambunctuous calico. Good luck with the new addition! JudyB |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 26 May 05 - 09:45 AM Save time. Call it "Roadkill". RtS (NOT a cat person) |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Crystal Date: 26 May 05 - 04:57 AM The cat which adopted my father is called Puss. I usually name pets after favourite tv or book characters, so far we have had Tullulah (after The character in Bugsy Malone), Patrick (after the character in the Sharpe books), and Spike (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Jan (from Lorna Doon). Oh yes and a stick insect called Tin-Tin! |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 25 May 05 - 10:25 PM Cats are supposed to respond to "s" sounds. So, if you want increase your chances that the cat will come to you when called, give it a name with lots of "s" sounds in it. Like "Stupid-Sorry-Assed-Sack-of-Shit." |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Bunnahabhain Date: 25 May 05 - 07:09 PM It's Doboz torte. It's an Austrian creation so the Germanic Z is correct. I always like 'daft animal' as a cats name. It fits far too often. Daemonic evil kitten of satan, is Crystals suggestion, not mine. She forgot to change cookies.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: SharonA Date: 25 May 05 - 07:01 PM I have a book of cat-themed cross-stitch patterns; one is of a cat playing with an unwound roll of toilet paper, with the motto "My name is 'Stop That!' What's yours?" Pixie, you mention that your new kitty is a tortoiseshell (for the uninitiated, that's a cat of 2 colors: a base coat, such as black or gray, with orange- or cream-colored patches and streaks) -- also called a Tortie for short. So for her name, I suggest Dobosh, as in Dobosh Torte (Dobosh Tortie?). And what is a Dobosh Tortie, you may well ask? It's a cake with 7 or 8 thin layers separated by thick layers of cream filling, usually of a contrasting color so it's a 2-color cake! Here is a picture showing the inside of the cake: Three varieties of the Dobosh Torte (FYI, there are any number of recipes on the internet, for those adventurous enough to want to make one.) But whatever you name her, congratulations on your new kitten! Sharon |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,Peter Woodruff Date: 25 May 05 - 05:01 PM Dear pixieofdoom, My wife and I rescued two cats from a local shelter a year ago. We went through this same process...and it is a process to name your cats. We took home a female black cat and a Male miore tiger cat. My first suggestion was to name them Opra and Dr. Phill...shows you where I'm coming from. However, They were named by the passing of time! Dr. Phill from the moment I witnessed his masterbation techniques...I had to give this cat a home. Teddy Tummysucker...now Teddy became his name. As for Opra, she became Lillybelle from the Neil Young song "Southern Man." Peter |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 May 05 - 04:02 PM We had a cat with a diamond shape on her chest, we called her Koh-i-Noor after the diamond in the Crown jewels. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: GUEST,Seaking Date: 25 May 05 - 03:33 PM We've got a one eyed (after a fight) Ginger Tom imaginatively named 'Ginger' Our tail-less (hit by a car) white female has a diamond shaped black patch on her chest. 'Diamond' didn't work so she got called 'Ruby' instead. Any new pet in our house I always suggest 'Nosmo' but get outvoted every time. I should let the vet choose, they all seem to spend more time there than at at home ! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 May 05 - 04:36 PM YES PLEASE PIXIE!!! Thanks. LTS I always wanted a cat called Edie... EdiePus.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: Dave'sWife Date: 24 May 05 - 03:31 AM I have a friend who had a kitten named Pixel and sadly, Pixel died right after they got him. Some horrible disease. Why not call her FANG? That would certainly earn her some respect on the block. You also have to consider what you will sound like as you stand at you gate hollering for her to come home. My neighbor has a Bloodhound named Stella and he especially enjoys calling her to come in at night .. 'STELLA! Steeeeeeeeellaaaaaaaah!" in his best Marlon Brando impression. Then there's Ayeshah the main character from the african adventure novel SHE. Ayeshah is 'She Who Must be Obeyed." Or... Carmilla, Mircalla or other vampiric arrangements of those letters. My personal recommendation: Little Rabbit Foo Foo |
Subject: RE: BS: Naming a kitten From: PoohBear Date: 23 May 05 - 05:58 PM 1st cat - Puggy, because of her pug nose 2nd cat - Beastie, because . . . well, it just fit Current cat - Mei Lei, courtesy of my other half, she's named after the character in M*A*S*H, Mei Lei Marston. I think it's best to get a feel for the fur balls personality before bestowing a name upon it. And, if your household is like mine, the cat will have a least a dozen names, only 3 of which will be repeatable in polite company. . . Cheers PB |
